That's such a shame. When apparently healthy living former athletes die in their fifties and sixties it is usually from cancer.

Very sad. Sheryl Sandberg has lost yet another husband.
Go ahead, Poughkeepsie!

I was an undergrad at Northwestern when he started playing. I don't follow baseball, but the prof I worked for had a thing for him, she talked about all the time. She's been dead (cancer) over 15 years.

Wow. Very surprised. He was "cancer-free" in May 2024, but it recurred in December. Not frequent enough follow-ups? That's a very short time.

R5 Some cancers are basically undetectable in tests and scans until the metastasize and start growing again.

It feels like I'm reading about more prostate cancer deaths lately.
Prostate cancer is insidious. If you don't get PSA tests, you wouldn't know you had it until you started showing symptoms, and by then, it could have metastasized.
I wonder if there's a correlation with the medical community reversing long-held recommendations for annual PSA testing back in 2012, then recently reversing that decision to recommend them again.

Is r7 one of Trump’s resentful deplorables who couldn't even get admitted to Ouachita Baptist University?

Most prostate cancers are benign. And even those that are malignant typically grow at a very slow rate and do not metastasize.

R12 That's usually the case in men older than Sandberg was when he was diagnosed. When men under 65 get prostate cancer, it's often aggressive.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer when I was 58. The doctor said it was small and slow moving, so he recommended monitoring instead of treatment. Four years later, it became aggressive and required a prostatectomy.

R13 Prostate cancer at older age means you will most likely die from something else, including old age rather than the cancer. Diagnosed with prostate cancer at a younger age requires a different approach since your metabolism is also different which means your cancer growth can become aggressive.

Vaxxed? People with cancer don't just drop dead!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 29, 2025 4:32 PM |
The mortality rate for Prostate cancer is greater if the man is younger. A friend of mine had it. He was 60 when it was discovered. He never saw 70. But my father was diagnosed when he was 79 and he died of a stroke. The cancer develops slowly in older men. But in younger men it's more aggressive.

Frank Zappa was diagnosed with inoperable terminal cancer when he was just 49. Apparently he had it for years and it was not detected. He died at age 52.

Prostate cancer is one of the most survivable cancers, but as with any cancer, catching it early is key.

Meh. My PSA jumps all over the place. Come what may….
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 29, 2025 4:58 PM |
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago at 66 my doctor said, "Something else will probably get you first." Been on "active surveillance" ever since -- quarterly PSA tests, yearly alternating biopsies and ultrasounds. Fortunately, the tumor is small and has shown no signs of growth.
Pity about Sandberg, though.
