Cyndi Lauper
She's set to retire with a vast fortune. I give her a lot of credit. She really held in there and maintained a decent career all of these years, despite some rocky times. Plus, she's been a staunch advocate for the LGBT community. She seems like someone who's very down to earth and ordinary.
For what it's worth., her "What's Going on" is the next best thing to Marvin's version.

Her net worth is something like $50 million--not shabby at all but not overwhelming. She's hung on, definitely, and made her quirky talent last for the long game. Lately, she's been shilling Cosentyx for her psoriasis.
Her son is a little punk who got into some kind of trouble, and she bailed him out.

I've known her since her Blue Angel days.

She and Madge rose to fame at the same time. I always thought Cyndi was vastly more talented.

Her version of I Drove All Night is so good

Cyndi meant the world to me when I was young. Her music got me through a lot of really tough times and horrible things. She's a brilliant song writer and singer.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun will lift even the most depressed people out of that mood.

Cyndi was on Desert Island Discs a few months ago.
Great interview and musical selection; Debussy, The King and I, Louis Armstrong, Puccini, The Beatles, and many more.

You must be kidding. She butchered that song. Chaka Khan's is the best after Marvin.

Her quirky Christmas album is my all-time favorite. It's so eclectic! She really is one of the most talented people of her generation.

By the end of the 80s she was considered something of a has been novelty act (she also had a bizarre Pro Wrestling fangirl period that did nothing for her career) while Madonna was performing at the Oscars. Now Cyndi is considered an accomplished survivor and Madonna is . . . a pathetic freak.

That quirky talent is grounded in actually being a musician. She's more than a sound.

Never forgets her roots - Ozone Park, Queens. Not far from street where Bernie Peters grew-up.

She's fine, R1. I have affection for her, and she's a good singer/songwriter.

I've seen her live in concert a couple times and she always puts on a great show and her voice is quite amazing (although it's been over 10 years since I've seen her so I can't vouch for her current vocals)
Her voice and some of her 80s songs are novelty-ish but musically they're quite good (racially insensitive video notwithstanding)

I think she is more comparable to Debbie Harry than Madonna.
Harry and Lauper were great singers and very 1980's quirky, but calmed down in the 1990's, whereas Madonna is so out of touch with reality.

She's very talented, but I sat through a sound check with her once and she was a high-maintenance pain in the ass.

I wish she had done more comedy acting. She was sensational and hilarious as Ira's ex lover Marianne in Mad About You.

Great singers, R19? Lauper a little more so. I like them both. Let's be real, though.

A lot of her fortune comes from her work on "Kinky Boots" which not only won her a Tony but is performed all over the world. Money in the bank.

Oh God, her recording is so awful. No one should ever even attempt that song.

I saw here a few times in the 1980s, once in the 1990s. I just saw her last year and her singing voice live hasn't diminished at all. She is smart to retire before her voice starts to go as with most singers. You don't want to end up like Don Henley or Madonna.

R20 I doubt think you get a career like hers without taking sound check extremely seriously

Her "Hey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun)" for the "Too Wong Foo" soundtrack was cool too.

R28 - or her son got into drugs and the wrong crowd. It happens.
Cyndi's a feminist, LOOONG time gay rights activist, has always championed the little people and never flashed her tits or used sexuality to get ahead.
She has Grammys, Emmy for acting and a Tony.
She has done things her way and fought to do it. She's awesome.

Sally's Pigeons is a beautiful song. And her autobiography is so good. Goddamn she's a scrappy broad
