Women will soon be able to request a female Uber driver
Uber is piloting a new option for its US app that will allow female passengers to request women drivers, coming after the company has long grappled with preventing sexual assault on its platform.
The feature, called Women Preferences, will launch in a pilot stage in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Detroit in the next few weeks, Uber said in a blog post on Wednesday. It marks the first time the popular ride share app is bringing this option to its service in the United States after launching it in 40 other countries.
Uber joins Lyft and other taxi hailing apps, like HERide and Just Her Rideshare, that connect female passengers with women drivers.
“Across the US, women riders and drivers have told us they want the option to be matched with other women on trips,” Camiel Irving, vice president of operations in the US and Canada, said in a press release.
Women riders in cities where the feature is available will see a new option called Women Drivers. They’ll also be able to pre-book rides with women drivers and set a preference in the app to be matched with a female driver.
The feature works both ways; women drivers will be able to request female passengers too with a new “Women Rider Preference” option in the settings menu. Riders and drivers will still be able to connect more broadly with non-female passengers and drivers if they wish, even with these preferences set.

Has Uber had a history of problems with male drivers / female passengers to warrant this ?

Trump and his minions will try to shut this down. DEI, they think it is.

There have been rapes and at least one murder. I'm not sure how well these programs work, though. Lyft introduced something a year or two ago and since I hadn't noticed and opted out, I was part of it. Male drivers still picked me up more often than not and I'm in an area with a lot of drivers.

R9 right but this is specifically about women’s fear of sexual assault or worse at the hands of (straight) men. The “actually I would choose the bear” thing.
They can’t all be lying… the problem is real.

Not even, just that. Drivers will other creepy things too like show up at the woman's home because they now know the address, stick around outside of it when they shouldn't be, and communicate with them via message and say weird things.
Uber does a safety report every now and then. In 2020 there were 141 rape reports (vs 247 in 2019.) There were 3,824 sexual assault reports (which was down rom 5,981 in 2017 and 2018.) However, it went both ways unfortunately. 43% were the rider harassing the driver.
I'd guess the numbers are either worse or the same for them to finally do this now, and I'm glad women drivers will get to request women passengers as well.
One issue I encounter (I'm not a woman but it's still weird) is seeing that a certain person is going to show up and then getting someone completely different. They still need to do work on a lot of aspects of their business.

R12, my spouse had a stressful experience like that last point you made.
The app said a driver (male) with an established high rating was coming. Instead the driver of the vehicle was a totally non English speaking woman who, it turned out, was an inexperienced driver and afraid of highways. She took side streets all the way to the airport, nearly doubling the time, and my spouse came within minutes if not seconds of missing his flight. He kept trying to guide her onto the highway but she seemed very stressed out, erratic behind the wheel and unable to speak any English.
That definitely should not have happened!

R15, It's not discrimination. Uber hires drivers of all genders so no one’s being denied work.
And riders/drivers having a preference is no different than picking a woman doctor or therapist.
Courts already allow gender-based choices when it involves safety.

That's why I married a foreigner! She has no expectations! I just grab her by the pussy. She hates me and sometimes she fights back but that just makes it hotter. Now my Vice President's wife was born in America but she's a practicing Hindoo and brown so pretty foreign, no social demands from her either.

Thank you for the explanation, R19. I truly had no idea that someone could specifically request a service provider based on gender. Granted, I know that you can self-choose someone of a specific gender, for instance, if I would prefer a gay male doctor, I'll look up gay male doctors online in my area and make an appointment with that gay male doctor, but I didn't think you could specifically request one for comfort purposes. It just seems like a slippery slope. But if it's a thing, it's a thing.

R31 Crazy (and ineptness) comes from all genders--but sexual assault largely comes from one. This isn't an initiative designed to protect women from incompetence, it's to protect them from being raped/murdered/stalked.

How about LGBT only drivers. Straight dudes can be scary some times. Especially when they don't realize right away you are gay. The last Uber ride I took was bucket of bolts and the driver was talking about his gun.

This isn’t even going to work because only about 20% of Uber drivers are women.
Women opt out of gig jobs like rideshare driving, delivery, or other app-based services — especially those that involve working late hours, being alone with strangers, or traveling to unfamiliar neighborhoods.
They only do that if they’re hookers.
So idk women are going to have to wait a long time if they want a female driver.

I don't think wanting not to be raped and / or murdered is terribly unreasonable?
Nor is it specific to American women.

I have seen a lot of women working in gig jobs, R34. They just do it a little different. Uber for example one female driver told me she's fine bringing people to a bar early in the evening, she just avoids scheduling herself for late night rides or pickup from bars and clubs. Another woman I talked to said she mainly works the airport since most people there just want to get to and from a hotel. Another said she loved working very early in the morning because it was mostly taking people to work or to the airport.
