Dog or Cat?

I'm thinking about getting a new pet and can't decide between a cat or dog.

I've had both in the past, and love both, but there are pros and cons for both.

Dogs are wonderful and loving, but require so much work, and losing one rips your heart out. I don't think I could live through that again.

Cats are, well, cats. I'm thinking about a beautiful yellow (orange) tabby, who are almost as sweet as a dog, and are laid back and chill.

I'm just looking for something to love, and I know there are so many of both that needs good homes.

Will it be a rescue dog or cat?

by Anonymousreply 3July 21, 2025 10:58 PM

Will you be home or at work? You might adopt one of each.

by Anonymousreply 4July 21, 2025 10:58 PM

Dogs will take you out in the world, so if you want to interact more with your neighbors or meet new people, get a dog. Otherwise, if you plan to stay at home all the time, get a cat. Or, if you travel a lot, I think a cat would be easier to manage.

by Anonymousreply 5July 21, 2025 10:59 PM

The wrong dog will make your life a living hell, OP. Getting a cat comes with less risk because they're are usually lower-maintenance, quieter and more emotionally stable.

by Anonymousreply 6July 21, 2025 11:00 PM

If you need a poll for this type of decision, you probably aren't the type of person who could adequately care for an animal. I mean, you're incapable of understanding your own preferences and outsource the decision to complete strangers, on the internet no less.

A month from now we'll see a poll here asking "Should I bring my new pet to the shelter or just dump it in the park?"

by Anonymousreply 7July 21, 2025 11:01 PM

There’s nothing like a great dog. Who’s a good boy?

by Anonymousreply 8July 21, 2025 11:03 PM

Team cat here!

We have three and they are all cunts. That’s why we all get along so well.

by Anonymousreply 9July 21, 2025 11:29 PM

Dog team.

by Anonymousreply 10July 21, 2025 11:31 PM

Team Dog. Get a female one. Who’s a good girl?

by Anonymousreply 11July 21, 2025 11:37 PM

I've had a dog for the past 15 1/2 years and love them. But yes, if you don't want the fuss/muss, a cat is a better choice.

I'm getting a cat soon because I really miss having one around to pet and watch their silly antics (it's been about 7 years), and also because I need to keep the rat population in the garden to a bare minimum.

My dog and cat will co-exist peacefully. Maybe not at first, but in time.

by Anonymousreply 12July 21, 2025 11:41 PM

Cats are the best. They're easy to take care of and are very loving.

by Anonymousreply 13July 21, 2025 11:47 PM

When I was younger it was always dogs. From the age of 7 until 53 I had 3 dogs that lived 17, 13, & 17 years. After my last dog died in 1996 I said I would get out of the pet business. But my father called one day to tell me he had found a tiny kitten in the middle of a busy street cowering over its sibling that had been run over. He got the kitten and brought it home knowing they couldn't keep it because my mother had a pathological fear of cats. That was one of very few decent things my father ever did in his life, at least for me. I told him I would come and get it. I became enchanted with that kitty and 3 days later I went to the humane society and got her a playmate. The first cat lived 19+ years and the 2nd one lived 20+ years. After they were gone I decided to really get out of the pet business as I was afraid to have a pet that would outlive me. Fast forward to the beginning of COVID. I was down at a summer house I own and someone put out a pregnant mother cat that eventually had a gaggle of kittens. I would see them all over the area. Little by little the kittens seemed to disappear and she ended up at my house with 2 kittens, a boy and a girl. I started feeding them and decided I would raise them as outside cats, but within a month a couple of wild dogs someone else likely had put out on the road almost killed all 3 of them. They were all lucky to make it to trees. I decided after that episode I would have to bring them inside to keep them safe. They are still with me and are the light of my 72 year old life. They give me a purpose, especially at a time when people were locked away and not going out in public unless absolutely necessary.

So, now I'm old and recently went through a life threatening health scare and the cats are still young. I talked to my 2 godchildren about what to do with the cats should I die and they've both guaranteed me they would take them and make sure they are well taken care of. The mama cat and her daughter are inseparable, but the boy could easily go to live elsewhere. So now I can rest easy knowing they'll be okay.

When you get old cats are just easier to take care of than dogs.

by Anonymousreply 14July 22, 2025 12:10 AM

get 2 bonded kittens. it’s the same amount of work practically as one. they will keep each other entertained and come to you for food and affection (in theory anyway).

by Anonymousreply 15July 22, 2025 12:37 AM

Dogs, they will be your friend. Cat's don't give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 16July 22, 2025 12:41 AM

Cats love you in their own way -- once you figure out what that means, you'll be happy together.

by Anonymousreply 17July 22, 2025 12:43 AM

[quote] Cat's don't give a shit.

You've clearly never known the love of a cat. When a cat shows you love you know you are loved.

Get an orange cat. They are very dog-like - social, attentive and funny.

by Anonymousreply 19July 22, 2025 12:48 AM

R19, do you think a yellow (orange) tabby is almost as sweet as a dog?

by Anonymousreply 20July 22, 2025 12:54 AM

Small dog, OP. But don't get a Pom. Their bark can shatter glass.

Small dogs are the best of all the furbeasts. At least, that's what I tell my little Cricket (even when she annoys me).

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2025 12:59 AM

Cats look like art. Dogs look like old boots (which are also art).

by Anonymousreply 22July 22, 2025 1:06 AM

The thing about dogs is that they are annoying. They beg for food, they literally eat shit, they are very needy, they stink, they drool, and the barking is extremely unpleasant. On the other hand, cats are clean, quiet, very beautiful and are happy to be left alone. Cats win.... by a landslide

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2025 1:07 AM

Orange tabbies are very sweet. Mine's a cuddler.

by Anonymousreply 24July 22, 2025 1:08 AM

Certain dogs attack and kill people, even babies.

by Anonymousreply 25July 22, 2025 1:08 AM

Get a female terrier ca 20 lbs.

by Anonymousreply 26July 22, 2025 1:14 AM

First off; R14 rocks and made my day. Such a great story. Love them.

OP, most of you queens are rich. I give advice to rish people.

You really need both. Cats and Dogs work together to make a good home.

. I want you to find a dachshund and a siamese. The dachshund acts like a cat and the Siamese acts like a dog..

by Anonymousreply 27July 22, 2025 1:18 AM

I don't like litter boxes so no cat for me.

by Anonymousreply 28July 22, 2025 1:18 AM

Just south of the Rishi Maze.

by Anonymousreply 29July 22, 2025 1:22 AM

Get two kittens or a bonded pair of adult cats. You won’t regret it.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2025 1:54 AM

A lonely Philodendron or Aspidistra is out there waiting for your love.

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2025 2:23 AM

I have both cats and dogs-all rescues, found on the beach, or in the neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 32July 22, 2025 2:46 AM

[quote]losing one rips your heart out.

So losing a dog rips your heart out but losing a cat is just eh, whatever? I guess you have your answer there already.

by Anonymousreply 33July 22, 2025 3:00 AM

Get a twink.

by Anonymousreply 34July 22, 2025 3:18 AM

I love dogs and cats but I'm always team cat. Cats don't have to be walked in rain and early in the morning. I like to sleep in and don't want to have to get up for a walk or rush home if I want to go out.

by Anonymousreply 35July 22, 2025 3:22 AM

Cats are the hip pet these days. Dogs are a pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 36July 22, 2025 3:24 AM

[quote]I don't like litter boxes so no cat for me.

So you’d rather pick up dog shit outside on the ground 3x a day?

by Anonymousreply 37July 22, 2025 3:25 AM

Cats keep rodents away.

by Anonymousreply 38July 22, 2025 3:25 AM

I don’t let my dogs go outside.

by Anonymousreply 39July 22, 2025 3:30 AM

^^What??

by Anonymousreply 40July 22, 2025 3:38 AM

They live longer that way.

by Anonymousreply 41July 22, 2025 3:39 AM

Pee pads, R40.

I could have trained my little Cricket to do that, but I didn't.

But it's easy for a small dog.

by Anonymousreply 42July 22, 2025 3:41 AM

Dogs are definitely more needy. I find myself planning activities with my dog to keep him entertained. With a cat, a few pieces of tissue paper can keep them entertained for hours.

When I adopted my dog a few years ago from a family member, I didn’t know how my two cats would react. My older cat, a super senior ragdoll, mostly ignored him, as well as the other cat, who had shown up as a stray a few years earlier. Dog and former stray cat bonded immediately. Both cats have since died, the former stray very unexpectedly almost a year ago. My dog was heartbroken and is still lonely. I think at the end of the summer we’ll see if we can find a cat or two that would be a good addition.

by Anonymousreply 43July 22, 2025 3:43 AM

or just kick the poop around til it disappears.

by Anonymousreply 44July 22, 2025 3:43 AM

[quote]I'm thinking about a beautiful yellow (orange) tabby, who are almost as sweet as a dog, and are laid back and chill.

I have this type of cat - well, actually a tabby mixed with Siamese. It’s called a lynx point and they can have touches of orange. He is so gentle and cuddlesome… actually a bit stupid, to tell the truth.

by Anonymousreply 45July 22, 2025 3:45 AM

In my dreams I'd have a horse. Magnificient creatures.

by Anonymousreply 46July 22, 2025 3:45 AM

I had dogs growing up. As a single professional, I prefer a cat at this stage. A cat is far more independent and stable. I like my cat as she isn't needy.

by Anonymousreply 47July 22, 2025 3:52 AM

A dog will defend your life! Fat chance a cat will do that.

by Anonymousreply 48July 22, 2025 3:55 AM

R16 knows nothing of Cat.

If you are blessed to gain the love and devotion of a cat? It is a life's accomplishment, for real.

And the first time you have THE worst day at work or a love/friend/family dispute, and you feel lower than shit... and you get home and see THIS waiting for you, practically willing you home? Lord Jesus, what a feeling down in your SOUL.

Get a goat. They're funny and you don't have to do yard work.

by Anonymousreply 50July 22, 2025 4:10 AM

Goats are funny and adorable, but they just randomly drop shit like rabbits.

by Anonymousreply 51July 22, 2025 4:12 AM

Goat manure is AWESOME for the garden. Below rabbit manure, which is below bat guano.

Goats definitely have their benefits. And they can also be cuddly and funny.

by Anonymousreply 52July 22, 2025 4:26 AM

Cats don't defend people, or other animals?

Not my experience at all.

Dogs are an endless supply of unconditional love. They can't wait to be around you and make you happy.

Cats will acknowledge you occasionally, if they feel like it. And eat your face once you die.

by Anonymousreply 54July 22, 2025 8:44 AM

I find cats beautiful and fascinating but I don’t want cat litter dust in my home (my Granny had Toxoplasmosis in the 60s). And many homes of cat owners I know smell a bit.

I don’t mind picking up the poop of my dog on the street and even allow her to sleep in my bed. I am sure my gut microbiome is 60% identical now.

by Anonymousreply 55July 22, 2025 11:21 AM

Dog, but only if you’re fully committed to the work it will take. They need love and attention in a way cats don’t. Make your life easier by getting one that doesn’t shed.

by Anonymousreply 56July 22, 2025 11:26 AM

[quote] Dogs are an endless supply of unconditional love.

Scientists have concluded that it’s manipulation. It’s not love.

by Anonymousreply 57July 22, 2025 12:47 PM

If you live in a city get a cat. Mice and bugs stay away.

by Anonymousreply 58July 22, 2025 12:48 PM

Different strokes for different folks

by Anonymousreply 59July 22, 2025 5:30 PM

My most fun pet experience was raising a puppy and kitten together. They were hilarious. Terrier and Siamese.

by Anonymousreply 60July 23, 2025 12:31 AM

R14 - that was sweet - but please put in line spaces. People can't or won't read more than 3-4 lines of text together on their phones or on screens.
