DLers, do you speak another language?

I learned to speak Spanish via shit-talking.

I'm pretty good at it, too. :)

by Anonymousreply 25August 4, 2025 9:00 PM

French

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2025 1:53 PM

English, French, German, Spanish.

Learned lots of English right here on DL as a teenager, long before I started posting.

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2025 1:58 PM

I'm so proud of my insult-Spanish! I can go toe-to-toe with the best of them and I ain't even Latino!

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2025 2:00 PM

Pig-latin

by Anonymousreply 4August 3, 2025 2:12 PM

I speak Jive.

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2025 3:23 PM

I speak Polish

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2025 4:04 PM

Proficient in French and can read Latin.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2025 4:53 PM

French

by Anonymousreply 8August 3, 2025 5:02 PM

I speak French, can read 90% of French media - but it's a skill I haven't used in so long, that I would just say I'm advanced. Not fluent anymore.

A lot of people overestimate their language ability. And no, taking high school language courses do not count - you're still pretty much a beginner who knows some vocabulary.

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2025 5:05 PM

German.

I can read Greek & Latin (they aren’t really taught as spoken languages - at least in the US).

Tried a few semesters of Russian and had a hard time. Thought I’d be better at it knowing Greek, but no.

I also speak Spanish. Spoke it at home, though lost a bit of vocabulary as English became my dominant language. Improved upon my first language, as an adult by watching movies, videos, and TV in Spanish, as well as having conversation with other Spanish speakers.

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2025 8:15 PM

Dutch, German, French. Some Spanish.

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2025 9:32 PM

Italiain, Spanish, and I can understand around 75% of written Portuguese.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2025 9:38 PM

Italian was my first language and the primary language spoken in my home.

I spoke perfect English as a kid and had no problems in school. I guess I learned English from television and neighbors as I had no siblings. This was during the Mad Men era.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2025 9:38 PM

R14, has your Italian gotten worse over time? Mine has. At this point, it's really just a boutique language, and unless you're in Italy, there is very little reason to speak it.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2025 9:40 PM

Yes, many, in fact. English (not my first language but having lived in North America for 30 years, it is my first language these days), German and French (very well), Italian and Spanish (solid) and can get by with basic reading and conversational skills in Japanese. Also studied Latin for two years in Grades 11 and 12.

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2025 9:53 PM

I speak Jive.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2025 9:55 PM

"We done tuned in on the first groove, cat—ain’t no need for a rerun. You squawkin’ like a repeatin’ parakeet?"

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2025 10:01 PM

Dutch, English, German, French. Very rudimentary Spanish.

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2025 10:47 PM

R17, meet R5

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2025 11:38 PM

I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me.

by Anonymousreply 21August 4, 2025 1:14 AM

I majored in Spanish in college, but that was many, MANY years ago and my proficiency is not what it used to be. I can understand written Spanish pretty well, but spoken Spanish is a challenge because most people speak too fast.

I took a lot of French and Italian (HS and college) and can "get by" in either one to a lesser degree.

by Anonymousreply 22August 4, 2025 3:43 AM

R21: I love your reference. Rather obscure, even for DL.

by Anonymousreply 23August 4, 2025 7:53 PM

I talk - how you say ? - 27 no-same lankweech.

by Anonymousreply 24August 4, 2025 8:55 PM

Yass!
