I thought of nerd but this group seems slightly different (like a specific variant of nerd).

I seriously was not trying to be judgmental or critical, I just think it's interesting that there's this very clear cultural category and we don't have a name for it. Groups like punks and hippies were really quick to embrace their cultural identity even when it was used as a putdown. But a lot of people here seem to be really defensive about it.

And no they're not all autistic, and I still have an old-school idea of nerds as people with calculators and thick glasses, which is a little different.
