Nowadays, there'd be phone data and whatnot for the media types to obsess over.
It was all definitely tragic.
But I can see how an accident like that would induce shock in anyone.

Like part where he was passed out drunk in the back seat and not the driver?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 27, 2025 1:35 PM |
He left her there to die. Stop making excuses for that asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 27, 2025 1:38 PM |
Drunk & failed to report accident for hours. He should have been charged for multiple criminal acts.

I still remember Mary Jo's last word....

The father and the sons were all "good Catholic men" who couldn't keep their dicks in their pants if their lives depended on it.
Is it any wonder RFK II is so fucked up?

Mary Jo Kopechne’s birthday was yesterday.
She would have turned 85 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 27, 2025 3:54 PM |
The diver who went down to bring up Mary Jo's body found that it appeared that she had positioned her body upward to get to air. As he believed that she had not drowned , but rather ran out of air.
The undertaken who handled that body also believed that she had not drowned, but died from lack of air.
There was not an autopsy.
And that body was very quick taken out of state to Penn. where her parents lived.
After ward, her parents apparently believed that it was a big mistake not to have the autopsy.

Old news. Very old news.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 27, 2025 4:11 PM |
I grew up in eastern Mass in the 70s/80s, and we all knew the name Mary Jo Kopechne and the whole story. Teddy Kennedy was a complex character. A redemption story and a genuinely hard working liberal Congressman who showed up everywhere for everything and everyone, yet could never quite wash off the scandal of how he swam to the surface and skittered away quietly like a rat and summoned no help. The car was upside down in a pond in only 7 feet of water. Kennedy was age 37, this was no “messy youthful mistake” kind of incident.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 27, 2025 4:21 PM |
His story was BS.
He told how he dove to try and get her, but then walk back to the cottage.
In fact, he walked by a house, right by the bridge where people were home and he could have gone to them for help.
He also walked passed the fire station, which had a phone outside to so people could call for help. (The fire station was unmanned.)
And he walked all the way back to the cottage.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 27, 2025 4:30 PM |
I don't care how much good Ted Kennedy did. He was responsible for the death of a young woman. It was criminally negligent homicide. He got away with murder.

Freak & Flame this stupid cunt
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 27, 2025 4:47 PM |
R15 why? I am not the OP but F&F is intended to wipe out posts and threads that truly should not be viewed by humanity. Not to click “dislike” on topics or opinions or posters that you don’t like.

[quote] I grew up in eastern Mass in the 70s/80s, and we all knew the name Mary Jo Kopechne and the whole story.
So did we, and I grew up in Minneapolis. It was not a local story--it was a national story.

He’s worse than Meghan Markle!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 27, 2025 4:52 PM |
Agreed, R17. R15 needs to relax. Maybe the OP is uneducated about the incident and heard secondhand that Ted got some kind of raw deal. Maybe it all happened before OP’s time and he only knows Teddy as the heartfelt liberal senator from Massachusetts. If that’s the case, then let the thread serve as a teachable moment. What Ted did in Chappaquiddick was criminal.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 27, 2025 4:57 PM |
He was, R19

The 2017 movie with Jason Clarke and Kate Mara blew me away. I stumbled across it on Netflix one night, expecting nothing much, and was glued to it, mesmerized, for every moment. Clarke was perfectly cast, and Mara's rendering of the suffocation in the car still haunts me.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 27, 2025 6:06 PM |
R18 If you were from Massachusetts, he was a US Senator from the state, so yes it was a national story, but the people of Mass. were more involved. With the Kennedy family in general. And the voters of the state determined his political future. I remember he made a speech on TV about it. I don't think it was a nationally broadcast speech.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 27, 2025 6:08 PM |
Just think how different his life would've been had he run for help; it's a wonky bridge with no ambient light and it's unlikely he would've been given any kind of field sobriety test anyway. Everyone knew what a poonhound he was so no one would be too surprised that he had some random girl in the car. She might have been saved - maybe not - but that cloud that (rightly) surrounded him the rest of his life would've been lessened.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 27, 2025 6:10 PM |
Have any of you ever been loaded? He probably could barely walk a straight line, or think. A phone on a fire station? He was drunk and in a panic.
By the way this isn't an excuse. I'm just mentioning it because people seem to see the situation and his actions as if he was sober.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 27, 2025 6:18 PM |
R25 - he was sober enough to walk 15 minutes in the dark back to the party, grab 2 friends, tell them what happened, go back to the pond, (they say they dived some more but who knows), then he swam 500m across the channel back to Edgartown to his own cottage and changed clothes and went to bed. Nobody ever called the police.
It it not possible to add up all his actions and conclude he was so drunk he couldn’t function.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 27, 2025 6:36 PM |
R26 You don't stay drunk, I meant at the beginning of the incident.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 27, 2025 6:37 PM |
The wealthy and powerful have a separate justice system, and it's getting even worse.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 27, 2025 6:44 PM |
R27, that’s what I mean. Teddy Kennedy did all that in 2-3 hours.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 27, 2025 7:32 PM |
OP, wtf do you mean he was treated unfairly? He let a woman die. He's trash to his core. This is one of the most awkward videos I have ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 27, 2025 7:34 PM |
He was plastered as he usually was. He had no business being behind the wheel of a car. In his inebriated state he drove off a rickety bridge, was able to save himself but was too drunk to do any more. He left her under water in the submerged car and managed to get back home, and devised the best angle to tell the authorities and the press. He is a shit human being, just like anybody else who drinks and drives and ends up harming and/or killing others.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 28, 2025 1:56 AM |
He was presumed to be a future president, a role he did not want, but felt enormous pressure to honor his martyred brothers.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 28, 2025 2:21 AM |
There's a horrible literary agent who got her start by being paid off by the Kennedys because she knew the truth.
The woman was one of the most hated agents in NYC. She made a great deal of money.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 28, 2025 2:49 AM |
R3 He should have but didn’t, move on. It was a tragic accident. They were obviously going back to his hotel room to fuck. But it’s why basic minded Americans won’t ever accept moral relativism over the GOP’s hardline morality. When you do shit like this and try to cover it up, it makes it hard for basic iq people to trust you or the party you represent. Yes the GOP has their equal share of scandal, but when you present a simple world of right and wrong, good vs evil, they will accept the wrongdoer fell prey to the devil, even if still wanting that person to be punished.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 28, 2025 3:15 AM |
Did Kennedy ever described how he escaped? I’m guessing she was blackout drunk during the crash. He didn’t call for help because he had political aspirations. But like all intelligent people who react to the moment instead of thinking about the larger picture, he should have concluded there is no way this wouldn’t be exposed and calling for help would mitigate the pr damage. He was drunk too. She probably was going down on him and he came, causing the accident.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 28, 2025 3:42 AM |
Who, R33?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 28, 2025 3:49 AM |
R26 It’s called adrenaline. And yes I’ve seen it first hand. It can make a drunk as a skunk person seem sober for 15 minutes to an hour. I’ve been there myself during an incident in which I can’t go into detail over because it would doxx me.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 28, 2025 3:58 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 28, 2025 4:20 AM |
He was treated like a prince you asshole. I still cannot believe how he got away with that-KENNEDY thats how. He may have turned his life around but should have been after prison. Dead?-Good!

by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 28, 2025 4:24 AM |
What is OP's posting history for those of you who track. This is a rather random thread to make. July 18th was ten days ago. Is defuctard mad that his great orange hope has gotten even more unhinged with his latest "lock Beyonce up" rant. All you LGB republicans who argued with us last November and voted trump know goddamn well this is some outlandish shit and this man is not fit to serve. Hell give me Biden's dementia ridden brain any day of the week over this destructive trash in the White House.
