Where do you plan on watching?

From the rowboat I'm putting on my lawn.

Bodega Bay is about 20 minutes away. Could watch from a hilltop, but it would be too dark and if a tsunami warning sounded, the few, narrow roads would be jammed. If I want to see people in the area panic, I could just watch "The Birds" again, now now now.

One thing you can bet on is that Trump will not send a dime to the state if there is extensive damage.

It's a warning for Hawaii...scheduled to hit at 7:10 pm local time. People aren't exactly panicking yet, but they're nervous...

Isn't "tsunami" a Japanese word?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 30, 2025 1:58 AM |
R5 - I'm watching Hawaii news live - the first wave could be .1 to .3 meters, which isn't a ton, but the second wave could be 1-2 meters.
That's destructive.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 30, 2025 1:58 AM |
Oh, just catchin’ views of the waves from up here.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 30, 2025 2:00 AM |
They're sounding the alarms here on Maui...and our coastal neighbors are coming up the hill to stay with us. TV coverage is nonstop.

Japan must be nervous as well.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 30, 2025 2:05 AM |
I heard that the earthquake is one of the top 10 strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 30, 2025 2:06 AM |
In Santa Cruz, tsunami warning. The Japan earthquake 10-15 years ago and there was a warning that folks didn't believe, and it did millions of damage to the harbor. (Also, hilariously, I was driving over the "mountain" behind Santa Cruz the night before the tsunami was supposed to come and there were a hundred people there camping in their cars to avoid the tsunami -- at 1800 ft above sea level. )

Honolulu (per the television news) is a huge parking lot of traffic as people scramble to get home or to higher ground.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 30, 2025 2:19 AM |
Umm...where are those planes gonna go to that are planning on arriving at 7-730pm?
They left West Coast or Asia before this happened and are in the air.
The airports are right there on the bay.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 30, 2025 2:23 AM |
I was in the northridge quake as a kid and that was a 6.9. Jesus an 8.8? Isn't Russia in danger?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 30, 2025 2:27 AM |
SFO and San Jose are on the bay, i.e. on the inside side of the peninsula. I am betting neither airport will be effected.

[quote]Umm...where are those planes gonna go to that are planning on arriving at 7-730pm?
Good question! They can circle for a while, but they need to land eventually, and close by.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 30, 2025 2:33 AM |
R21 - I was talking about Honolulu airport and Maui and Kona/Big Island airports. I'm not concerned about West Coast airports.
There are a lot of direct flights from West Coast to each of those islands.
And there's not really a lot of places to divert to in the middle of the ocean.

I'm about 35 minutes away from Bodega Bay. We got the warning and it said CA is supposed to experience it (whatever we're going to experience) around 1am.
I will be sleeping. I'm about 30 miles inland so I'm fairly certain I'm safe.

My sister Patty is in Pūpūkea for a week visiting a friend from college. She just texted me that her friend Lori isn’t taking it that seriously. She said there have been some sprinkles and a siren went off a few times but it’s stopped.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 30, 2025 3:18 AM |
We’re under tsunami watch even here on the south and EAST coast of Vancouver Island - the Strait of Juan de Fuca/Salish Sea, which never happens. That earthquake was massive, but I guess it partly depends on what sort of earthquake it was?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 30, 2025 3:19 AM |
R31 - your sister and her friend are stupid. There are 3 sirens every hour for advanced preparation. She's on the north shore - on the beach.
What the hell does sprinkles have to do with a tsunami?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 30, 2025 3:23 AM |
r21, honey, it's "affected" in this case. But you nailed the spelling of penninnsula, which I always fuck up.

[quote]What the hell does sprinkles have to do with a tsunami?
Maybe she meant jimmies.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 30, 2025 3:25 AM |
R35 - well then - yes, moments like this call for jimmies, sprinkles and hot fudge. THAT much I do know.
Tsunamis always seem to follow me in every swimming situation. I don't know why.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 30, 2025 3:29 AM |
R33 I already gave her my opinion, that they should leave. She feels the same way but she’s kind of a captive.
She told me about the sirens.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 30, 2025 3:32 AM |
R37 - I mean - they'll probably will be fine. It depends on the power.
The first wave will be small - it's the 2nd one that we're not sure about. A forceful 4-6 foot wave will do damage but probably not life-threatening.
Gonna fuck up her holiday though. Although - a moment to remember!!! Tell her to make videos!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 30, 2025 3:35 AM |
Ok, now I received an updated warning that Fort Bragg, which is about 109 miles from me, will be hitting around 11:50 pm...so Bodega Bay is probably affected at a similar time.

It's being reported that Oprah won't open her private road in Maui to alleviate local gridlock.
No link because I haven't seen it reported anywhere reputable.

Shunami!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 30, 2025 3:43 AM |
It's supposed to hit San Francisco at 12:40 am PDT. I could see it causing some damage to docks and boats in the marina but no way it will get to me. You would have to be an idiot to be out surfing, but no one will be doing that in the middle of the night anyway. I might be a little nervous if I were in Hawaii.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 30, 2025 3:46 AM |
R42 - don't underestimate idiots.
Yeah - we'll all be fine on the coast I should think.
I just love drama though. No lie.

R43 I kind of like a little drama, too. I have a friend that is always thinks the worst will happen. If things are good, they are going to get bad. If things are bad, they are going to get worse. I can't believe I haven't heard from her yet.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 30, 2025 4:03 AM |
R46 - but there has to be some sort of payoff in videos and panic. I don't want no 3 inch jumpable waves.
Don't psyche me up to let me down, Mother Nature.
Earthquakes like this only come every 10-14 years. Let's see nature do it's magic - just a lot of water, but nothing too destructive. Not like Japan in 2011 - that was stomach-churning (although I still watched and loved it).
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 30, 2025 4:09 AM |
r46 stop talking about me.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 30, 2025 4:09 AM |
r39, that's overkill. Am a bit inland from Bodega Bay in Sonoma County and have heard nothing.
Ooops... there's a little icon with 5 warnings on the lower left corner of my screen. Just noticed... let's see... how stupid. The link sent me to a fire risk map. After clicking around I found the tsunami warning which is saying that people along the coast should stay away from the water. Husband's phone just got a warning somehow via Facebook. He says it's a distraction from Epstein.
Oh, the humanity!
Hoping that Japan doesn't have damage.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 30, 2025 4:10 AM |
R23: It was just reported that inbound flights to Hawaii are returning to the mainland or diverting elsewhere. To your point, I'm not really sure where this "elsewhere" is.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 30, 2025 4:17 AM |
r49 - I was merely relating the warning sent to my phone.
I also live in Sonoma County - Santa Rosa, to be specific. And I'm not worried at all.
However, I'd probably be driving away from the coast right now and spending some time at someone else's house if I lived in Bodega Bay or Sea Ranch.

Fuck Oprah. The authorities should just break open the gates or force authorization of the road anyways. People are going to die. Who gives a fuck if they drive past Oprah's house and get a brief glimpse of her walking around topless or scissoring Gayle. People will be panicking and trying to save their own lives to even bother getting a peek at that.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 30, 2025 4:39 AM |
R58 - the locals are going to do it. They're Hawaiian - they're not gonna put up with that shit.

Approximately 30 minutes until the first wave hits Hawaii
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 30, 2025 4:47 AM |
Gayle is currently in Cape Canaveral for astronaut training. Oprah will have to fend for herself but luck is on her side. Fat people are buoyant.

My sister is the one in Pūpūkea and she told me the sky got very dark and there was a lot of rain right when the first wave was supposed to hit. I explained to her that rain or clouds would not be related to a tsunami and she said she knew that but it was still added drama. 😀
Her friend Lori was so confident nothing would happen, she walked down to the beach at dusk and sat there right when the first wave was predicted. She said she was the only one on the beach as the sun set. My sister had refused to go with her. Lori only came back when the rain started to pick up.
Lori is teasing my sister and me now about being nervous Nellies.

R90 - there was some minor damage and flooding in Japan - light flooding in certain areas of Hawaii.
But overall, far far less than it could be.
We have to remember, this was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded - so the warnings made sense and was not hysterical.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 30, 2025 4:48 PM |
Lori sounds like she'd be front and center in Texas or New Mexico with her river tube and a beer-filled floating cooler (made with pool noodles and a dishpan), ready to ride the raging rapids if she heard the early warning alert.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | July 30, 2025 4:49 PM |
R88 etc, I know Lori irl — my sister went to grammar school and high school with her. Jesus Christ why don’t you just fly to Oahu and stab her in the heart if you hate her so much?
She married a surfer guy so she’s an adventurer and a risk taker. (He died a few years ago and she’s considering coming back to the mainland but she still loves Oahu.) She can be a bit frustrating at times but she’s also a fun and very kind, generous person.
I think we are all walking around full of rage, sadness and anxiety, and we use social media as a safety valve for that. It just comes boiling out at inappropriate times.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | July 30, 2025 4:51 PM |

And risk being drowned by a tsunami? No thank you.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | July 30, 2025 5:10 PM |
R95 - I hate people like her who don't heed warnings and safety precautions. I didn't say I hated her personality. But being dismissive of these things is dangerous and shows a lack of respect for authority and people's safety.
Hundreds of thousands of Oahu residents acted appropriately - but not her.
I can still hate the scenario and her demeanor without knowing her.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | July 30, 2025 5:14 PM |
Lori sounds like the type who doesn't follow local or international news, uses only herbal remedies, and doesn't believe in science. And then she judges others who aren't as blissfully ignorant. She lives in her own magical universe. Some of these types can be reckless and endanger others -- whether it's their loved ones or emergency responders. I'm sure she's otherwise lots of fun. I couldn't hate her because she's like so many of my friends and relatives, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | July 30, 2025 5:48 PM |
Jesus Christ, r97, you called her a psychopath, which is a step short of calling someone a murderer or rapist. Words carry meaning. Clueless and daring, sure. But you're still going on about her endangering others' safety, as though she parked her car somewhere blocking people's escape. She was the only person on the beach!!!
by Anonymous | reply 99 | July 30, 2025 5:49 PM |
R97 is right. Talk to 1st responders in any major city subject to extreme weather events. They must risk their lives saving selfish people who think they know better and flout warnings. Many idiots go surfing or ride out hurricanes at home and then need to be rescued.

R136, I think they were saying three meters, which is like 10 ft. It's not really the height that's frightening though. It's the miles of water within that wave relentlessly pushing itself ashore.

This may be the 6th strongest earthquake in history by magnitude alone. It looks like it caused a lot of damage and flooding locally, but hit a fairly small port town, with about 2,000 people. Thoughts on this earthquake- It makes me think of the earthquake in Myanmar earlier this year and the Turkey-Syria earthquakes of 2023 - all around 7.8, and in theory “weaker,” by one scale, yet more damaging because they were “supershear.” The two concurrent 7.8s of 2023 resulted in more than 50,000 dead. The 3-11-11 Japan tsunami and the 2004 Sumatran tsunami were more damaging because the sea floor was significantly displaced as one plate slid under another, pushing a huge amount of displaced water towards land, so the damage wasn’t entirely defined by the earthquake’s magnitude. And an earthquake’s shallowness plays a big part too - even a sub 5.0 earthquake that is less than a mile underground can cause damage. This earthquake was shallow, but not extremely so. It was about 13 miles underground.

R84, as someone who kayaks, I find it the scariest! I'm glad this ended up being nothing and hope we never see another one in our lifetimes. But alas, we will.

The NCL Pride of America cruise ship was forced to leave port at Hilo, leaving behind hundreds of passengers who were on excursions. It's not known how many survived.

R142 - everyone survived - but that's very inconvenient. Around 600 people had to hang out and seek higher ground.
