Elder needs help setting up a Google phone number

I would like to have a second number to give to people I’d rather not give my actual cell phone number to. Can anyone help? I’m very lo-fi! Tia!

No one’s going to help you here, Rosanne.

Google Voice gives you a free phone number to call, text, and receive voicemails.

Here’s how to set it up, short and simple:

1. Go to voice.google.com 2. Sign in with your Google account 3. Click "Get a number" 4. Choose a city or area code 5. Pick a number from the list 6. Verify your existing phone number (Google will call or text a code) 7. Enter the code to confirm 8. Done. Your Google Voice number is ready

You can now use the Google Voice app on your phone or the website to call, text, and get voicemails.

OP, R2 here. Just a heads-up - I got those instructions from ChatGPT. Nothing wrong with asking DL, of course, but honestly, AI is out here doing the Lord’s work. Even a charming Lo-Fi soul like yourself could benefit from giving it a spin. It’s kind of amazing.

I have my cell phone voice messages forwarded to Google Voice. Then they get transcribed in my email. I have a Pixel (hate Apple). I use my Google Voice number to sign up for texts from stores.

I had a Google Voice number for awhile. My mother refused to get rid of her landline and was still paying long distance (!!!) to call me in FL from PA.

So I got a Google Voice number with her area code and that solved the whole problem. When she went in "the home," and she could call everywhere for free, I got rid of it. But she still rarely calls me. I think she still believes it's a long distance call.

Oh well.

OP - NO, because you're rude in other threads.

by Anonymousreply 6July 21, 2025 10:54 PM

Fuck off, OP

I hope you don't figure it out.

by Anonymousreply 7July 21, 2025 10:59 PM

First, you should set-up a fake Google account.

Gee whizz, OP!

Some on DL don’t seem to like nor appreciate you… 💭 I wonder why? 🤔

OP, you forgot to add:

"I'm a divorced woman. Please help me."

Meh, R10…

Based on her posting history, she probably low key murdered the ex & got away with it!
