The suspect is large, you say?

Someone is taking the cancellation of And Just Like That too hard.

What's with all these mass murders in red states? It's knocking Chicago off the front pages.

Now, if I were an awful person my first thought would have been, "Well, four fewer MAGA voters!", but that just wouldn't be me.

10:30 a.m.? That's hardcore.

Only four MAGAts? Try harder next time, shooter.

"After a long day of exploring we were tired and thirsty. We decided to give this old local bar a try...a couple of beers sounded great. The owner is obviously more passionate about a certain political brand than running a business that welcomes all customers. Just go somewhere else."

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old military veteran Michael Paul Brown, lived next door, according to public records and bar owner David Gwerder.
The bartender and three patrons were killed, said Gwerder, who was not there at the time. He believed the four victims were the only ones present during the shooting, and was not aware of any prior conflicts between them and Brown.
"He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that," Gwerder said. "He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped."

I lived in Anaconda MT in high school. Very macabre, dangerous, and drunk town. The Silver Dollar is a scary bar with very tough people who will beat the shit out of you. Horrible town.

R11, did you ever get one of them mixed drinks there?

[Quote] I lived in Anaconda MT in high school.
Why? Were you studying gravity knife tricks?

Moved from FL in Sophomore year. My mother was handcuffed by police and threatened with arrest the day we arrived because she was test driving a car and the magnetic dealer plate fell off. She had a heavy NY accent and when they wouldn’t tell her why we got pulled over she told them we weren’t in Nazi Getmany. That’s when they handcuffed her and told her she wasn’t in NYC any more. She immediately started crying. She was just a middle aged mom thinking we were moving to some wholesome place where we’d ride horses and have adventures.

I lived there 3 years and two of my classmates parents killed themselves violently in public places. In a high school of fewer than 400 students, I can think of 5 off the top of my head who died in drunk driving accidents over a three year period. These are14-17 year olds dying at a rate of 2 or 3 a year. A very dark place.

R15, were there speed limits in the state when you were there? I know MT was notorious for being the only state with no speed limits on some of their highways.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 2, 2025 1:46 PM |
No speed limits and you were allowed to drink alcohol while driving as long as you weren’t over the BAC limit.
Absolutely no social services. If you are poor in Anaconda, MT, you are POOR and hungry and cold in a very real way.

This is the rallying chant at HS sports games:
We’re from Anaconda The land of rocks and ditches We drag our cocks across the rocks We’re tough sons of bitches
And they were.

Red state rural and ex-urban areas are so dangerous. Violent crime is rampant and unchecked by seemingly resigned police forces, to say nothing of the ubiquitous squalor. Things in my lifelong upper Plains hometown really hit the fan during COVID which is when I’d finally had enough — packed up and moved to a well-run coastal liberal city in a well-run blue state. Taxes are higher, sure, but I’m not in fear for my life every time I leave the house. Most of the country still gets its news from the lame-stream conservative media and have no idea just how dangerous it is out in these red states. Most people have no reason to visit these places, but whether they know it or not they have good reason to stay away.

Some parts of Montana are quite nice and quite liberal: Missoula, Helena, Bozeman.
It used to be a purple state until just a few years ago when it turned pretty red.
