His latter gubernatorial years we’re increasingly more conservative as, in a last ditch effort to win the Republican nomination (in ‘76), he tried to make some inroads on the right-wing’s longtime antagonism towards him. His resignation from office in December 1973 was widely seen as an opening gambit to run for president. I recall talk about how his age - 68 - in ‘76 was going to be an obstacle, but waiting until his 70s was especially a non-starter. How times have changed.

In 1968 my politically minded big brother dragged my friend Joey and me to Stapleton International airport to see Nelson and Happy arrive. There was a crowd and Nelson was signing and shaking hands. I reached my hand up and he signed an R on my hand. We were getting jostled and Happy looked at Joey and said "Oh, you poor boy".
