Why did Trump promise to release the Epstein Files if he knew he was in there?

He never had any intention of releasing them. He knew he would be protected by the lackeys surrounding him.

Because he has all the power now and can easily release an edited list, claiming it's the real one? And deplorables would buy it 100%.

Not only does Trump lie, he doesn't know the contexts he lies about. He surely does not give much thought to the next week, let along the the next month or the next year, about any ramifications to anything he lies about today. Tomorrow is another day and I can be filled with lies and fabrications and new displacements and distractions.

Obviously, Trump didn’t realize the amount of documentation that was gathered proving his direct sexual interaction with Epstein’s girls, including some who were underage. I’m guessing there are pictures, recordings, and eyewitness testimony to that fact.

So far, Trump has had success in controlling narratives. For example, when Mueller's report came out, Trump, Barr and others adamantly declared he was exonerated, Fox got in line, and to this day, they all claim the Russian interference was a hoax. He most likely thought he could campaign on "evil pedo democrats" in the Epstein files, but later just demand that it be dropped because there's no files. Just watch: Fox and RW media will eventually back him up on this, too.

He does things in the moment and it's worked for him all his life. He even admitted this way back when in the Art of the Deal. He doesn't plan things. He's too lazy for that. This is key to understanding him. Whatever lie works for the day will do.
