Eldergays, why did Cyndi Lauper’s career flame out after the 80s?

Lack of Jewish connects? Refusal to exploit her Swiss-Italian WAP? I mean she remained relevant as a legacy touring act, but she was so talented you’d think she would have had more hits post 1989.

She wasn’t very good

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2025 6:28 PM

Her vocal tone is an acquired taste.

psoriasis

You seem very desperate for attention today, OP.

What R2 said, plus she was nearing 40 and pop was such a youth market and becoming more diverse/Black-friendly. She got away with being 30 acting 20 in that classic Girls video when she was a fresh and wacky new presence in pop. But the early 1990s were the era of TLC, Mariah, En Vogue, Janet etc.

Madonna was flexible and determined enough to make it work, but there just wasn’t much of a lane in pop for Cyndi anymore.

There’s always a musical reset/turnover after the decade ends. Only a handful continue to have hits when a new decade begins.

Cyndi's doing just fine, thank you very much. My friend just went to see her and said her show was fabulous. She started on time and it was a solid two hour show, belying her 72 year age.

The heartbreak of psoriasis —duh

by Anonymousreply 8August 3, 2025 7:08 PM

R5 hit it on the head. It's really hard for some artists to adapt to those kinds of changes. Cher managed to hang in there a long time, Madonna did as well, Beyonce keepings updating herself with every new "era."

Cyndi is a truly delightful and talented person that just couldn't make the shift.

"Keepings?" OMG I'm going outside.

Because this would has made me crazy and I've taken all I can bare.

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2025 7:13 PM

She was reluctant to be part of We Are the World because she thought it would flop. Her inability to recognize hit songs eventually hurt her career.

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2025 7:13 PM

When was the last time you listened to We Are the World, r11?

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2025 7:19 PM

On the DL. ;)

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2025 7:20 PM

I never heard her say it would flop, she just hated the song. She told her manager that and he relayed it to Quincy jones, which is why he didn’t get along with her during the recording.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2025 7:54 PM

R14, that must have put her even more on Quincy's shit list given she held up the recording of the entire WATW chorus for a while because something kept making sounds in one of the mics.... and it turned out to be Cyndi's ensemble of clinkety-clankety vintage necklaces.
