Which states would you get rid of or fold into other states

Why do we need Rhode Island? Why doesn't Massachusetts just annex it? Do we really need 2 Dakotas or Wyoming?

by Anonymousreply 50August 4, 2025 12:14 AM

Mississippi and Alabama should be one state;

West Virginia should be part of Kentucky;

Oklahoma should be part of Texas;

Kansas and Nebraska;

Both Dakotas

by Anonymousreply 1August 2, 2025 11:48 PM

"Delmarva" should be a state

by Anonymousreply 2August 2, 2025 11:50 PM

All of the Confederate ones. Get rid of them.

by Anonymousreply 3August 2, 2025 11:56 PM

Rhode Island is MINE!

by Anonymousreply 4August 2, 2025 11:57 PM

As a Rhode Islander, I promise you - we don't want to be a part of Taxachussettes !

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2025 12:35 AM

Just get rid of Nebraska. With extreme prejudice.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2025 12:36 AM

Never has there been a state so quaint and charming as Rhode Island.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2025 12:45 AM

Maine should take Vermont, and Massachusetts should absorb New Hampshire and Rhode Island. What is Montana good for?

by Anonymousreply 8August 3, 2025 1:11 AM

Texas, return it to Mexico and outlaw slavey.

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2025 1:16 AM

Maine doesn't border Vermont

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2025 1:35 AM

New Hampshire

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2025 1:37 AM

Texas- I would fold it into the GULF OF MEXICO.

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2025 1:42 AM

You don't want blue states absorbing other blue states so we lose Senate seats.

There's a reason we have all these dumb mid/western states with tiny populations...the Republicans forced them through into statehood just to grab more Senate seats back in the late 19th/early 20th century.

There's really no reason for there to be a North AND South Dakota. Wyoming should have just been part of Colorado. Montana and Wyoming could have just been one big state.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2025 1:42 AM

R12 Please.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2025 2:07 AM

R13 gets it. It’s all related to the secret society which I need to stop bringing up on here before I am executed.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2025 2:20 AM

So much ignorance here.

Maine was originally part of Massachusetts. West Virginia was originally part of Virginia. Kentucky was originally part of North Carolina. There is a historical basis for each of Rhode Island and Vermont being separate. The one outlier is two Dakotas—that was a pure power play by a Republican-controlled Congress.

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2025 2:57 AM

[quote] So much ignorance here. Kentucky was originally part of North Carolina.

Hmm Kentucky was part of Virginia not North Carolina, Tennessee was part of N C

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2025 3:03 AM

TY

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2025 3:07 AM

Kentucky was admitted to the Union as the 15th state on June 1, 1792, after a series of events that began with its status as a part of Virginia.

I don’t care if it were smaller than Monaco, I wouldn’t get rid of a single blue state. We need those senate votes.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2025 3:11 AM

All the Gulf states to Mexico then they can have their Gulf back.

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2025 3:14 AM

Many of the 13 original colonies claimed the land to west of them all the way to the Mississippi River, they were forced to give up their western claims to that land shortly after Independence.

Honestly, Israel and Florida. Then we could have 50 states instead of one super important state and 50 minor states

by Anonymousreply 23August 3, 2025 3:21 AM

I live in Providence, and I love the state. But honestly, I would love for RI and Massachusetts to recombine. After all , MA is the richest state by median income...Yay. We are very similar culturally too.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2025 3:22 AM

But, Yes. Definitely Fuse those Dakota Bitches together!!!!

by Anonymousreply 25August 3, 2025 3:23 AM

California needs to be divided into at least 3 separate states. Plus DC should be a state.

by Anonymousreply 26August 3, 2025 3:30 AM

Making the Dakotas one state would move their combined population from the 47 and 48 most populous states to the 41 most populous state.

by Anonymousreply 27August 3, 2025 3:32 AM

Correction: Making the Dakotas one state would move their combined population from the 46 and 47 most populous states to the 40 most populous state.

The list I was using include Puerto Rico which isn't a state but if it was one would be the 31 most populous state.

by Anonymousreply 28August 3, 2025 3:36 AM

South Carolina should be downgraded to territorial status. When you secede from the United States first and trigger a civil war, you don't deserve statehood. A simple merger with neighboring North Carolina or Georgia would make those states less politically competitive, so that's not an option.

by Anonymousreply 29August 3, 2025 3:47 AM

New Jersey says: go fuck yourself

by Anonymousreply 30August 3, 2025 4:11 AM

The “Western Reserve “ referred to that area surrounding Cleveland that Connecticut originally claimed for itself.

by Anonymousreply 31August 3, 2025 4:17 AM

At least we can all agree on the fucking Dakotas.

by Anonymousreply 32August 3, 2025 4:21 AM

The original settlers of the Northwest Territories, at the time of statehood, were New Englanders and upstate New Yorkers. Take back Ohio!

by Anonymousreply 33August 3, 2025 4:31 AM

[quote]Maine doesn't border Vermont

I stand corrected. I really thought a piece of Vermont touched Maine, I was wrong. Give Vermont and New Hampshire to Maine

Then put Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas all together. You're knocked out of 5 Red States. Then combine Georgia and South Carolina. Give Oklahoma back to Texas.

by Anonymousreply 34August 3, 2025 4:37 AM

Massachusetts, of which Maine was a part until 1820, surely touched Vermont. Take it back —

The population of Wyoming is 580,000, the population of DC is 700,000, and the population of Puerto Rico is 3 million. There really is no excuse for neither DC nor PR being a state.

by Anonymousreply 37August 3, 2025 2:03 PM

Alaska needs to be given to Canada.

by Anonymousreply 38August 3, 2025 2:15 PM

I would leave the original 13 colonies (except NY) alone. Merge MT & WY as one state, and the two Dakotas as another. Turn AK back to a territory. Warn NM, WV, AL, MS, and AR that if they don’t get their economies growing and become more self-sufficient they could also lose statehood status and made territories or merged with a more economically stable state(s). Puerto Rico would be offered statehood or independence, no more territory. CA, TX, FL, and NY would be divided into smaller states with an eye on remaining somewhat self-sufficient. .

by Anonymousreply 39August 3, 2025 5:32 PM

R23 😂 I love you.

by Anonymousreply 40August 3, 2025 5:43 PM

Which would contradict the entire political and social history of the USA (except for reuniting a single Dakota).

A much simpler approach: Congress has full plenary power over the number of representatives. Just increase the number from 435 to account for a much larger population. The current number is unchanged from pre-WW One (other than a temporary increase as Alaska and Hawaii were admitted in 1959).

by Anonymousreply 41August 3, 2025 5:44 PM

For R39^

by Anonymousreply 42August 3, 2025 5:44 PM

The Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming should be merged into one big state (still with a population less than that of New Jersey and many others), one big prairie with two asshole Republican senators. Leave RI, NH, VT, etc. as they are.

by Anonymousreply 43August 3, 2025 5:47 PM

Not a state, but D.C should BE a state, But Republicans would never allow this as it no doubt would become a blue state.

by Anonymousreply 44August 3, 2025 9:31 PM

Rhode Island is a lovely state. Providence is beautiful. Don’t talk shit about it!

by Anonymousreply 45August 3, 2025 9:55 PM

R44 you don’t need Rs. You need a simple majority in both chambers to define a new state while leaving a portion to remain as the “District” — as required without amending the Constitution. Oh, you also need balls to ram it through. Some day…

by Anonymousreply 46August 3, 2025 10:00 PM

Since Republicans will never agree to DC becoming a state, I think that DC should be returned to Maryland, DC originally was a square with the southern part taken from Virginia and the part north of the Potomac taken from Maryland, eventually the Virginia part was returned to Virginia even though some of the land houses federal facilities. The same could be done with the northern part of DC, they would finally have a voting representative in congress and access to two Senators. Doing so would mean one or two more Democratic Congressmen from Maryland.

R47 that’s not how the Constitution works. Ref: r46 for the actual solution.

by Anonymousreply 48August 3, 2025 10:52 PM

[quote] that’s not how the Constitution works.

Well it worked when they gave Virginia back its portion of DC.

by Anonymousreply 49August 3, 2025 11:53 PM

And… you missed the point. That action didn’t create a state, did it?
