There were numerous pogroms in what is now Israel decades before Israel was created and while Jews were a very small minority. Religious minorities do not do well in muslim countries. I visited Israel as a non-Jew. I had a wonderful time. If you are intelligent, have an interest in art, history, food and culture, you will have a fascinating time. A woman who worked at the Israel Museum somehow knew I was English speaking as I was walking in. She waved to me frantically to join an English speaking tour that was about to leave. It was really awesome. I went back to thank her but she wasn't at the visitor desk anymore
