People are pissed at the “white supremacy” depicted in new Dunkin ad
New Dunkin Donuts ad getting the same backlash American Eagle got for the Sydney Sweeney campaign
by Anonymous | reply 87 | August 1, 2025 1:26 AM |
Sydney is a fat, fleshy, no talent whore.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 30, 2025 7:06 PM |
That's just cringe-worthy. I got second hand embarrassment watching that.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 30, 2025 7:09 PM |
Well technically brown people always have tans because of genetics.
It's a weird line to put into this ad - which is a strange ad anyway. Some broccoli haired mid guy talking about how he's the king of summer? THIS was the best ad pitched?
Clearly this ad is for their age-targeted Tik-Tok and Insta ads, but c'mon. This ad is soooo bad.
This is an ad made by 45-60 year old execs thinking that it will appeal to Gen Z.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 30, 2025 7:10 PM |
It would’ve passed without the word,” king”
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 30, 2025 7:17 PM |
It's that one season "It Boy" Gavin Casalegno from the 3 season "The Summer I Turned Pretty". He is well known to his generation. Bonus: a big Chriiiiiiiiistian.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 30, 2025 7:20 PM |
If this is a controversy leading to "backlash" against an iconic company, this is the reason why Trump won a second term.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 30, 2025 7:22 PM |
I'm sorry but "genetics" is a weird thing to mention in an ad, and in both examples it felt forced and unnecessary.
This is weird.

He doesn’t even look white though.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 30, 2025 7:23 PM |
He’s of Italian ethnicity. Hence the easy tanning
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 30, 2025 7:27 PM |
He's Italian American; therefore, according to DL, he's not white.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 30, 2025 7:28 PM |
He’s “white”
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 30, 2025 7:29 PM |
R8 - exactly - Latino-adjacent, but it could be Italian.
He's married at 25 and is a big Christian - but of course he's from Dallas, where you can't swing a cat without hitting a church.
I don't understand why he would be chosen to promote DD, except somehow this guy has 6.1 million followers? The fuck?
I don't believe these follower stats are real - just a lot of PR accounts to increase numbers.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 30, 2025 7:29 PM |
He’s on The Summer I Turned Pretty which is popular will teenage girls.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 30, 2025 7:38 PM |
The main point made by the person in the video is that he’s not white, but of course people then say it’s an example of “white” supremacy,
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 30, 2025 7:38 PM |
R13 - so they're trying to drive teen and young adult women to DD instead of Starbucks - makes some sense.
But I think using a top female celeb would be more influential. They probably have a series of these with different actors.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 30, 2025 7:43 PM |
It's so obviously the product of a Gen Xer's imagination. The beautiful preppy douchebag archetype, once an aspirational figure in the 80s and 90s, has lost whatever charm he had.. Now, he's almost always cast as the villain or the punchline (cf. Patrick Schwarzengger in White Lotus).
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 30, 2025 7:49 PM |
Major Douchebag
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 30, 2025 7:52 PM |
I thought the Sydney sweeny thing was fake outrage. But with this ad it makes me wonder. I know years ago there was this weird trend in ads as if advertisers were working together. Knowing how many MAGA's exist, I wouldn't be surprised if this was coded language.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 30, 2025 8:02 PM |
The trend more recently was interracial families. Usually white dad/black(ish) mom. Anyone notice if that's changed? Conservatives lost their shit over it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 30, 2025 8:08 PM |
I think conservatives were over it more because it was such a fake representation of the USA. White men with black women is the least likely pairing in American relationships based on actual statistics.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 30, 2025 8:10 PM |
I doubt it’s least likely. AM/BW must be less common.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 30, 2025 8:11 PM |
Oh yeahm I'm sure it had nothing to do with just blatant racism, R20. Yeah, right. GTFOOH with that bullshit. Like someone is sitting at home with the data watching every commercial and analyzing the racial makeup. "This is a fake representation of the USA! Take to the internet, Conservatives!"
You cannot be fucking serious.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 30, 2025 8:13 PM |
I don't know if you want your big summer product to sound so much like Golden Shower.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 30, 2025 8:15 PM |
The emphasis on genetic perfection is weird. Feels like one of the briefs that these copywriters had was "ragebait the Incels."
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 30, 2025 8:17 PM |
r21 sorry I wasn’t clear. That was the statistics of who the majority are with in couple. The majority being white people.
Over 80% of white men are with white women. More white women are in interracial relationships than white men and are more likely to be open to dating outside their race than white men. Out of interracial relationships, the top pairing for white men are Asian women. The lowest pairing is black women.
It’s the opposite for white women, who are mostly with black men if in an interracial relationship and least with Asian men.
However Asian men are gaining steam these days.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 30, 2025 8:18 PM |
More white women are in interracial relationships than white men are in interracial relationships*.
The majority of both white men and white women are with white people.
I'm sorry but "genetics" is a weird thing to mention in an ad, and in both examples it felt forced and unnecessary.
Yup, that’s not organic. That’s intentional.
Ad copy like that gets reviewed by layers of people, especially when it’s vaguely political or scientific. Nothing makes it through without approval. Last time Trump was in office, we started seeing more right-wing media, new shows, “both sides” interviews, conservative hosts hired out of nowhere.
This time, it's messaging. Little signals. Ads like the Sydney Sweeney one, or this Dunkin genetics stuff. They always leave just enough ambiguity to create plausible deniability, but the frequency builds over time. Eventually it becomes undeniable.
There was a time when advertisers tried to appeal to everyone. That’s not the game anymore. They know exactly who they’re talking to.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 30, 2025 8:20 PM |
Theres 13% of the American public who are black. By definition it isn't equal. When i tell people this fact they need to Google it.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 30, 2025 8:22 PM |
What's weird is talking about tanning - which a lot of people do NOT do anymore. Fake tans are a lot more common - particularly with younger women.
That's what also makes this odd - like an 80s ad - people don't roast in the sun anymore like they used to.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 30, 2025 8:29 PM |
I mean, look at how thrilled so many white people are with American Eagle and Sydney because of all this.
Read the comments. It’s scary. And the woman in the video is so happy companies are no longer trying to appeal to POC and catering to whites again.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 30, 2025 8:33 PM |
r19 People say this, but I have seen far more ads now and years ago of black men and white women. Way out of proportion in real life. And black couples with a black son, but miraculously a biracial looking daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 30, 2025 8:34 PM |
R29 his point is he’s naturally tanned aka golden
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 30, 2025 8:34 PM |
R31 black men with white women is a lot more common than white men with black women
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 30, 2025 8:34 PM |
r25 A higher percentage of asian men are in interracial relationships than black men are. Obviously because they only make up 5% of the US population so a fewer percentage of white women are with them.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 30, 2025 8:44 PM |
It should be illegal to do any kind of advertising besides describing the features of your product and service.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 30, 2025 8:45 PM |
And the woman in the video is so happy companies are no longer trying to appeal to POC and catering to whites again.
Yep, and someone will say it's because it's more representative of demographics when we know people like that woman DGAF about "demographics," they just hate seeing non-white people in the media. And since Trumpers and white nationalists are the folks advertisers want to reach now, here we are. Weird ads with white people shoehorning "genetics" into the pitch.
Pure propaganda now. Goebbels-level.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 30, 2025 8:52 PM |
People say this, but I have seen far more ads now and years ago of black men and white women. Way out of proportion in real life.
Yeah, advertising is made to appeal to target groups that are most likely to buy the product. It has nothing to do with real life.
And black couples with a black son, but miraculously a biracial looking daughter.
It's not that miraculous. It is very possible for black people, thanks to you know what, to have one child that is darker and one child that is lighter. Even the Cosby Show (ugh) didn't beat around the bush around that. You can have a Sondra and a Denise with the same parents as a Theo, Vanessa and Rudy.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 30, 2025 8:53 PM |
R37 while true that one black child can come out lighter skinned than the other, it isn’t realistic one would look like Sondra or Denise with Claire and Cliff as their parent, based on features more than color. Both actresses are biracial and it shows.
One looking like Viola Davis and the other looking like Beyonce is believable. But not as far as they went with Lisa Bonet.
But they at least cast a biracial as Cliff’s dad.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 30, 2025 8:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 30, 2025 9:11 PM |
The idea that a white person boasting of being able to easily darken his skin is some kind of white supremacist dog whistle is deeply paranoid and just discredits the left. That doesn’t mean MAGA is innocent in all this, but they are supposed to be the morons.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 30, 2025 9:14 PM |
We're talking about the strange and sudden prevalence of references to "genetics" in ads that have nothing to do with that, R50. We aren't talking about a specific line from one ad or "darkening skin."
Pay attention. This isn't complicated. Don't obfuscate.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 30, 2025 9:20 PM |
Dunkin Donuts should get backlash on their SHITTY STALE SCRAWNY donuts.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 30, 2025 9:22 PM |
Oh, bullshit. Two isolated ads that are each using the terms “genes’ and “genetics” in completely different and entirely justified ways is not “prevalence”
And the argument that any reference to genetics is an insult to minorities shows you have internalized the racist tropes you are imagining.
Everybody has genes. Mentioning them is not an act of white supremacy.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 30, 2025 9:25 PM |
Oh bullshit. Propaganda has been proven to be a myth and racism was settled the night NBC debuted "The Cosby Show." Everything is normal right now and saying otherwise is insanity. You must be cuckoo for cocoapuffs to even suggest such a thing.

R46 it's true that white liberal women are self-loathing about being white and they despise beauty, particularly white beauty, especially if it's blonde.
Not surprisingly, many liberal women are fugs.
You can turn a blind eye all you want, but it's becoming evident that liberal women are the hateful ones who support/promote anti-white bigotry -- and they're not ashamed to post/admit it online.
These women are now running the Democratic Party... unknowingly into the ground.
Social media has become the left's undoing.

r37 There is no proof that interracial couples buy things more than other demographics. And while black people can have different colors than their siblings-- the fact it is only the black girls who look biraical-- but the sons are dark skinned black boys is not reasonable.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 30, 2025 9:50 PM |
I'll get flamed for this, but fuck it. The overwhelming majority of white women I've seen with black men are very lower-class types and they're usually fat. Just really trashy. I think I can count on one hand the number of middle/upper middle class women I've seen with a black boyfriend/husband.
It's usually white girls who look like this:

You're intentionally misunderstanding my point.
I didn’t say interracial couples buy more, I said brands use certain visuals to appeal to target audiences they want to attract and will buy the product. It's about the likely buyer and not necessarily the highest volume.
It’s [bold]not[/bold] a reflection of real-life statistics; it’s brand positioning. You’re trying to analyze this like a census when it’s actually about visuals. If a brand puts an interracial in an ad because the brand is trying to say it's inclusive, it's modern, and they are not racist. They are also appealing to people who have no problem with that kind of relationship as well as both races present in the match up. You're also more likely to see that ad running in coastal or urban areas.
I say this as someone who has been on both sides of that process.
Also, the idea that a dark-skinned Black boy and a light-skinned Black girl can’t be siblings is… strange. That’s not how melanin or genetics work. And if that feels ‘unreasonable’ to you, it says more about your perception than the casting. How insanely weird.

The references to 'genes' are clearly about attractiveness or perceived genetic fitness. As usual, though, while many on the center-left are highly attuned to spotting racism, they remain largely blind to other forms of oppression, like ableism and its subtler counterpart, lookism.
