She-Devil and Silkwood are my favorites. I'm not a huge fan of her, but I enjoyed her in both of those films.

by Anonymousreply 22July 25, 2025 4:34 PM

She-Devil was an awful movie, but Meryl's performance was so brilliantly comic, she completely stole the show from the so-called comedienne Roseanne Barr.

by Anonymousreply 23July 25, 2025 4:36 PM

I didn't like Sophie's Choice but I love your other picks, r21. Doubt was probably her strongest performance. I don't think of her as Meryl Streep when I'm watching that movie.

by Anonymousreply 24July 25, 2025 4:38 PM

No mention of Marvin's Room? I thought she was great in that.

I'm glad someone mentioned Doubt, because that movie is probably underrated. Look at the cast and how successful they were as a team. Good film for showcasing actors.

Meryl has one of the better filmographies for an enduring star. I hope young people seek out her movies.

By all accounts, the TDWP2 is going very well. The cast is all performing.

by Anonymousreply 33July 26, 2025 12:01 AM

She's horrible in Doubt. Compared to Cherry Jones?! Not even a contest. I HAVE DOUBTS is one of the worst line readings in history.

Hopefully the sequel puts her back on track, because everything post the original Prada is one dimensional and broad overacting. All of those movies could have been played by better actresses.

The one actress whose work truly plunged because she believed her own hype.

by Anonymousreply 34July 26, 2025 1:24 AM

I would say that’s a broad generalization but thanks for stopping by.

by Anonymousreply 35July 26, 2025 1:36 AM

No mention of that drag queen performance she gave in The Iron Lady?

by Anonymousreply 36July 26, 2025 1:43 AM

After Postcards From the Edge and Devil Wears Prada, I can't think of three more. Maybe that Robert Altman movie With Lily Tomlin?

by Anonymousreply 37July 26, 2025 1:45 AM

Florence Foster Jenkins made me laugh with a friend who passed later. I have fond memories of laughing in theater.

by Anonymousreply 38July 26, 2025 1:47 AM

The Bridges of Africa.

by Anonymousreply 39July 26, 2025 2:21 AM

I've been moved by a handful of her performances but even though she gets cast in everything, and as everyone, she really is sort of mediocre in the end. I think she stayed too long at the fair, or something. Meaning, in her own lifetime, she has already lost a lot of standing and isn't a "living legend" like Davis or Hepburn.

by Anonymousreply 40July 26, 2025 3:13 AM

(Like they were, that is.)

by Anonymousreply 41July 26, 2025 3:14 AM

She doesn't have enough eccentricity or a strong enough personality to be that kind of star.

by Anonymousreply 43July 26, 2025 3:32 AM

She’s definitely a legend like Davis or Hepburn. A few jealous cranky people on Datalounge don’t matter. Hopefully she stays creative and healthy.

by Anonymousreply 44July 26, 2025 3:37 AM

The only Meryl Streep films I would rewatch:

Postcards from the Edge

A Cry in the Dark

The Devil Wears Prada

Doubt

Death Becomes Her

by Anonymousreply 45July 26, 2025 3:39 AM

R44 Jealous of what?

by Anonymousreply 46July 26, 2025 3:42 AM

I have a feeling that a lot of her films unseen by me: Out of Africa, Plenty, Sophie's Choice, The French Lieutenant's Woman, One True Thing, Julia and Julia, Ironweed, The Iron Lady, Music of the Heart, Still of the Night, She-Devil, The House of Spirits, Marvin's Room, Dancing at Lughnasa . . .are dreadful

of those I've seen Heartburn, Falling in Love, Kramer vs Kramer, Mamma Mia and Florence Foster Jenkins are trite; Death Becomes Her, The Deer Hunter, The Devil Wears Prada, Postcards from the Edge, Silkwood, and Doubt are better.

This YouTube channel is gold, she writes in fluent pop culture but backs it up with sharp, well-researched, borderline academic takes.

Check it out.

Having "a feeling" about movies you've never seen now entitles you to have an opinion of them?

by Anonymousreply 51July 26, 2025 1:47 PM

She was appropriately hammy in Doubt. I loved her in it the way only a child who was the product of catholic schools, could love her. Prada was wonderful fun. Silkwood, Deer Hunter, Out of Africa, yes.

The thing about Meryl is how fearless she is. Florence Foster Jenkins would have been a disaster in someone else's hands. She was brilliant in Sophie's Choice. Ricki and the Flash was a master class.

One True Thing

The Hours

(Not quite a “movie”, but Angels in America would be 3 or 4 on my list)

I'm a big Streep fan, but I wish that I liked DOUBT as much as many others here do. Shanley's hammy direction and Hoffman's miscasting make this into a major missed opportunity in my book. (The priest role works far better when cast with someone who comes across like a relatable coach -- Brían O'Byrne and Ron Eldard on Broadway were just right. Cast Hoffman (gifted though he is), and you might as well say from the start, "HE DID IT."

Comparing Streep's career to Hepburn's is an apples and oranges exercise in several respects . . . but it's intriguing in others. -- They each won Oscar #3 around the same age (Hepburn's 61 to Streep's 62) . . . -- but Hepburn's film career after that consisted largely of TV movies (with 1 or 2 of those being quite good, especially LOVE AMONG THE RUINS) -- . . . while Streep's career since her third Oscar has included AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (hated by many here, but I think she's terrific in it), INTO THE WOODS, FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS and THE POST. -- Then again, Hepburn scored Oscar #4 at age 74 and did a half-dozen TV movies after that, plus a cameo in LOVE AFFAIR. Mid-70s Meryl has just done a run in ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING and a hilarious turn on the SNL 50th anniversary special.

No one else cares, I know. But these things intrigue me.

by Anonymousreply 54July 26, 2025 2:45 PM

This ended up being much harder than I expected, in part because I haven't seen a bunch of her movies and also, despite agreeing she's a great actress, I haven't loved many that I HAVE seen. Anyway, in alphabetical order:

Adaptation

Angels in America (not technically a film, I know)

Doubt

Florence Foster Jenkins

The Post

by Anonymousreply 55July 26, 2025 4:49 PM

That's an interesting point about Doubt, r54. I've only seen the movie but you're right about PSH being very obviously guilty from minute one. It would be a totally different experience if the audience was unsure about whether to trust the nun's intuition. I still like it but maybe they should have cast someone less off-putting.
