You beat me to it. He seemed like a really nice and drama free guy. I hate to hear this.

by Anonymousreply 1July 21, 2025 5:25 PM

Is the stereotype true, did he not know how to swim?

RIP, Theo Huxtable.

RIP.

by Anonymousreply 7July 21, 2025 5:30 PM

wtf. How do you accidentally drown at 54 as a millionaire.

by Anonymousreply 15July 21, 2025 5:38 PM

Wow. We were just discussing Cosby show on recent threads too. I swear black men in the entertainment industry do not live long lives.

r15 "How do you accidentally drown..."

Are you retarded? What does wealth have to do with an accidental drowning? Do you think he has a bodyguard just holding his hand 24/7?

by Anonymousreply 21July 21, 2025 5:41 PM

I had no idea he was once married to Regina King.

by Anonymousreply 22July 21, 2025 5:43 PM

r22 He wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 23July 21, 2025 5:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 52July 21, 2025 6:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 54July 21, 2025 6:40 PM

He was Cosbys favorite “kid” if that really means anything. I wonder how many of the kids knew what a scumbag Cosby was. Joseph Phillips spoke out against Pill Cosby but that’s it. I can’t really imagine Cosby being that discreet when it came to women he was trying to rape that ended up on the set. They all kept their mouths shut because they didn’t want to mess with a smash show. Still sad MJW had to go out like this at a relatively young age.

by Anonymousreply 55July 21, 2025 6:41 PM

Should have read the signs:

[quote]The beaches on the southern side of things are known for rip tides — a powerful current that can pull in unsuspecting swimmers. The more main beaches do have signs with a warning, so keep an eye for that on the beach itself or the walkway on the beach. Watch for signs depicting a swimmer with a red circle and line through it and a warning "precaution corrientes" or "corrientes peligrosas". Or, you may just see a red flag posted on the shoreline. Either way, if you see these warning signs, spend your day on the sand, not in the water.

According to Phillips everyone on set knew Cosby was a horn dog. I've even heard rumors about Cosby and Phylicia Rashad.

by Anonymousreply 57July 21, 2025 6:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 58July 21, 2025 6:43 PM

WOW....How sad. I have a fear of drowning.. They say it's a very physically painful way to die.

by Anonymousreply 60July 21, 2025 6:46 PM

Shut the fuck up R55 you don't know what Malcolm knew or what Cosby revealed to his cast. You're doing a whole lot of assuming. Malcolm was a child when he first met Cosby. Stop trying to equate a child with Cosby's choice to violate women. The man just died. There's something seriously wrong with you.

by Anonymousreply 61July 21, 2025 6:47 PM

r60 Same. And the worst part is, it can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time.

by Anonymousreply 62July 21, 2025 6:47 PM

Death is like that, R62.

by Anonymousreply 63July 21, 2025 6:51 PM

I was but a wee tyke when I randomly walked pass the TV with the evening news on and saw the footage of mourning Cosby the day after his son was murdered. And now his TV son is dead as well.

by Anonymousreply 64July 21, 2025 6:51 PM

Could have been a medical issue while swimming - or riptide - or even a seaweed pile.

A friend of mine and his partner went to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate their anniversary - his partner went out for a swim, had a heart attack in the ocean and that was it. Dead.

I think he was early 40s.

Just awful to go on a vacation with another person or family and come home with one less.

by Anonymousreply 65July 21, 2025 6:51 PM

10:53 AM PT -- Warner died of asphyxia after he was caught by a high current in the ocean, according to ABC News. His body was reportedly found Sunday afternoon.

Fucking ocean. If the sharks don't get you the riptides will.

by Anonymousreply 66July 21, 2025 6:51 PM

r63 I was making a joke. You were supposed to reply with something like, "well, not to someone in the Sahara..."

R66 - yeah, I never swim in the ocean or lakes. I will wade in and dip my toes, but that's it.

The ocean is dangerous and too much fish shit everywhere.

I'll take my chances with the child peeing in the saltwater pool over the ocean any day of the week.

by Anonymousreply 69July 21, 2025 6:58 PM

R61 fuck off bitch. MJW was a teen when the show began, and the show ran for 8 years as the kids grew. I said it was sad he died. I’m not assuming anything. Just curious if at any point who knew what. Equate a child with Cosby choice to violate women sounds especially stupid on your part. You must be A one of Cosbys lawyers and, B definitely on the rag so go change your tampon you nut.

by Anonymousreply 70July 21, 2025 7:00 PM

Nooooo! Theo!!

by Anonymousreply 71July 21, 2025 7:08 PM

This is so awful and sad.

I met him very briefly circa 88/89 when he was touring for his book. He was probably having a bad day, but he was a total dick to his mother.

by Anonymousreply 72July 21, 2025 7:10 PM

does anyone in the business have a guess as to how much a Cosby cast member's yearly earnings might have decreased post Cosby scandal? Just a general idea

by Anonymousreply 73July 21, 2025 7:18 PM

Man, this is so sad.

by Anonymousreply 74July 21, 2025 7:21 PM

In the doc We Need To Talk About Bill Cosby, it was confirmed by people who worked on the show and a female guest star that Cosby would fuck women in his dressing room. Everybody on the set knew what was going on.

by Anonymousreply 75July 21, 2025 7:21 PM

The Cosby Curse continues!!

by Anonymousreply 76July 21, 2025 7:25 PM

I just saw this and audibly gasped. This really sucks...he's 2 years younger than me.

Really enjoyed his character on The Resident. Wow.

See???? Although I was born in Hawaii and grew up in Southern CA and practically LIVED at the beach swimming and boogie boarding, as an adult I found a NEW respect for the ocean. I thought I'd try out boogie boarding again up in Northern CA and it took me just ONE time in my late 30s to get caught in a massive rip tide and almost 20 minutes to fight to get back to the shore. This was after I had gone snorkeling in HI twice (and even swam with turtles).

That was it - never again. Between the sharks and the rip tides, NOPE. The ocean is not my home. Beautiful to look at, visit, dip toes or legs in, but that's it.

by Anonymousreply 143July 21, 2025 11:26 PM

I hope this didn't happen on the first day of vacation. It's so hard for everyone else to enjoy the rest of your holiday when this happens.

Ours was on CHRISTMAS. Had to cancel our flights and everything.

It just makes it awkward.

by Anonymousreply 144July 21, 2025 11:27 PM

Very sad and tragic. He was a talented actor. He was great on "The Resident" which I just binged on Netflix a few months ago.

He is a Grammy Winner for his collaboration with Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway on their version of Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America."

R143, no, I don't. And sadly, for a lot of people, sheer panic takes over and they just instinctively fight the current. But the lucky few who stay calm can escape.

R147. no, perpendicular, as in neither trying to fight the current nor letting it sweep you out into the ocean.

Have any of the Huxtables said anything or is the show just THAT toxic?

Lisa Bonet is high as balls but she will make a statement when she has achieved a zen state

by Anonymousreply 151July 21, 2025 11:55 PM

How do you think an elegant statement from Bill Cobsy would be taken these days?

by Anonymousreply 152July 21, 2025 11:58 PM

A doddering Bill Cosby's first comments about Warner's death:

[quote]"You could depend on Malcolm always going to uh the shelter, to learn his lines, to gather his character to come out and be ready. When the news came, it was shocking. And of course, my thoughts went straight to his mother, who worked so hard. She was so wonderful with him," Cosby told 6abc anchor Sharrie Williams.

by Anonymousreply 160July 22, 2025 1:02 AM

I understand it was the Cosby show that made Malcolm-Jamal Warner a household name and led to a long career. But it still feels unseemly, in my opinion, for Bill Cosby to be making any public comments about anything or anyone. He should be grateful not to have suffered worse consequences, not only for his behavior, but for the effect his behavior had on his fellow cast members, his family, and so on. It would be better if he just remained silent and out of the public eye altogether.

I suppose there’s a certain irony in my harsh attitude. I never gave the Cosby show much thought. But I adored I Spy; the Bill Cosby of THAT era was an early crush of mine.

My partner is originally from Costa Rica, and says most of the Caribbean coast of the country has dangerous currents and there are warning signs at all the beaches. None of them are appropriate for swimming, which surprised me because I've always associated the Caribbean with calm seas (e.g Cancun, Bahamas, etc) and the Pacific coast with bigger / more dangerous waves.

[quote]Why hasn’t there been a proper reunion special for this program.?

OMG you really don't know why?

by Anonymousreply 229July 22, 2025 11:20 PM

There was a 20th anniversary special, sans Lisa Bonet.

The show was event viewing back in the day, with 30 million people a week watching. It was number one for five seasons. It single handedly revived NBC, and (along with Cheers, Family Ties, Night Court and Hill Street Blues) created their successful Thursday night TV block which NBC dominated for twenty years.

No show pulls that kinds of ratings or influence anymore.

Would he have still been making money from The Cosby Show reruns/streaming? I've always been curious what the financial impact of the Cobsy fall from grace was for that cast.

I thought the early 90s with Friends and Seinfeld were the first shows where the cast got paid for reruns forever.

I'd imagine he probably got better deals for his later TV shows but they were no where near as successful as The Cosby Show.

by Anonymousreply 235July 23, 2025 2:37 AM

I think this was the whole contention of the actor's strike which crippled the industry a couple of years ago. Actors were compensated satisfactorily in syndication packages (of old shows), but once the show went streaming - they received next-to- nothing if anything at all. IIRC, they were paid a token flat-fee, and they wanted a higher fee with the new contract. I believe the agreement going forward was they'd get a much higher fee on future deals for new programs. The ones already streaming was not included in the new contract. Please correct me if I'm wrong. *And I believe this was a major contention with the writers' strike which happened right after.

by Anonymousreply 236July 23, 2025 2:49 AM

I think that was when TV stars began getting paid $1 million or more per episode, which was unheard of before the '90s.

by Anonymousreply 238July 23, 2025 3:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 240July 23, 2025 3:45 AM

[quote] How much do you think The Cosby kids made an episode? At just $30K they would have made over 4 million.

I would say maybe less. Nell Carter was making 30k an episode as the star of Gimme A Break! Mindy Cohn was making 40k by season 5.

by Anonymousreply 241July 23, 2025 6:33 AM

30K and 40K and episode back in the mid-80s for new TV stars was a lot of money. I'm sure veteran TV stars such as Bea Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan could demand much more than that.

by Anonymousreply 242July 23, 2025 11:42 AM

[quote]Warner worked quite consistently, but may have lost out on potential residuals had The Cosby Show run more continuously.

Beyond the Cosby issues, residuals decrease up to a point. After the show reruns 13 times, the actor will get about 5% of the original fee. The Cosby kids would have hit that a long time ago, even before Cosby's downfall.

[quote]How much do you think The Cosby kids made an episode? At just $30K they would have made over 4 million.

Cosby, himself, by the end made 4 million per episode. Phylicia would have been less but still more than the kids.

They were child actors. At that point in history, they probably made between 5-15K per episode. By the end, some of the kids, may have hit 20K.

Raven-Symoné made that per episode of "That's So Raven" but that was also her show and it was on Disney.

A lot of these people are older and/or don't do social much or at all.

Sabrina is almost 70. Phylicia is almost 80. (Although Cosby said they talked about it and grieved together.) Erika Alexander will probably do it on her (actually popular) podcast but she and Keisha don't really post much. Tempestt doesn't at all. Same with Lisa Bonet these days.

I'm sure they just reached out to his family directly. Not everyone is about a public statement.

by Anonymousreply 257July 24, 2025 12:58 PM

[quote]A lot of these people are older and/or don't do social much or at all.

They have paid publicists / interns / etc. who take care of this for them, no matter their age. It keeps them current.

Publicist meets he in her dressing room and asks, "Phylicia, can you share a few thoughts on the passing of Malcom-Jamal Warner? Remember him ? He played your son 'Theo' on 'The Cosby Show'. Just a few words we can put out as an official comment from you." Publicist hits 'record' on his Smartphone.

She takes a sip of Lemongrass tea, and ponders. She doesn't know what to say, as she hasn't spoken to him in decades. The publicist offers a few 'generic' ideas - he was a nice guy, she loved working with him, etc.

She smiles gently, and profoundly says, "He was a fine young actor. My memories of him will always be a blessing to me."

Perfect! Publicist then sends it off to the intern, who posts this on Phylicia's social media accounts. Done ! She made a statement. It's touching and beautiful.

If they create the post what benefit would it have then? If you want a heartfelt message, the publicist's statement is not what I want to read.

R260 Thanks for the advice, cupcake ! I don't follow her on social media.

R261 I know it's been said for years that older celebrities have a paid team of interns and publicists who control their social media and mainstream media when asked for statements (Streisand, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross come to mind) . I thought Rashad had an active social media.
