Billy Porter has made his grand return to Broadway!

He was on CBS this morning talking about starring in Cabaret!

And looking fabulous!

This bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1July 21, 2025 8:49 PM

He's only seventy-eight years old!

by Anonymousreply 2July 21, 2025 9:54 PM

Couldn't pay me to see that crap with Billy. Saw it with Eddie and left at intermission.

by Anonymousreply 3July 21, 2025 11:53 PM

Three Negro leads now in the show; can't see that a summer-tourist draw. He is over-the-top tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 4July 22, 2025 12:23 AM

He about to find out the hard way he's not the box office draw he imagines himself to be.

by Anonymousreply 5July 22, 2025 12:52 AM

R4 you don’t get bored?

by Anonymousreply 6July 22, 2025 12:55 AM

R5, if it fails, he won't blame himself. He’ll attribute it to racism.

[Quote] He about to find out the hard way he's not the box office draw he imagines himself to be.

No one is any third cast is

by Anonymousreply 11July 22, 2025 8:51 AM

I wouldn’t mind seeing him but the entire show was just meh

by Anonymousreply 12July 22, 2025 9:14 AM

[Quote] if it fails, he won't blame himself. He’ll attribute it to racism.

Black people usually only get a chance when something is already failing

by Anonymousreply 13July 22, 2025 9:15 AM

He is so grim.

by Anonymousreply 14July 22, 2025 11:23 AM

He revels in being what people consider a stupid, silly, stereotype, mistakenly thinking he's avant-garde and daring.

Billy, you are a bore and a joke. WHEN will you go away?

Whomever put up the money for this production is a fool (soon parted with his money.)

by Anonymousreply 15July 22, 2025 12:14 PM

Forgot this.

What a fool.

Billy Porter IS Mama Rose! "I had a dreammm, a dream about ME, baby!" Coming sooner than you think!

by Anonymousreply 17July 22, 2025 12:24 PM

He’s pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 18July 22, 2025 12:29 PM

Is he related to that colored singer Little Dicky who sang that tune "Good Golly Aunt Polly" on the Ed Sullivan show ?

by Anonymousreply 19July 22, 2025 12:36 PM

R17

You speak the truth. The next incarnation of "Gypsy", because it isn't already dead enough. will be a drag queen playing Mama Rose.

Porter will be tanned, rested, and ready. If we're lucky, it will close in previews and we'll be safe from another revival for ten years. If we're lucky.

by Anonymousreply 20July 22, 2025 12:51 PM

When I think of Weimar cabaret song stylings I think of Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2025 12:53 PM

Alan Cumming, a gay (bi-sexual?) actor, already played the part gay and subversive, to rave reviews.

And he didn't have to play it as a flaming queen.

I guess Porter said, "I'll show YOU how to play it "queer". Cause you know, gay isn't good enough anymore.

by Anonymousreply 22July 22, 2025 1:01 PM

The show isn't much and if sexy gay guy Orville Peck or faux alt/cult Alan Cummings can't make it work I have little hope for stunt queen Ms. Porter.

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2025 2:12 PM

I find him repellent.

by Anonymousreply 24July 22, 2025 2:48 PM

I enjoyed the refreshing masculine energy Orville Peck brought to the role. It was a nice counter to all the forced lip-smacking "queer" posturing that has infected so many performances of late. The thought of Billy Porter in that role gives me nightmares.

by Anonymousreply 25July 22, 2025 2:55 PM

I'd take Orville any day...but I wish he'd lose that fucking mask.

by Anonymousreply 26July 22, 2025 3:03 PM

[quote]It was a nice counter to all the forced lip-smacking "queer" posturing that has infected so many performances of late.

Is that how Redmayne played it? Thinking back to his performance on the Tonys, his interpretation just seemed to be more cartoonish than anything.

Porter just seems to be playing Porter, not really trying to inhabit the character.

by Anonymousreply 27July 22, 2025 3:09 PM

I nominate Bad Bunny.

by Anonymousreply 28July 22, 2025 3:13 PM

[quote] The show isn't much and if sexy gay guy Orville Peck or faux alt/cult Alan Cummings can't make it work

Alan Cummings DID make it work. It made him a star.

by Anonymousreply 29July 22, 2025 3:53 PM

What would be radical now would be to go back to something like the original staging, when the actual events of Weimar and Nazi Germany were still fresh in many adult's minds. Now "Cabaret" is staged and performed by arrested adolescents.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2025 3:57 PM

Egads! The female lead is fat!

No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2025 4:07 PM

[quote]Three Negro leads now in the show; can't see that a summer-tourist draw. He is over-the-top tiresome.

We didn't come all the way from Great Neck to see a show with a bunch of schvartzes in it.

by Anonymousreply 32July 22, 2025 4:14 PM

Make it go away. Wish it into the cornfield.

by Anonymousreply 33July 22, 2025 4:36 PM

Oh, god, kill it with fire.

Good lord r34. Patti Labelle has really let herself go.

by Anonymousreply 35July 22, 2025 7:06 PM

One presumes the producer has seen proof that Billy Porter can fill seats. It seems doubtful.

by Anonymousreply 36July 22, 2025 9:04 PM

I do not know who or what that is

by Anonymousreply 37July 22, 2025 9:09 PM

You're lucky r37! I wish I had no idea who Billy Porter is.

by Anonymousreply 38July 22, 2025 9:32 PM

Omg please someone cast Dean Cain in this role next

by Anonymousreply 39August 8, 2025 11:05 PM

[quote]Alan Cumming, a gay (bi-sexual?) actor, already played the part gay and subversive, to rave reviews.

Alan did a modern-day update of Joel Grey's performance.

It wasn't revelatory.

by Anonymousreply 40August 8, 2025 11:19 PM

R34 Wow! I thought Eartha Kitt was dead.

by Anonymousreply 41August 8, 2025 11:21 PM

Miss Billious is getting her ass handed to her on TikTok.

by Anonymousreply 42August 8, 2025 11:22 PM

The show was down more than $500,000 the week he took over and just as bad the second week. How will it hang on for two more months? He's no Lea Michele that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2025 11:28 PM

[quote]He's no Lea Michele that's for sure.

And where is that racist cunt since Funny Girl closed?

Nowhere

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2025 11:31 PM

I wouldn’t minding seeing Cynthia Erivo take a crack it.

by Anonymousreply 45August 8, 2025 11:37 PM

Broadway's 'Cabaret' may still close earlier than expected even with the Billy Porter stunt casting.

It's not really his fault. Cabaret has done okay, but it's been a challenge. It's a good show, but there have been been too many revivals of Cabaret throughout the years (much the same as 'Gypsy'), and potential Broadway ticket buyers don't need to see the same show (albeit with different cast members) again.

How 'Chicago' keeps chugging along year after year is a mystery, except that the producers have managed some appealing stunt casting such as a few Real Housewives for busloads of tourists who think performances by semi-celebrities with minimum talent who have appeared on reality trash TV. is worth it

by Anonymousreply 46August 8, 2025 11:51 PM

R40, I think Cumming’s Emcee was “revelatory” insofar as he created a new blueprint for the character that’s likely to be followed much more so going forward than Grey’s take on it (which was a lot less garish by comparison).

This is why I felt this iteration of “Cabaret” was so unnecessary, just a pointless exercise in trying to raise the level of outlandishness over the Mendes/Cumming version that no one asked for (and why Redmayne came across so badly on the Tonys). My fear is that we’ll likely never see a normal staging of this show ever again because every director will try to top what came before.

by Anonymousreply 47August 8, 2025 11:51 PM

Im 10 years older than that bitch and look WAY better. That being said ,I did like him on Pose very much.

by Anonymousreply 48August 8, 2025 11:59 PM

Listening to his audiobook at the moment. He is Diana-cream-video-guy level throughout. Hoping for some broken hearts club dish.

by Anonymousreply 49August 9, 2025 12:35 AM

Diana-cream-video? Was she filmed smooshing?

by Anonymousreply 50August 9, 2025 12:55 AM

[quote]Black people usually only get a chance when something is already failing

R13 please, when Broadway reopened in 2021 after the Covid pandemic, post-George Floyd and several months into Biden's term, there were a slew of plays about blacks written by blacks that bombed, one after the other, despite getting raves from critics and a shitload of Tony nominations (Slave Play, Clyde's, Skeleton Crew, Ain't No Mo, Fat Ham, Jaja's African Hair Braiding, A Strange Loop, Topdog/Underdog, Purlie Victorious, etc.).

Of course, it didn't help that the message was often that white people are inherently evil.

Most theatergoers are white, so that was dumb of producers.

by Anonymousreply 51August 9, 2025 1:31 AM

The NY theater audience is about 95% white.

by Anonymousreply 52August 9, 2025 1:51 AM

So 5% need deporting? On it!

by Anonymousreply 53August 9, 2025 2:19 AM

Precisely R40. They keep reviving Sam Mendes' Cabaret rather than the show itself.

by Anonymousreply 54August 9, 2025 3:10 AM

I gotta hand it to the interview staff.

This show is a proven winner and the gross is in the toilet. I know we’re getting towards the end of the run, but I think his comments have been careless and even foolish.

Just do the role Billy, don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

by Anonymousreply 58August 27, 2025 10:33 PM

[quote]Jaja's African Hair Braiding

Are you kidding with this shit?? That was an actual play??!

by Anonymousreply 59August 27, 2025 10:38 PM

Billy Porter makes me want to puke.

by Anonymousreply 60August 27, 2025 10:51 PM

I listened to his singing in the first part of the clip, and it sounded so affected and over the top, and sort of like a plaintive wail. Just awful.

by Anonymousreply 61August 27, 2025 11:12 PM

Meh.... repackaged Little Richard ... next

by Anonymousreply 62August 27, 2025 11:16 PM

He rarely looks fabulous. He usually looks like a hot ass mess.

by Anonymousreply 63August 27, 2025 11:22 PM

He needs to whiten his lower teeth, his uppers are super white and the lowers are mustard colored.

by Anonymousreply 64August 27, 2025 11:23 PM

WHET Raúl Esparza?

by Anonymousreply 65August 27, 2025 11:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 68August 28, 2025 1:07 AM

Has anyone on DL actually seen him in the show? If you did, are you too embarrassed to admit it?
