I have a very clear memory of going to St. Mark's in Venice and the guards had some sort of javelin-shaped pointers. If a woman tried to go in with too short a skirt or too revealing a top, down came the javelin and they were directed away from the door. Men also had to wear clothing that covered their knees. No tank tops. Shoes, not sandals. As indicated, the rules are posted. For the important historical churches, there are stanchions to direct traffic into the church and the rules are posted at the beginning of the line - I think when I went, the rules were in Italian, English, German, and possibly French.

When I lived in Bangkok, I used to see these idiots, usually from Europe or Australia who tried to enter the Grand Palace in shorts---signs and all (and in every guidebook). They'd start arguing with the guards--so totally disrespectful.

When I went to Italy recently, the churches in Florence had signs about no shorts and no uncovered shoulders--but they also charged for entry. Once people paid, any guards ignored people who entered with shorts and uncovered shoulders.

It’s actually been a decent summer. Quite a godsend. It was oppressively hot the beginning of July. Then a storm came in and it’s been relatively decent, highs in the upper 80s with breezes at night.
