Naked Gun bombs at the box office

Superman, Fantastic Four, now Naked Gun. Naked Gun opened way below initial projections. Are people just over going to theaters? Tired of reboots and comic book movies? Maybe Naked Gun is something people are happy to wait for to come to streaming. At any rate, Naked Gun has trackers stunned. The only big summer blockbuster to do well this year was Jurassic World and the reviews were mixed.

I wonder if this is going to be the start of Hollywood concentrating on the domestic box office instead of relying on China and Europe to bring in the majority of the revenue. Budgets will have to be slashed, I guess.

Good. The pr campaign for this film is sickening

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2025 5:56 AM

Maybe people are just sick and tired of retreads. Or maybe nobody wants to see aging actors famous for other things. The Leslie Nielsen surprise factor is long gone.

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2025 6:10 AM

Negative news makes you so happy, OP. I hope things improve.

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2025 6:31 AM

Interesting. I just saw it this afternoon. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't all that good. I got the most laughs during the end credits. That's not a dig -the credits have all kinds of jokes in them, and I laughed out loud quite a few times. The film? Pamela Anderson was quite good. Surprisingly good. Liam Neeson just didn't seem right for the role to me. The one OJ joke was great. Not a film I'd recommend to friends, but I can honestly say I've seen far worse recently.

I'm about ready to give up on going to the movies. I sit through those previews thinking, "Oh hell no!" Remakes, reboots, and superheroes. Bleh!

by Anonymousreply 4August 3, 2025 6:37 AM

Why do they need to redo everything? Leslie Nielsen is dead. Give it a rest

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2025 6:41 AM

The very idea of originality frightens entertainment industry executives to death. They cannot comprehend anything that hasn't been done before and therefore has demonstrated customer appeal.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2025 6:44 AM

It’ll do better on television.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2025 6:49 AM

OP I have no skin in this game and zero interest in seeing Naked Gun, but according to the Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, Naked Gun is doing "solid business." The estimates for this weekend had it making about $15-20 million. It's the largest opening for a comedy in a while considering most comedies now go straight to streaming. Also apparently it's budget was only $40 million....so not a bomb.

R8, that’s simply not true. At this point these news outlets are being used by the studios as PR/propaganda purposes. That was not the opening they wanted, nor the placement. It’s going to be very difficult to recoup their loses on it. Interestingly, the film does do well with 18-24 year olds but more so with older folks. That being said, there haven’t been enough of them to make it the blowout they wanted. They promoted the hell out of the thing. It may end up becoming something popular in streaming in 8 weeks time.

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2025 8:30 AM

The film needs to make $105 million dollars at the box offices before it turns a profit.

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2025 8:31 AM

It has great word of mouth.

Both comics and civilians I'm following on social say it's the funniest movie they've seen in [years, decades, etc.].

That said, this is the epitome of something I'd rather watch at home. I'm not going to stress about getting to a theater at a pre-determined time and listen to/smell people eating all around me to partake of the comedy stylings of Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson (although they're supposedly both great).

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2025 9:27 AM

These movies are not bombing for any reason other than the medium itself is waining in popularity. Watch when it streams. It’s going to be in the top 10 for weeks if not months. Fantastic 4 might be a bomb however. The theater is OVAH sans a few spectacle films. Face it Hollywood. You are gna have to make the attraction of the movie theaters like a theme park park or something.

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2025 10:04 AM

Any film without trauma or Jamie Lee Curtis is a just a studio write off.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2025 3:46 PM

OP Variety, Hollywood Reporter and Deadline all disagree with you. Here is Variety's take:

"At No. 3, Paramount’s slapstick comedy “The Naked Gun” debuted to $17 million from 3,344 theaters, right in line with projections. The film earned another $11.5 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $28.5 million. It’s a promising start given the dearth of theatrical comedies. Akiva Schaffer of the Lonely Island fame directed the film, which carries a $42 million price tag."

Blockbuster special effects crash bang boom. Much better story telling, human content and entertainment on streaming services. Most ads are more creative with effects and wit than Hollywood “franchises.”

[quote]That was not the opening they wanted

Who wanted? How do you know this? What is the opening they wanted?

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2025 9:52 PM

We seem to have a "[title of newly released movie] has bombed at the box office" troll.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2025 9:57 PM

The flop troll, r17. Can we exchange him for the shit brickhouse troll? Or Bill Taylor? He's sour and just spreads misinformation that isn't even interesting.

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2025 10:00 PM

liam neeson is 73, way too old to topline a movie.

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2025 10:16 PM

Wrong, OP. "Naked Gun" did really well this weekend's box office and has solid word of mouth. It should have good enough legs over the next few weeks to turn a profit. It should also make quite a bit on streaming, once it's released there.

I saw it yesterday and laughed almost the entire time.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2025 10:17 PM

I saw it this afternoon in a fairly full theater. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments and lots of jokes in the credits. It was nice to laugh at a movie theater again. I hope it leads to more comedies being made.

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2025 10:24 PM

I’m going just to see Liam Neeson in his underpants, but will I enjoy it more if I watch the original movies first?

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2025 10:25 PM

[quote]will I enjoy it more if I watch the original movies first?

You'll enjoy it less, r22.

by Anonymousreply 23August 3, 2025 10:39 PM

There's really only one joke that references the original movies. You'll enjoy it if you enjoy parody movies like Airplane! and such.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2025 10:46 PM

There are so many threads on here arguing over whether or not a movie is a hit or a success or profitable for the studio. I would be interested in seeing a final audited financial p/l statement several years after the fact for something like the last Ant Man film.

by Anonymousreply 25August 3, 2025 11:26 PM

It's made $28 mil in total for the opening weekend. With a $42 mil budget it'll need to make at least $100 mil to recoup, which it definitely won't reach. Yes it's the best performing comedy in theaters in a while but still came a bit short.
