What is the gayest movie ever?

What I mean by that is, I don’t mean anything by that. You fill in your own meaning. For me personally, it doesn’t mean gay men as characters, it doesn’t mean the handsomest guys, it doesn’t mean written by or directed by gay men.

To me, it means the movie with the most magnetic appeal to gay men, the movie we simply love watching the most — you’re flipping the channel and find it, and flipping away feels like DIVORCE.

But you know what? Damn me — damn me to hell! You use any criteria you want, dear. The only thing I request is, no porn. I mean the “legitimate cinema.”

Here’s my choice, and you could see it coming from outside the solar system.

Movies with high levels of neuroticism.

by Anonymousreply 1July 20, 2025 4:10 AM

I think it depends what generation the person answering is from. That said as a young Gen Xer my answer is Steel Magnolias.

by Anonymousreply 2July 20, 2025 4:20 AM

For obvious reasons, movies like The Boys in the Band (the OG version) and Torch Song Trilogy come to mind.

"Auntie Mame"

by Anonymousreply 6July 20, 2025 4:33 AM

Steel Magnolias is definitely gay gay gay. But I've always been surprised by how many straight men have have seen it, I always just thought it ?Gen X moms passing a weepie down to their daughters so so many young girls still love the movie.

Suddenly Last Summer — cannibalism, lobotomies, Venus fly traps, Liz’s third-person journaling

by Anonymousreply 8July 20, 2025 4:38 AM

Everyone assumes fraus love Julia Roberts for Pretty Women which they do. The fairy tale of a billionaire taking you shopping on Rodeo is real. But so many love her for Steel Magnolias even more. I'm still shocked how many women visit LA and have Rodeo Drive at the top of their list to visit.

I have never understood why The Wizard of Oz especially appeals to gay men.

by Anonymousreply 40July 20, 2025 6:55 PM

I guess some gay men feel that their emotional/psychological essence is female.

Brokeback Mountain (2006)

Starship Troopers is 1997 and seems uber gay to me.

by Anonymousreply 46July 20, 2025 8:42 PM

Stranger by the Lake is about gays, and is super gay and is a good movie, 2013. Summer of 85 is Ozon, 2020, nostalgic story of gay youth. And a good movie. None of these are the "gayest movie ever" because they dont have the traction. Morocco (1930) and Queen Christina (1933) now have almost a century of traction. Morocco is super gay.

by Anonymousreply 47July 20, 2025 8:46 PM

Modern movies are terrified to be campy, or afraid to not try to appeal to everyone.

I thought Brokeback was borderline campy with the melodrama and awful wigs, but was too earnest to make my short list.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure is gayer!

Garbo Talks is also very gay.

by Anonymousreply 55July 20, 2025 9:18 PM

C'mon guys! Everyone knows the gayest movie ever is Top Gun.

For 21st century movies with the gayest sensibility, I'd go with this one and The Devil Wears Prada. Of course that's not counting movies with gay main characters and central plots like Moonlight and Brokeback Mountain.

Other than Judy Garland being the star (and I guess Minnelli as the director), what's the "gay" content of Meet Me In St. Louis? It's a family story, it's not campy, it was one of MGMs biggest hits of all time, suggesting it appealed to people across the board.

by Anonymousreply 65July 21, 2025 1:49 AM
