She-Devil (1989)
I'm watching She-Devil for the first time. This looks like DL cat-nip.
An overweight and frumpy middle class wife enacts devilish revenge on her cheating husband and his glamourous romance novelist mistress.
Meryl Streep, Roseanne Barr, Ed Begley Jr., Sylvia Miles, A Martinez, and Linda Hunt.

That greenscreen of the house blowing up with Roseanne in the foreground is comically bad! Even for 1990.

I’d be curious to know Meryl Streep’s dish on Roseanne from this movie. I bet she hated her and her frumpy wardrobe and facial wart.

I thought it was funny as hell. Meryl's character was a hoot.

My favorite part is that they were fighting over Ed Begley Jr.

Linda Hunt is one of my favorite character actresses. She can do anything:
Popeye;
The Year of Living Dangerously;
The Bostonians;
Dune;
Silverado;
She-Devil;
Kindergarten Cop;
Pocahontas;
Auschwitz: The Nazis and 'The Final Solution'

It is funny because Ed Begley Jr. is the philandering husband.

The book - by Fay Weldon - was great. The best adaption was a British mini-series The Life and Loves of a She-Devil.

I'll take Patricia Hodge over Meryl Streep any day. And Roseanne can jump in the lake.

Love in the rinse cycle! The houseboy and the 'stepdaughter'. The evil mother and her trampy daughter, it almost felt like a Mommy Dearest spoof at points.

It’s not a good movie but it’s watchable. I thought Roseanne got better as the movie went on. It’s a fun revenge movie. It did have a terrific cast thought with Streep, Ed Begley Jr., Linda Hunt, Sylvia Miles and Mary Louise Wilson, Deborah Rush, Doris Belack and Jack Gilpin in small but memorable parts.

The movie that confirmed what I always suspected...Susan Seidelman was not a very good director. (DSS was a one-off).

I always mix up parts of this with Death Becomes Her. Meryl's characters and some of the story beats are similar in both

I loved the scene with Sylvia Miles, "she was a teenage tramp! She couldn't get enough!"

Parts of this are enjoyable. But compared to the British miniseries the wickedness is watered down. Meryl can be quite good at comedy, here and Death Becomes Her. Linda Hunt and Conchata Ferell were the best character actors since Thelma Ritter.

I just watched it again thanks to this thread. Like r36 says, parts are enjoyable but overall it's just average. Roseanne almost feels like a supporting character in her own movie. Linda Hunt was great but her character just disappears midway through.
On the other hand A Martinez floating in the pool in nothing but a banana hammock is one of the hottest images ever committed to celluloid

Average? AVERAGE!? How fucking dare you. I grew up on this movie as a baby gay and it taught me everything I know about getting revenge.
Mainly: Always make a list so that you can have the satisfaction and drama of crossing people and things off said list as you systematically destroy them, and always do this with a straight, menacing face! Once the enemy's collapse is complete, wear all white and give yourself a glow-up to avert suspicion and to cleanse the mind of all you've just been through. You deserve it! Finally, let out all those devilish smiles you've been holding in this entire time! Now walk like an angel 😈

Campy, female-based comedies always get negative reviews - particularly from straight, white male film critics.
These films are what they are - nobody is pretending they are genius or masterpieces. They're fun, light and funny.
Meanwhile Happy Gilmore and Jim Carrey movies are held aloft as somehow so much better.
I really enjoyed this film - and thought Meryl was great in it. And she looked good.

I just watched the BBC miniseries earlier in the week and it becomes so over the top especially in the last episode I figured the author must’ve had a lot of fun writing it. I couldn’t take it seriously, but it was entertaining.
