Do you ever take random drives just to get out?

There’s something so soul rewarding with random drives in the countryside.

by Anonymousreply 30August 9, 2025 5:39 AM

Yes, actually - mostly when I go see my mom in Connecticut.

by Anonymousreply 1August 8, 2025 1:55 AM

Amen!

I’m thinking about going for a drive tonight in the mountains just to disassociate in cooler weather but I’m afraid of running over an animal.

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2025 2:07 AM

Sometimes I hop a water buffalo and get halfway to Eritrea.

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2025 2:13 AM

No, I escaped the American gene for road trips and drives to collect myself.

by Anonymousreply 5August 8, 2025 2:29 AM

Not anymore if I can help it, since every other driver on the road is not only bad, distracted or angry, but now they wanna actually kill you too.

by Anonymousreply 6August 8, 2025 2:37 AM

I really don't care for random drives in the country, but I do love a good traffic jam. I put my top down and crank up some tunes.

by Anonymousreply 7August 8, 2025 2:51 AM

No. Gas is too expensive to waste pointlessly driving around. Not to mention I don’t really enjoy driving.

I go to my hometown every summer for a few days, and my brother and I take off into the Ohio countryside. He loves to drive, knows all the back roads, and we usually pick a restaurant in some small town to punctuate the trip. We only do this once a year, so I don't feel guilty about the gas.

And the key thing: quality time with my brother.

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2025 3:06 AM

Jesus Christ R9 that sounds like my idea of a good time. It reminds me so much of my childhood with my parents and other relatives.

Perhaps I’m chasing nostalgic memories.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2025 3:07 AM

Not since high school, when driving was new to me. Now I get filled with road rage, no matter whether the setting is rural or scenic.i have contemplated a cross-country drive to California, but that would be more an adventure than a "random drive."

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2025 3:15 AM

No. Everything is so built up that the countryside is much further away than it used to be with way too much traffic to get through.

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2025 3:19 AM

One good thing about living in flyover country in a city less than 1 million.

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2025 3:31 AM

At least a couple times a week, usually just for 30 or 60 minutes after work. Ever since I started working from home in 2020 I’ve found it hard to keep my workday separate from my real day. Getting out of the house and just driving to nowhere in particular helps me distance myself from my work. After a few months of Covid WFH, I found that an aimless drive every couple days is cheaper than an every evening bottle of wine.

Just got an electric car I go on drives again because it's so fun to drive. It is very silent smooth and inexpensive to drive.

Only to explore areas around my new hometown that are new to me. A handful of 20 minute drives remain, then I'm done.

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2025 6:18 AM

I did that when I lived in my tiny Eastern Washington college town over the summer. There was fuck all to do at night and I was climbing the walls from boredom. I'd drive ten miles to the next town just to go to Taco Bell.

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2025 6:31 AM

I have friends that live in a pretty rural area and it's really pretty, When I go to visit them, I take the long way through country roads instead of the freeway and that seems to do it for me.

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2025 11:53 AM

I prefer taking walks.

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2025 12:04 PM

I used to, but now I try to keep my mileage as low possible as I hope to hold on to my 12 year-old car for a lot longer.

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2025 1:23 PM

r19, did you drive a white Elantra? Did you major in Criminology?

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2025 2:14 PM

Growing up, “Sunday drives” were a thing. After church my dad would take us on a meandering drive (we lived in a semi-rural area) to another town and we’d have Sunday dinner at a restaurant. So I’ve had that gene all my life. I call it exploring. When visiting family, I’ll be like where does this road go, it looks pretty? (This in gorgeous Bucks Co.) When vacationing, I constantly drive the small roads and now I know them so well I don’t need a map. It’s very calming. Also I’m talking about places with NO traffic.

by Anonymousreply 24August 8, 2025 2:48 PM

I took the most epic one of all time.

by Anonymousreply 25August 8, 2025 2:51 PM

I used to when I was younger. Now I'm too much of a screen zombie for it.

by Anonymousreply 26August 8, 2025 4:12 PM

Growing up in Fort Worth, TX, we used to get in the car on boring weekends and drive, mostly to the mall, just to get out of the house for a while. Feels like a million years ago now.

Now I live in Manhattan and take random walks just to get out of my apartment.

by Anonymousreply 27August 8, 2025 4:30 PM

Very funny, r23! I attended WSU more than a decade before the murders. I switched to the Vancouver campus because Pullman was such a mind-numbing place to live. I think there's a chance the murderer would have found something else to do with his time if he switched campuses like I did. Or he would have killed a bunch of people in Portland.

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2025 5:27 AM

In Switzerland we can take the train for this. All kinds of little trains for example. Or the boats. But this is only feasible when one has the AG - annual pass for unlimited public transport. Otherwise.... $$$$ (CHF)

by Anonymousreply 29August 9, 2025 5:36 AM

Yes. My flyoverstan town is just large enough to drive for an hour and there are different ways to attempt a route. Not too many pedestrians and even the worst areas are child’s play.
