A quarter-century on, what do we think of Lonergan's directorial film debut? It stars Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo as siblings who were orphaned after their parents died in a car crash, and who reconnect as an adults. Ruffalo plays an unstable drifter, and Linney, a small-town lifer raising her son. It has a quaint atmosphere and the performances and writing are subtle but quite good. Ruffalo is cute as hell in it. Matthew Broderick, Josh Lucas, J. Smith-Cameron, and Gabby Hoffmann co-star.
Kenneth Lonergan's film debut "You Can Count on Me" (2000) joins the Criterion Collection

I LOVED this film. Its very lonely. It really captures living in a small town (reminds me of New England even though this is upstate NY)
Ruffalo is amazing as is Linney.
Did Linney get an Oscar nomination? My mind may be playing tricks on me-

My roommate at the time, whom I didn’t like, went on and on about how much he loved this movie. He took a huge sigh and said, “It’s so much like LIFE!!”
I thought it was fine but not revelatory.

One of my all time faves. Linney did get a well deserved nomination—lost to Julia Roberts.
Ruffalo did NOT get nominated, but he should have. One of my favorite performances by an actor.

Really beautiful film.
I remember seeing it in the theater and being bowled over by the performances by Linney (I was gaga over her after Tales of the City) and Ruffalo, who was new to me, and very cute.

Great movie, if you come from a disjointed family like that. The Ruffalo character reminds me of my slacker/stoner brother.

This movie hits home for me. The dynamic between Linney and Ruffalo's characters reminds me very much of my mom's relationship with both her brothers, though one more than the other. There was a lot of emotional trauma and baggage in their upbringings, albeit different (my grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, my grandfather an extremely abusive Irish Catholic alcoholic). Different trauma than the type depicted in the film, but trauma all the same—I think it was a beautiful illustration of sibling relationships and the way childhood trauma within a family impacts people differently. Ruffalo's character and his life choices very, VERY much resembles my mother's youngest brother especially. He drifted in and out of mine and my brother's lives before disappearing altogether and cutting off contact with everyone in the family. It's sad but it's a very real family story for a lot of people.

One of the few movies that made me cry in the theater.

I've always wanted to see this movie, as I appreciate both Linney and Ruffalo as actors (I ignore his role in the stupid superhero movies).
Anyone know where I can watch this (hopefully free)?

R9 I did a search and it doesn’t appear to be streaming for free anywhere, but you can rent/buy digital

It's on Dailymotion if you can put up with the ads every five minutes.

I had such a crush on Mark Ruffalo after this movie. Didn’t hurt that he sort of looks like my first boyfriend.

If a movie is added to the Criterion Collection, there often won’t be a lot of other places to see it.

It was a very fine film. From a time when there were more than one or two (maybe) in a year:
A few other films in 2000...
Amore's Perros
George Washington
Sexy Beast
Billy Elliott
Urbania
Requiem for a Dream
Before Night Falls
Pressure Rien
I Brother, Where Art Thou?
American Psycho

I remember thinking that Jon Tenney was so sexy in this film. BTW - Jon Tenney has always been sexy. He just was... no pretense, nothing he could do about it, he was just so sexy.
M Broderick was very good in this as well (but not sexy). He and Lonergan have a long history of working together and I think over time, Broderick has championed and financed Longeran's work (as other producers and funders have declined investment).

I met him several times, not knowing who he was. I’m the worst at recognizing celebrities.
He was very nice, almost sweet[bold] : )[/bold] Not flirty or anything… just nice.
