Was there ever a manlier man than John Gavin?

I just watched the opening scenes of Hitchcock‘s Psycho - man was John Gavin hot!

He was almost painfully pretty in "Thoroughly Modern Millie".

by Anonymousreply 1July 21, 2025 10:40 PM

I'm one of a handful of people who love that movie r1. He's one of the reasons.

by Anonymousreply 2July 21, 2025 10:46 PM

That seedy motel scene in Psycho at the OP was a major sexual awakening for me.

The whole movie had me riveted as an adolescent, but Gavin left me spellbound.

by Anonymousreply 3July 21, 2025 10:51 PM

That shot reminds me of the kiss cam reaction.

No one is watching them, but they look like they’ve just been seen. Voyeurism is a theme of Psycho and Hitchcock often framed shots to make the audience feel like voyeurs.

by Anonymousreply 4July 21, 2025 10:53 PM

Did he do the homosex? Specifically did he and Anthony Perkins fuck?

His Julius Caesar scenes in “Spartacus” are extremely homoerotic. But he is even hotter in “Psycho.”

by Anonymousreply 5July 21, 2025 10:56 PM

After he retired from acting, Gavin was appointed ambassador to Mexico by Reagan.

His mother was Mexican, and he spoke fluent Spanish.

John Gavin’s British accent in Midnight Lace is simply dreadful. It belongs in the pantheon of Most Awful Movie Accents. Worse than Dick Van Dyke’s chimney sweep’s Cockney.

But he looked stunning.

Gavin was unbelievably hot in PSYCHO, for sure. I recently listened to the DVD audio commentary of the film and the expert said Gavin was uncomfortable being shirtless. Can you imagine? He's fucking beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 8July 21, 2025 11:06 PM

He was 6'4" of hotness.

by Anonymousreply 9July 21, 2025 11:07 PM

Yes! Supreme manly man Paul W. Downs

by Anonymousreply 10July 21, 2025 11:09 PM

His legs in Spartacus...

by Anonymousreply 11July 21, 2025 11:09 PM

R7 that’s probably why he wasn’t cast as James Bond after all.

by Anonymousreply 12July 21, 2025 11:22 PM

Sadly, he was pretty straight. Married to actress Constance Towers and a total Reaganite. Word on the street is that he wasn't all that bright -a nice, affable guy whose career was based more on looks than talent.

by Anonymousreply 13July 21, 2025 11:42 PM

He was a Stanford graduate. I think he suffered from prejudice against beautiful men.

by Anonymousreply 14July 22, 2025 12:09 AM

Yes actually, there was. Many in fact.

by Anonymousreply 15July 22, 2025 12:12 AM

He was Lucie Arnaz's leading man in "Seesaw" and was very good. His song and dance abilities were something of a surprise and he had a scene where he was shirtless in bed.

by Anonymousreply 18July 22, 2025 12:35 AM

Not unlike Reagan.

by Anonymousreply 19July 22, 2025 12:47 AM

Just as Universal signed on Rock Hudson to keep an increasingly demanding and rebellious Jeff Chandler in check, Universal signed on John Gavin to keep Rock in check. Rock was demanding better scripts and more control over his career. Despite his good looks, Gavin, was unable to exude the natural charisma that Rock possessed.

I have heard him described as a poor man's Rock Hudson, just as Joan Collins was a poor man's Elizabeth Taylor.

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2025 1:12 AM

That analogy doesn’t work for me. Was Joan Collins every truly beautiful?

by Anonymousreply 22July 22, 2025 1:35 AM

[quote]Was there ever a manlier man than John Gavin?

Yes, Malcom-Jamal Warner. Have you forgotten him already ?

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2025 1:38 AM

Well, I think there were lots of us really.

by Anonymousreply 24July 22, 2025 1:42 AM

Doesn't necessarily work for me either r22. But it was said. Collins might have even mentioned it in her book.

by Anonymousreply 25July 22, 2025 1:45 AM

Big pepperoni nips

by Anonymousreply 26July 22, 2025 1:52 AM

One of the actors of his type/era that never went the cheapie horror film route eventually. He did a lot of 1970s TV, though.

by Anonymousreply 27July 22, 2025 1:56 AM

And here we are being fed mouse boy.

by Anonymousreply 28July 22, 2025 2:01 AM

Leslie Nielsen was manlier.

by Anonymousreply 29July 22, 2025 2:02 AM

He belongs to the pantheon of Wooden Acting, along with Lyle Lovett and Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2025 2:08 AM

OP=Miss Dorothy.

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2025 2:12 AM

His real name was Juan Apablasa!

by Anonymousreply 32July 22, 2025 2:12 AM

My family sat next to his family at my brother’s high school graduation in 1976.

by Anonymousreply 33July 22, 2025 2:13 AM

John Gavin was insanely hot in Psycho. Hitch knew exactly what he was doing with that casting. The average matinee idol just didn't have a body that good back then, so it must have been especially provocative to audiences at the time. I imagine even some of our surviving eldergays who were actually alive back then had their gay awakenings to those shirtless scenes of John!

I'm a child of the 80s and 90s and even I recall the first time I saw Psycho (probably on TV as a kid) and being quite taken by Mr. G.

by Anonymousreply 34July 22, 2025 2:15 AM

He did a truly awful Canadian comedy in the 1970s. The wedding scenes took place at a nearby Anglican church.

by Anonymousreply 35July 22, 2025 2:15 AM

He seemed in to look good any styles or degree of fussy period styling put upon him. Not always the first man to catch your rue in a crowd, but the one you keeping looking at...

"He's hiding his charms under that Burger King uniform . I wonder what he looks like naked. I'll just go ahead and day I'll just say I'd fuck him without a word spoken beforehand."

by Anonymousreply 36July 22, 2025 2:17 AM

Not only was I sexually awakened by John Gavin as a wee gayling, I've forever since had a particular fetish for a shirtless hairy-chested hunk in dark dress pants and a leather belt. More erotic than nude for me.

by Anonymousreply 37July 22, 2025 2:36 AM

(R23)

by Anonymousreply 38July 22, 2025 2:40 AM

At least John was game for a little titillation.

by Anonymousreply 39July 22, 2025 3:38 AM

From that same era, I preferred Jeffrey Hunter.

by Anonymousreply 40July 22, 2025 3:54 AM

Not as satisfying as RJ, but nice to look at.

by Anonymousreply 41July 22, 2025 4:00 AM

Hitchcock was forced by the studio to cast Gavin in " Psycho" and constantly bad-mouthed his acting, because he resented the casting intrusion.

by Anonymousreply 42July 22, 2025 4:40 AM

He looks a lot like my college roommate.

by Anonymousreply 43July 22, 2025 5:22 AM

His wife was a tawdry stripper.

Would choose Gavin over Hudson any day. Constance Towers was oodles of fun in ‘’The Horse Soldiers’’ (She’s 92)

by Anonymousreply 45July 22, 2025 5:46 AM

The worst actor in Psycho is the psychiatrist at the end. Completely miscast.

by Anonymousreply 46July 22, 2025 11:04 AM

R40 you mean Jesus?

by Anonymousreply 47July 22, 2025 2:40 PM

R20, Rock Hudson was a better actor. Gavin could be a bit woody, as in the later Psycho scenes. But, boy, was he hot in the hotel room scene.

by Anonymousreply 48July 22, 2025 2:50 PM

Hitchcock got away with a lot in that scene. Daring for 1960/61. And still effective today.

by Anonymousreply 49July 23, 2025 7:38 PM

Lucky Lord Larry wasn't looking too shabby himself back then.

by Anonymousreply 54July 23, 2025 10:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 56July 23, 2025 10:10 PM

Yes, many.

In 1970 I was a gayling carpenter in the scene shop of the Ogunquit Playhouse where John Gavin came through in a production of The Fantasticks in which he played El Gallo. My 3 housemates and I threw a cast party and John actually attended for a bit. He was very sweet and cordial. Very handsome but kind of bland, not really terribly sexy. He was dying his thinning hair black, not a good look.

But yes, I'm the upthread poster with the fetish for hairy-chested hunks in dark dress pants and leather belts because of Mr. Gavin in Psycho.

by Anonymousreply 60July 24, 2025 2:32 AM

Did we ever see him shaving in his underwear anywhere?

by Anonymousreply 61July 24, 2025 2:51 AM

John Gavin reminds me of Mitt Romney - or more accurately, Mitt Romney reminds me of John Gavin.

by Anonymousreply 62July 24, 2025 2:52 AM

Oh, and the guy from Drop Dead Diva, Jackson Hurst, is the younger version of them, as well.

Not necessarily manlier, but definitely masculine Hugh O'Brian.

Yeah, Hugh O'Brian! Also, Clint Walker, Van Williams and Rod Taylor!!!

Clint Walker was a god among men.

by Anonymousreply 66July 24, 2025 4:45 AM

[quote]R13 Word on the street is that he wasn't all that bright

Yeah - he doesn’t have much “sparkle,” as they say. Rather wooden.

by Anonymousreply 67July 24, 2025 6:48 AM

Being a bit wooden is what makes him manly. That Rock Hudson sparkle screams “fag”!
