Am I the only one who thinks that "Dawson's 50 Load Weekend" is not a great movie?

Dawson's gaped hole aside, there are gaping plot holes. Just one: If it is a weekend it's not a great feat of outrageous slutty nihilism. 25 loads a day? Maybe fewer if they started to load him on Friday night. I know cum dumps who routinely took 10 loads within a few hours at the sex clubs of Paris and Berlin in 2005, when this classic gay porn was shot.

Well, smell you, Pauline Kael.

by Anonymousreply 1July 27, 2025 3:31 AM

Just one correction, OP. Dawson's hole never once gaped.

by Anonymousreply 2July 27, 2025 3:36 AM

I think it belongs in the Criterion Collection.

Goodspeed is doing a musical version with an eye on Broadway.

You can’t judge a two-decade old film by modern standards.

We slutted differently back then.

D50LW was about quality over quantity.

🎵It was 20 years ago today! 🎶 Sergeant Dawson taught his hole to play! 🎵

The script leans heavily into the screenwriting adage “show, don’t tell” to its detriment. We never really get what makes the charismatic yet enigmatic Dawson tick, and the audience is left lost in questions about his character by load #12. Worse yet, the story thereafter gets stultifying predictable, taking no chances, as interchangeable tops trade positions like sad factory workers clocking in and out of their shifts. And even among this plethora of active partners, only # 8, 14, and 43 have any chemistry whatsoever with Dawson.

I guess a “classic” truly is in the eye of the beholder.

by Anonymousreply 9July 27, 2025 4:07 AM

D50LW is a story of gay liberation. A story where one gay man says, I shall no longer be afraid. I think it would have gotten more attention during awards season if it hadn't been a sequel.

by Anonymousreply 10July 27, 2025 4:14 AM

This scene sums up D50LW’s meditation on the existential futility of human connection…

…as well as the nature of Dawson’s hole.🕳️

Aristotelian tragedy consists of six key elements: Plot, Character, Thought, Diction, Melody, and Spectacle, each contributing to the emotional impact and structure of the tragedy. I don't see how DFLW falls short in any of these essentials........

What was the thread count for those sheets?

by Anonymousreply 13July 27, 2025 8:56 AM

Is Dawson still alive?

He was, shockingly, only 32 when the movie was shot.

He's only 52 now. Is he in diapers?

by Anonymousreply 14July 27, 2025 9:04 AM

Isn't he on the Supreme Court?

by Anonymousreply 15July 27, 2025 11:43 AM

R14, there were some threads in here around 2018-2019 asking the same. I can’t access them via the Search function but Google offered up this one,

Worst take ever. You missed the entire raison d’etre.

Go back to film school.

From LPSG, someone took a picture of him last year in Chicago, rocking some cargo shorts. At least they think it's him.

He went bald way too young, but I think Dawson was a good-looking man. That probably added to the appeal of the movie. A good-looking, normal-appearing guy, doing things he was not supposed to be doing.

You at least have to admire the practical effects and dedication that went into making it in comparison to modern examples of similar films in this genre. At least there were no artful cuts (not circumcision ones) or just jacking off beforehand and immediately jizzing after 30 seconds to make up the numbers like Anna Knight, Bonnie Blue and other OnlySluts do.

by Anonymousreply 21July 27, 2025 4:22 PM

There's a Bressonian matter-of-factness to the movie, Director Sohl keeps it simple with non-actors and psychological distance, so the viewer can enter and make his own meaning. It's visually graphic but sound remains just as important, a classic Bresson move. And it lets the viewer explore big ideas, spiritual and moral, without preaching.

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2025 5:12 PM

did the tops use condoms?

by Anonymousreply 23July 27, 2025 8:07 PM

Didn’t they fill a condom with cum, freeze it, remove the rubber and shove the cumsicle up Dawson’s bussy?

If so, then yes, r23.

Some Big Mary astronomer named a "binary black hole" in honor of Dawson and Devin Franco. NASA scientists remain clueless.

"Dawson's 50 Load Weekend" sounds like some guy trying to do the most laundry in a 48 hour period.

I never understood the strange sub plot involving the lemon squares. What did it mean?

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2025 6:11 AM

Like the finest Pasolini, the grittily stunning non-professional cast faded quickly back into anonymity. But they will always have this, their moment of glory in the sun, or black out curtained midtown hotel room, as it were.
