American Eagle stock SOARS after Trump weighs in on viral Sydney Sweeney ad

American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) stock rose over 20% Monday after President Trump waded into the discussion about the company's viral ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney.

"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns. "It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!"

The campaign features a play on homophones — "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans" and "Sydney Sweeney has great genes" — that quickly generated controversy around the potential ambiguity of the ad's message.

The campaign features a play on homophones — "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans" and "Sydney Sweeney has great genes" — that quickly generated controversy around the potential ambiguity of the ad's message.

American Eagle responded to the accusations on Sunday in a post on its Instagram page: "'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' is and always about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story."

Shares of the retailer have been volatile since the ad campaign was rolled out in late July. Late last month, the stock was lumped in with other meme plays, a trade that has begun to fizzle out over the past week.

Trump's post on Monday also alluded to recent advertising campaigns from companies including Jaguar and Bud Light, which saw both brands embroiled in controversies around messaging derided by critics as "woke."

Last week, Jaguar Land Rover announced its CEO Adrian Mardell would step down from the top job after three decades with the company, attributing the move to Mardell's wish to retire. A successor has not yet been announced.

"The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be," Trump wrote.

Time for us to boycott and destroy American Eagle, just like we did with Target.

Although, I don't really know anyone who buys their shitty jeans, to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 2August 4, 2025 8:58 PM

I find the reaction to this commercial silly. It's manufactured outrage. People are looking for anything and everything to police and get a mob together. It's a jeans commercial. Calvin Klein used to show half naked young people to advertise his jeans and people talked about it, but that was it. Sex sells. And people are free to vote how they want to, like it or not. It's a private matter to many. The Left has really doubled down on these childish reactions to inconsequential things. It borders on mental illness in a way. Totally neurotic.

by Anonymousreply 3August 4, 2025 9:07 PM

The moment a poster says :"the Left" you know he's another rightwing Trumper who thinks all the people on "the Left" are the same -- dangerous people of color who need to be taken down a notch.

R3, please go away.

by Anonymousreply 4August 4, 2025 9:11 PM

OP, you couldn't post this on the existing thread? And who gives a shit anyway?

by Anonymousreply 5August 4, 2025 9:16 PM

R4 Well, you are taking it there and drawing a lot of silly conclusions. Unfortunately, that's pretty typical of THE LEFT these days. It's a sad state of affairs for the normal folks who can think for themselves.

by Anonymousreply 6August 4, 2025 9:23 PM

White supremacists rejoice!

by Anonymousreply 7August 4, 2025 9:26 PM

[quote] "The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be," Trump wrote.

My fear is that Trump is starting to repeat this so much, that American voters are starting to believe it.

And nothing Democrats have been doing, are convincing the voters otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 8August 4, 2025 9:31 PM

Everything has to be a goddamn battle, even a stupid ad.

by Anonymousreply 9August 4, 2025 9:33 PM

Don't you realize that R3 could NEVER support *The Left* after this?? (After having voted for Trump three times.)

by Anonymousreply 10August 4, 2025 9:40 PM

[quote] Everything has to be a goddamn battle, even a stupid ad.

Exactly, R9.

It makes you wonder who is really behind all of these "culture wars."

Who has a vested interest in pitting Americans against each other in these stupid "battles," and what they are really trying to distract people from?

by Anonymousreply 11August 4, 2025 10:05 PM

American Eagle? Is it 2007 again?

by Anonymousreply 12August 4, 2025 10:07 PM

Right, R3… shall I introduce you to Bud Light?

by Anonymousreply 13August 4, 2025 10:10 PM

r6 Tell us about "the right."

by Anonymousreply 14August 4, 2025 10:13 PM

R13 and that wasn’t even an actual commercial, just a TikTok.

by Anonymousreply 15August 4, 2025 10:16 PM

This is what I think of when I see American Eagle.

by Anonymousreply 16August 4, 2025 10:26 PM

Too bad the fat pig couldn't fit into a pair of American Eagle jeans on his best day.

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2025 10:30 PM

This whole thing is just another staged distraction.

by Anonymousreply 18August 4, 2025 10:34 PM

Indeed, is the news really this slow? I know no one who knows the ad nor the actress

by Anonymousreply 19August 5, 2025 2:01 AM

The old perv just can't stop himself.

by Anonymousreply 20August 5, 2025 3:28 AM

wall eyed slack jaw whore

by Anonymousreply 21August 5, 2025 3:35 AM

The Left takes another L. They never learn. Can’t fix stupid.

by Anonymousreply 22August 5, 2025 4:21 AM

[quote]Indeed, is the news really this slow? I know no one who knows the ad nor the actress

Because you’re a shut-in.

by Anonymousreply 23August 5, 2025 4:21 AM

Now that this backfired, their new thing is saying that the ad was a play on Brook Shields’ jeans commercial… when she was (gasp) 15! I swear, both sides suffer from the same mental illness. Now the ad is pedophilia.

by Anonymousreply 24August 5, 2025 4:24 AM

And to think that, less than a month ago, America was united to mock the Coldplay concert cheaters and now, some stupid journalist decided to feel "hurt" just because some stupid bimbo actress is doing jeans ads.

by Anonymousreply 25August 5, 2025 4:35 AM

It's pretty clear what happened. But you first have to take some things as a given.

1. The media is basically conservative and reactionary and caters to old white people. 2. They love nothing more than stoking intergenerational squabbling. 3. Creating endless articles about this non-story is cheap and easy and massively popular.

There was no one on "the Left" of any importance or prominence who was leading this charge. There were no "activists" who were "mad." It was just some people on TikTok who thought "great jeans" as a pun for "good genes" was a weird and off-feeling, especially at a time when literal Nazis are running the US government (see Musk, Elon).

The media shit itself with glee. Thank god there was something stupid they could gorge on and flatter the egos and the endless self-pity of their aging audience.

That's why it's a thing.

by Anonymousreply 26August 5, 2025 11:16 AM

Pedophiles manufacturing distractions.

by Anonymousreply 27August 5, 2025 11:28 AM

All I know is that I won't be watching anything else that Sydney Sweeney is in.

She's essentially dead to me.

I don't expect everyone to vote the same, and hold the same political views. That's not my issue with her.

My big issue is that she is a smart (or so I thought), young woman who works in a very liberal industry. She has played very thoughtful roles, which explore the issues and intricacies of politics - particularly her role in White Lotus.

So it's hugely disappointing that she would still vote Republican. In 2025, there's just no excuse for someone like her to be so goddamned stupid, as to vote for a Republican. She should know better.

Therefore, my only conclusion is that this is a deliberate choice on her part, while holding some very sinister political and social viewpoints, those of which we are clearly not aware.

She could very well be Jon Voight or Roseanne Barr, in the body of a talented, 20-something year old bombshell actress.

That's terrifying.

And that's also why I want nothing to do with her, or her movies or television shows.

by Anonymousreply 28August 5, 2025 11:51 AM

[quote]Unfortunately, that's pretty typical of THE LEFT these days. It's a sad state of affairs for the normal folks who can think for themselves.

And I'm sure you do all your own research.

by Anonymousreply 29August 5, 2025 11:58 AM

R28 “ I don't expect everyone to vote the same, and hold the same political views.” “ So it's hugely disappointing that she would still vote Republican. In 2025, there's just no excuse for someone like her to be so goddamned stupid, as to vote for a Republican. She should know better.”

Make it make sense R28

by Anonymousreply 30August 5, 2025 12:02 PM

Ahhh the joys of the never-ending American culture war.

by Anonymousreply 31August 5, 2025 12:03 PM

Christ, I wouldn't even know who this girl is if it weren't for DL.

Non-entity.

And no, I have not seen, nor do I intend to watch, White Lotus.

by Anonymousreply 32August 5, 2025 12:10 PM

[quote] Make it make sense R28

As I said, I don't expect everyone in the country to be a Democrat. That's ridiculous.

But I would expect someone like Sydney Sweeney to be a Democrat. Or at least an Independent.

Again, she is a 20-something young woman, working in Hollywood.

She played a "Woke" socially conscious teen in White Lotus.

She was in Euphoria. She was in The Handmaid's Tale. And tons of other shows that dealt with political and women's issues.

You're telling me that she didn't learn ANYTHING from any of these roles??

That despite her knowledge base, she would still vote for Republicans in 2024? For DONALD TRUMP in 2024?

Give me a fucking break.

As I said, there's something sinister lurking in someone like that. Or maybe she just doesn't give a shit.

Whatever the case, I'm sick of her. And done with her.

Did that "make it make sense," R30?

by Anonymousreply 33August 5, 2025 12:10 PM

R33 - I don’t think she’s all that smart. Actually, it’s apparent that she’s not.

by Anonymousreply 34August 5, 2025 10:22 PM

Wait until she gets a boob reduction because of ongoing back problems or some shit. I'm sure she has a ten year plan figured out with her publicists. I pray she's not cast as a Bond Girl, as the rumor goes.

by Anonymousreply 35August 5, 2025 10:30 PM

She grew up in bumfuck Idaho. Her parents are probably republicans and she doesn't know anything else.

by Anonymousreply 36August 6, 2025 12:59 AM

She's probably an Aryan Nation white supremacist from C'oeur D'alene, R36.

That's militia nutcase country.
