Jacqueline Susann
Anyone actually read her novels? I'm interested in The Love Machine, or even Valley if it compares to the legendary film.
I read Once is Not Enough, and honestly, once was enough. It was very depressing and there's a scene where nuns get attacked that is almost disturbing in its description and completely out of place in what is supposed to be a romance drama.

Well, this doesn't count, I guess, but I read and greatly admired Barbara Seaman's biography of JS, Lovely Me.
Robert Susann, Jackie's father, was a philanderer and talented fine artist. Jackie got crushes on girls at camp and became a clothes horse. Her breast cancer diagnosis spurred her to write. Interesting, smart woman.
The cancer got her in the end.

I read The Valley of the Dolls and enjoyed it very much. It's a novel about which some people will reflexively say "It's such trash!"...but it's kind of the point. Screwed up people in an environment that doesn't let them find their true north. Interesting characters, most of all Helen Lawson!

I love Valley of the Dolls - really good book. I wish that HBO would do a mini-series that had the timeframe the same as the book. If you havenāt read it grab it now. It is the perfect summer read. If he was about 15 years younger I think that Dominic West would be a great Lyon Burke.
