Bears are used as a repeated motif of child abuse in the film. The Bear behind Danny’s head when the doctor questions him; the picture of the bears over Danny’s bed; the disappearing bear rug from the Colorado Lounge.
The tableau refers to the “fatherly love” scene when Danny enters Jack’s room and implies that Danny was forced to perform oral sex on Jack after the scene cuts away.
