Which sea or ocean is the most treacherous?

Which sea or ocean is considered the most dangerous? Which has claimed the most lives?

by Anonymousreply 32July 27, 2025 11:54 PM

The one by the Straight of Magellan.

Near Argentina and Antarctica.

The one next to Barbra's house in Malibu.

I don't know which ocean has claimed the most lives, but I do know that the Columbia Bar between Astoria, OR and the Long Beach, WA peninsula is one of the most dangerous crossings in the world. It's part of the "Graveyard of the Pacific". The "graveyard" has been the site of around thousands of shipwrecks, and the Columbia Bar alone has claimed over 700 people.

The north sea looks really creepy

by Anonymousreply 7July 26, 2025 9:02 PM

Another vote for the North Sea

Extremely unpredictable, with sand banks and surprisingly shallow parts in tandem with strangely deep gorges. A place where many currents converge, and prone to storms.

No one has mentioned the Bermuda Triangle? That's unusual for DL, where urban legends and conspiracy theories always get a full hearing.

by Anonymousreply 9July 26, 2025 9:40 PM

Do lives taken by tsunamis count? Because if that's the case, then it'd be the Pacific Ocean's infamous "Ring of Fire".

by Anonymousreply 10July 27, 2025 12:05 AM

R1 is correct, the Drake Passage.

by Anonymousreply 11July 27, 2025 12:14 AM

The Bass Strait between Melbourne and Tasmania is pretty treacherous.

The Sea of Tranquility.

South sea around Antarctica

The Astoria-Megler bridge that spans the Columbia Bar is quite a sight to behold. I spent summers in Astoria and Long Beach growing up. It's a scary and unpredictable stretch of water. The bridge used to terrify me as a kid. The ocean along the jetty at Fort Stevens State park is also quite scary.

The South China Sea.

I was always told by the nuns in school that it was the Pacific Ocean that was anything but peaceful. It was very stormy. But I am incline to go with the Cape at thesouthernmost tip of Africa.

Here's what a reviewer said of Drake Passage on Google Maps: This wasn't a good choice for an afternoon canoeing despite what the local guide said. Also, we couldn't find any of the beach bars or "natives selling handmade trinkets" and we looked everywhere. Fishing was acceptable. Poor wine selection.

For me no contest! The Adriatic Sea or as I like to call her the Adriatic BITCH. I rolled up in my new Tom Ford ensemble and she told me I looked GREAT to my face. but then viciously trashed it behind my back!
