WHET the #metoo movement?
Hearing of Leonard Lopate's passing today at age 84, announced on NPR where he was an enormously popular radio talk show host for decades until he was abruptly #metooed and fired in 2017, I was reminded of how instantaneously celebrated men like him, and the even more popular Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose were dismissed without a moment's hesitation. No trial, no jail time, no official explanation, just gone. And they all seemed to disappear, never to be heard from again.
I'm not defending any of them. But I'm wondering if this atrocious era of tRump has changed all that. Is it harder to destroy celebrated sexual harassers now? Will the revelations of the Epstein files change all that?

I can only imagine that these guys were offered a deal to go away, knowing they're guilty and not having to go to trial? If I was innocent I'd be shouting from everywhere rooftop. I'm not saying it's right to be accused and ur name dragged tru the mud before a trial and verdict but a lot of these guys sure do go quietly.

"Spillover" from the movement, which had the effect of branding all men as rape-y and hands-y, is the reason Trump won a second term in 2024.
It was the backlash to the backlash. And it was swift and hard.

Have any photos of Matt Lauer surfaced in the intervening years? I'd think the papas would be all over him. Amazing that he could completely disappear like that.

metoo is selective. orange is convicted and liable, on the epstein list and yet it is squatting in the white house.

In a world where American democracy is being dismantled before our very eyes, and where there are multiple bloody wars happening across the globe -- putting us on the verge of WWIII-- somehow, some way, somebody grabbing your ass 20 years ago isn't as high of a priority.

metoo was the response a trusted educator gave her under-aged student who confided about being abused.
metoo was co-opted by aging hollywood courtesans who reformatted their whoring as abuse.

OP, have you noticed that we are in the midst of probably the greatest right-wing backlash in history, or at least in anyone's lifetime? Only the period following Reconstruction comes close. We're also living under a fascist oligarchy now so you might want to pay closer attention. Nothing is normal and everything is moving very quickly.

R1, why would they need a trial? They just lost their jobs no one put them in jail. People lose their jobs all the time. Big whoop. And Matt Lauer was subject to a big investigation at the network, it's not like they didn't have a reason to fire him

OP, wasn't someone else at WNYC sacked for sexual accusations. Leonard was always so pompous. Loved it when a guest proved him wrong.

Yes, r13, it was Jonathan Schwartz, who had a weekend show playing classic oldie hits for Baby Boomers. Mostly sad for me because he's the husband of actress Zohra Lampert.

The problem with #metoo is that it only applies to Democrats. Al Franken had to resign as Senator for pretend touching a woman’s breasts for a gag. Nothing near as bad has happened to any Repub for actions 10x worse. Also it solidified the Repubs as the pro male Party. This is still a huge problem for the Dems.
