Whales. They are big. So what? I wish them no harm, but I can't see why they are more intriguing than any other animal. (Same goes retrospectively for dinosaurs.)

by Anonymousreply 29July 27, 2025 8:18 AM

Whales are intriguing not because they are big but because they are very smart. I’d love to get an elephant a whale a pig and an octopus all in one room and see what they come up with.

Weight and the weight loss industry. Why should I care if someone has gained or lost 100 pounds? Why should I care if they're on Ozempic? If I have to sit next to someone who weighs 500 pounds on a plane, maybe I should have paid for a first-class seat.

The same goes for plastic surgery. If an actor has had face work done, how does that affect my day-to-day life?

by Anonymousreply 62July 27, 2025 5:18 PM

R60 reminds me of this one.

The children. The god-damned, mother fucking children. The world is supposed to stop for the care and feeding of "the children"

I miss those days in the 70s and 80s when our parents just let us run wild. Now everything is about the children. Little monsters. You can't even have a part with just adults, because parents don't trust 14 year olds to babysit their kids any longer.

by Anonymousreply 63July 27, 2025 5:20 PM

Definitely the Middle East - as others have pointed out.

Cars? I have the money now to upgrade (and getting something like a small SUV with a hatch would be very helpful), but my 9-year old Camry is paid off with 110k miles. I just can't motivate myself to get something different until I have to.

But seriously, all that shit: brand name clothing, expensive watches, stupidly expensive cars and houses, five-star hotels, VIP anything, luxury this or that, just ALL that shit, I truly don't get it and never will get why anybody even wants that fuckery. Just don't get it.

Real housewives

by Anonymousreply 70July 27, 2025 6:25 PM

Man I'm gonna get tomatoes thrown at me for this one--and it's against my better judgement to even post it. The other day I attempted to watch One Night in Idaho on Amazon about the Moscow college students who were murdered. I didn't last 20 minutes because I quickly determined through all of the cellphone footage and IG photos of the Gen Z victims that they irked me and therefore I really didn't care what happened to them. Even their parents were vapid, using words like "adulting." I had to abort.

I felt the same way when I watched the Netflix documentary about Chris Watts. His wife was so annoying that it was hard for me to feel bad for her.

I'll see myself out now.

by Anonymousreply 71July 27, 2025 6:44 PM

Yeah, it’s hard to muster up any support for Israel vs Gaza. That’s been going on since 1948. Everyone else should stay out of it. On the other hand, I do pay attention to the news about Ukraine. Probably more so because Putin’s behind it and he’s fucked up the US with Trump. One man! How hard is it to take him out? Mossad could probably do it but then we’re back where we started.

I got some results this week which indicate that I might be quite ill, and it has been rather liberating. Right now, the only things I care about are stopping my sister from finding out about my health (because semi-hysterical, loving, helicoptering concern would currently be a bit much) and spending some cash on my delightful nephews and nieces.

Among the things I couldn’t give the tiniest shit about are Brexit (you reap what you sow), Trump (you reap what you sow), household tasks, my overdraft, my job, pronouns, any letter after LGB, mowing my lawn, global warming (you reap what you sow), the weather, my noisy neighbours and my general lack of organisation.

by Anonymousreply 75July 27, 2025 9:29 PM

Oh, and Israel and Gaza! That’s a good one. I’m afraid I don’t care.

by Anonymousreply 76July 27, 2025 9:35 PM

Any attempt to mitigate climate change/global warming. It would've been effective starting in 1880 or 1900, but I think it's too late.

by Anonymousreply 83July 27, 2025 10:17 PM

R75 if you don't want your sister to know, then don't tell her and don't tell anyone who will tell her.

by Anonymousreply 84July 27, 2025 10:26 PM

R84, there is still a chance that things will be fine, so I won’t tell anyone anything for the moment, I don’t like keeping stuff from my sister though: she is a wonderful woman, but she quite a lot older than me and worries about me far too much!

However, after this week, I am determined not to spend my time worrying about shit I can’t control.

Anyway, I don’t want to hijack an interesting thread with my own issues, so D/L do resume the list of stuff not worth worrying about!

Travel is always so stressful, I get almost no enjoyment from it even though I am curious and like visiting places— once I’m there.

But the stress of travel just ruins it for me.

I'll be beside you in hell, R71, as I don't care about out them either. I think its terrible that they were murdered, and no one deserves what happened to them, but beyond that, I simply don't care.

I watched the documentary and couldn't stop myself from thinking that if I'd have gone to school with that lot, I would have had zero interest in hanging with or being friends with any of them. I probably would have hated being around them at all.

by Anonymousreply 114July 28, 2025 8:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 117July 29, 2025 2:35 AM

R110 - related, but I don't give a rat's ass about how a manual/stick is so much more efficient and gives you more power and control, blah blah blah.

I'm using my car to go from point A to point B as easily as possible. I'm not on a racetrack. I don't need to constantly down-shift and up shift every 5 minutes for every light and stop sign.

It's absurd. There is no energy-efficiency difference with the new automatic engines and city traffic is just not designed for manual.

"The rest of the world drives stick" - I really don't give a fuck. They're stupid and need to get with the times. It's one area that I think America got right.

R116, I skimmed them as I wasn't overly interested.

by Anonymousreply 123July 29, 2025 4:04 AM

R122 - bullshit. It's called compassion and empathy and most of the world has it. Those who don't are uncaring, mean asocial citizens of the world.

You may be only about you - but that's not how a society works and isn't supposed to.

by Anonymousreply 124July 29, 2025 4:13 AM

These are getting away from "supposed to care about." I know that's subjective, but a manual stick? That's not something that people are broadly expected to care about now. Maybe 15-20 years ago. The Netflix Idaho Murders doc? WTF?

As with some other threads, the responses here get further away from the original concept the longer it goes on.

by Anonymousreply 139July 29, 2025 7:58 AM

r139 It's called "thread drift," a phenomenon which became familiar way back in Newsgroup days and is considered pretty normal. Standard response of those who want to return to the thread's original concept would be to post something innocuous on the order of, "This is all very well, but can we get back to talking about . . . "

Genealogy. It's interesting to discover 2-3-4 generations back and where they were from if they immigrated. Or to plug up blanks in your history or discover if family stories are actually true.

Otherwise, it's a subjective hunt for something noteworthy or historical that you can talk/boast about - while you ignore the other 99% of your family tree who lived humdrum lives of no importance.

Your family tree grows so wide after 3 generations back, any branch is only a small story and not indicative of who you are today.

Yes - an immigration story and the details are interesting. The decision to uproot your life and move to a foreign country you've never seen is a bold move.

But it usually feels like people trying to attach themselves and their being to some point of historical significance or prominence for their egos.

Gaza...sorry

by Anonymousreply 151July 29, 2025 7:43 PM

Honestly, the whole Middle East. A warring shithole for centuries that will never change and could be the death of us all.

That said, my inner Judge Judy wants to say, "Hamas, give back the hostages. If you don't, you can starve. Israel, quit bombing. If you don't, not one more penny from the United States. That's all. You can leave."

Having a social media 'presence', including on LinkedIn. Why do I need to post inane things about my life or comment about others posts?

I would hope people grow out of this after their 20s - but nope. I don't care - and somehow I'm 'weird' that I don't have an Instagram account with more than a 1000 followers.

I'm with R150 about genealogy. Unless it turns out some ancestor left me millions in gold that has been sitting in a safe deposit box for decades, I don't give a fuck who I'm related to beyond the family I grew up with.

R165 My MAGA sister in flyover country, who is fed a 24-hour diet of Fox News, called me in a panic telling me to get to high ground because the tsunami was coming. I told her that our local authorities said they weren't expecting massive waves - if any - and that people are only being cautioned to stay away from the beaches at this point.

She then proceeded to tell me that the liberal media was lying to me and that I need to go to my rooftop because Fox said a massive tsunami was heading toward California.

Sigh.

Food insecurity. I've never seen a person in the US that was actually dying of starvation, unless it was deliberate. The poor people who complain that their welfare checks don't cover their food bills are usually morbidly obese.

R172 Hortense the MAGAt has joined the conversation.

Starvation and malnutrition due to lack of calories and essential foods are very much real things here in the good ol' USA, with roughly 20,000 people dying each year.

by Anonymousreply 177July 30, 2025 1:49 PM

R172 In NY, people with food stamps spend them on pints of Haagen Daz to sell to bodegas so they can sell it to the public. That and laundry detergent. Then they use the money for alcohol and/or drugs.

by Anonymousreply 178July 30, 2025 3:39 PM

R178 Therefore, not a single person in NY is experiencing food insecurity.

Try harder, Hortense.
