The White House had canceled more than $400 million in research funding to the university, saying it had failed to protect Jewish students from harassment.
Columbia Agrees to $200 Million Fine to Settle Fight With Trump

In one decade we've gone from [italic]Sic semper tyrannis[/italic] to whatever is Latin for "Ever knuckling under to tyrants."

All of this could have been prevented because Joe Biden didn't want trump prosecuted for the insurrection. He just wanted to move forward

Prosecution doesn't necessarily mean conviction, R2.
I agree Biden *could* have pushed Garland to prosecute Trump, but what would have happened if Trump had been acquitted?
Talk about martyrdom and retribution--it would've gotten out of hand.

I don’t see the issue with Trump. Colombia allows far left ideology to do whatever they please. That’s NOT fair.
There’s so much irony and hypocrisy in calling Trump a fascist, authoritarian, or even the “next Hitler” while the same progressive groups or student activists have crossed into openly antisemitic territory.
This is not something the left should be tolerating.

r4 But Liberty University is not under fire from the government for using public money and having a right-wing bias?

All BS. Trump is using antisemitism to allow access to change college curricula and admissions so they start teaching conservative ideas.

Why do we care about what a South American country does?

Disgusting

Why do colleges get this huge funding; its not like its free to students??

As legal scholar Cass Sunstein recently wrote:
[quote]I was an undergraduate at Harvard, a law student at Harvard, and a visiting professor at Harvard; since 2008, I have been a professor at Harvard. I have seen or been subject to exactly zero antisemitic comments or acts at Harvard - none in the 1970s, none in the 1980s, none in the 1990s, none in the 2000s, none in the 2010s, none in the 2020s. I have reason to believe that my experience is not uncommon, though of course it is not universal. By contrast: In Washington, DC, and/or in connection with government service, I have seen or been subjected to countless antisemitic comments, some of them quite threatening, and almost all of them from the political right. My initial reaction to antisemitism is always surprise, even amazement: Really? But I am less surprised than I used to be. I have reason to believe that my experience in Washington, DC, is common, and it may be nearly universal.

Research funding
Since WW2 the US has largely conducted research through the nation’s academic institutions.
That research is responsible for a quarter of the US economy and destroying our research dominance is a goal of the CCP.

How humiliating.
And how does paying 200 million in blackmail to get 400 million in funding make sense? What guarantees have been given?
I guess they're assuming the tRump administration is going to follow the law and reinstate the funding.
Good luck to them.

I understand that they have started receiving restored awards. (But I agree that this administration can't be trusted.)

Amidst the knee jerk reactions, let’s not lose sight of the fact that Columbia did fail to protect its Jewish students. While Columbia has to avoid admission of legal wrongdoing to avoid opening themselves up to more liability, they do acknowledge that what happened to Jewish students under their watch is unacceptable.
“While Columbia does not admit to wrongdoing with this resolution agreement, the institution’s leaders have recognized, repeatedly, that Jewish students and faculty have experienced painful, unacceptable incidents, and that reform was and is needed,” the university said.

R10, they are competitive grants. Academic research has to be funded and is done so on a competitive basis where the prospective grantee submits a proposal to the grantor. The Federal govt is a major grantor. There are many (other) granting non profits.
A President canceling funding like this for unrelated political purposes is unprecedented.

Rest assured thst 200 million will never, ever reach the US Treasury. It will be rerouted into Trump's pockets.
