He was Cosbys favorite “kid” if that really means anything. I wonder how many of the kids knew what a scumbag Cosby was. Joseph Phillips spoke out against Pill Cosby but that’s it. I can’t really imagine Cosby being that discreet when it came to women he was trying to rape that ended up on the set. They all kept their mouths shut because they didn’t want to mess with a smash show. Still sad MJW had to go out like this at a relatively young age.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 21, 2025 6:41 PM |
Should have read the signs:
[quote]The beaches on the southern side of things are known for rip tides — a powerful current that can pull in unsuspecting swimmers. The more main beaches do have signs with a warning, so keep an eye for that on the beach itself or the walkway on the beach. Watch for signs depicting a swimmer with a red circle and line through it and a warning "precaution corrientes" or "corrientes peligrosas". Or, you may just see a red flag posted on the shoreline. Either way, if you see these warning signs, spend your day on the sand, not in the water.

Could have been a medical issue while swimming - or riptide - or even a seaweed pile.
A friend of mine and his partner went to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate their anniversary - his partner went out for a swim, had a heart attack in the ocean and that was it. Dead.
I think he was early 40s.
Just awful to go on a vacation with another person or family and come home with one less.

Really enjoyed his character on The Resident. Wow.
See???? Although I was born in Hawaii and grew up in Southern CA and practically LIVED at the beach swimming and boogie boarding, as an adult I found a NEW respect for the ocean. I thought I'd try out boogie boarding again up in Northern CA and it took me just ONE time in my late 30s to get caught in a massive rip tide and almost 20 minutes to fight to get back to the shore. This was after I had gone snorkeling in HI twice (and even swam with turtles).
That was it - never again. Between the sharks and the rip tides, NOPE. The ocean is not my home. Beautiful to look at, visit, dip toes or legs in, but that's it.

If you get caught in a current, don't try to fight it. The power of water is massive, and you will just exhaust yourself. Instead, swim perpendicular to it such that you get out of it.

I understand it was the Cosby show that made Malcolm-Jamal Warner a household name and led to a long career. But it still feels unseemly, in my opinion, for Bill Cosby to be making any public comments about anything or anyone. He should be grateful not to have suffered worse consequences, not only for his behavior, but for the effect his behavior had on his fellow cast members, his family, and so on. It would be better if he just remained silent and out of the public eye altogether.
I suppose there’s a certain irony in my harsh attitude. I never gave the Cosby show much thought. But I adored I Spy; the Bill Cosby of THAT era was an early crush of mine.

There was a 20th anniversary special, sans Lisa Bonet.
The show was event viewing back in the day, with 30 million people a week watching. It was number one for five seasons. It single handedly revived NBC, and (along with Cheers, Family Ties, Night Court and Hill Street Blues) created their successful Thursday night TV block which NBC dominated for twenty years.
No show pulls that kinds of ratings or influence anymore.

Would he have still been making money from The Cosby Show reruns/streaming? I've always been curious what the financial impact of the Cobsy fall from grace was for that cast.
I thought the early 90s with Friends and Seinfeld were the first shows where the cast got paid for reruns forever.
I'd imagine he probably got better deals for his later TV shows but they were no where near as successful as The Cosby Show.

I think this was the whole contention of the actor's strike which crippled the industry a couple of years ago. Actors were compensated satisfactorily in syndication packages (of old shows), but once the show went streaming - they received next-to- nothing if anything at all. IIRC, they were paid a token flat-fee, and they wanted a higher fee with the new contract. I believe the agreement going forward was they'd get a much higher fee on future deals for new programs. The ones already streaming was not included in the new contract. Please correct me if I'm wrong. *And I believe this was a major contention with the writers' strike which happened right after.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | July 23, 2025 6:33 AM |
30K and 40K and episode back in the mid-80s for new TV stars was a lot of money. I'm sure veteran TV stars such as Bea Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan could demand much more than that.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | July 23, 2025 11:42 AM |
[quote]Warner worked quite consistently, but may have lost out on potential residuals had The Cosby Show run more continuously.
Beyond the Cosby issues, residuals decrease up to a point. After the show reruns 13 times, the actor will get about 5% of the original fee. The Cosby kids would have hit that a long time ago, even before Cosby's downfall.
[quote]How much do you think The Cosby kids made an episode? At just $30K they would have made over 4 million.
Cosby, himself, by the end made 4 million per episode. Phylicia would have been less but still more than the kids.
They were child actors. At that point in history, they probably made between 5-15K per episode. By the end, some of the kids, may have hit 20K.
Raven-Symoné made that per episode of "That's So Raven" but that was also her show and it was on Disney.

Sabrina is almost 70. Phylicia is almost 80. (Although Cosby said they talked about it and grieved together.) Erika Alexander will probably do it on her (actually popular) podcast but she and Keisha don't really post much. Tempestt doesn't at all. Same with Lisa Bonet these days.

They have paid publicists / interns / etc. who take care of this for them, no matter their age. It keeps them current.
Publicist meets he in her dressing room and asks, "Phylicia, can you share a few thoughts on the passing of Malcom-Jamal Warner? Remember him ? He played your son 'Theo' on 'The Cosby Show'. Just a few words we can put out as an official comment from you." Publicist hits 'record' on his Smartphone.
She takes a sip of Lemongrass tea, and ponders. She doesn't know what to say, as she hasn't spoken to him in decades. The publicist offers a few 'generic' ideas - he was a nice guy, she loved working with him, etc.
She smiles gently, and profoundly says, "He was a fine young actor. My memories of him will always be a blessing to me."
Perfect! Publicist then sends it off to the intern, who posts this on Phylicia's social media accounts. Done ! She made a statement. It's touching and beautiful.

r258 honey, before you go running your mouth off maybe you should do some research. Miss Phylicia hasn't posted anything to her Insta since 2021.

[quote]They have paid publicists / interns / etc. ...
No. I don't think many of them care about being "current" and releasing statements on your own is pretty normal these days.

Once again, I don't know what you were doing with that story but ... she has two social media accounts she hasn't updated in years. She simply does not give a shit to do so.

I doubt Sabrina and Tempestt have any kind of publicist, neither has acted in years. Lisa Bonet is similar, but is somewhat in the public eye still.

If they create the post what benefit would it have then? If you want a heartfelt message, the publicist's statement is not what I want to read.

[quote]Sabrina is almost 70. Phylicia is almost 80.
Wait, she had her at 10?

Okay, so how can we make this more about me?

R259 I'm fine, thanks for asking !
R260 Thanks for the advice, cupcake ! I don't follow her on social media.
R261 I know it's been said for years that older celebrities have a paid team of interns and publicists who control their social media and mainstream media when asked for statements (Streisand, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross come to mind) . I thought Rashad had an active social media.
