Man Who Was Pulled Into M.R.I. Machine Has Died, Police Say

The man, who, without authorization, entered the room wearing a metal necklace during a scan, died a day after he was critically injured, the authorities said.

(Note this took place in Long Island. Any guesses as to the victim profile??)

A man who was critically injured on Wednesday after he entered an M.R.I. room on Long Island and was pulled into the machine by his chain necklace died the next day, the authorities said on Friday.

The man, who was 61, was wearing a “large metallic chain” around his neck when he entered the room at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, N.Y., at 4:34 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The man, whom the police did not name, did not have authorization to enter the room, the police said. Being pulled into the machine made him have a medical episode, they said, without offering additional details. He was taken to a hospital, where he died at 2:36 p.m. Thursday, the authorities said.

The Nassau County police said in a news release on Friday that the investigation into the episode was continuing. A spokesman for the department said that no other information was available.

Nassau Open MRI did not respond to a request for comment.

M.R.I. machines use magnets and radio frequency currents to produce detailed anatomical images. The magnetic force of an M.R.I. machine is strong enough to fling a wheelchair across a room, according to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. Patients are advised to remove jewelry and piercings before entering an M.R.I. machine, and people with some medical implants, particularly those containing iron, should not undergo M.R.I. scans, the institute said.

Injuries and deaths involving M.R.I. machines have occurred in the past. In 2001, a 6-year-old boy died when a metal oxygen tank was pulled into a machine while he was undergoing a scan.

A man died in India in 2018 when he entered an M.R.I. room while carrying an oxygen tank. In 2023, a nurse in California was crushed and needed surgery after she was pinned between an M.R.I. machine and a hospital bed that had been pulled toward the machine by the machine’s magnetic force.

Nassau Open MRI offers closed and open M.R.I. scans, according to its website. An open M.R.I. involves a machine that is open at the sides rather than a closed tube.

The magnetic force of an MRI machine is insanely powerful. It probably pulled him neck first across the room into the machine in just half a second with enough force to smash his head open.

by Anonymousreply 1July 19, 2025 11:49 AM

I bet that machine done jerked his head off!

by Anonymousreply 2July 19, 2025 11:52 AM

Also — the magnetic force is an MRI machine is an actual super-strength magnetic material. It is magnetic 24/7. There’s no turning it off.

by Anonymousreply 3July 19, 2025 11:59 AM

Was he one of those puppy play types who wears hardware store chain around his neck with a padlock on it? If so, good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 4July 19, 2025 12:01 PM

It would be ironic if he thought he’d be safe because it’s a pure gold chain, but it was actually gold leaf on cheaper metal and he didn’t know.

Much more likely he was just a combo of stupid, rule-flouting, and/or not of sound mind.

by Anonymousreply 5July 19, 2025 12:19 PM

A scene like this was in the latest Final Destination movie. How topical of him.

And also, how dumb.

I just had an MRI yesterday in a hospital. I was asked no less than 5 times during various points if I had any metal on my body. Then, before I could enter the room with the MRI machine, I had to stand in front of large metal detector until I was declared clear. So it’s shocking that someone could just stroll into an MRI room with a metal chain around their neck. It shouldn’t have happened.

by Anonymousreply 9July 19, 2025 4:00 PM

He probably just thought he could do what he wanted.

Guess again.

by Anonymousreply 10July 19, 2025 4:06 PM

no. not satisfied with this outcome. being ate by a shark? yes. falling/jumping into an active volcano? yes.

being yanked into a mri machine and crushed because i wore a sleazy gold chain?

no.

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2025 4:11 PM

Can they turn the magnet on and off? You would think they would have some sort of security measures around entering the room like R9 mentions.

Wasn't there a case where some asshole had his gun on him and it killed him in an MRI? I don't understand how that even happens - a gun - in a hospital? Probably Texas.

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2025 4:11 PM

[quote](Note this took place in Long Island. Any guesses as to the victim profile??)

One of those Arabs?

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2025 4:20 PM

[quote]Can they turn the magnet on and off?

See R3.

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2025 4:21 PM

Yeah it seems really careless on the facility’s part that he could just open the door and wander in there — and die a violent death. Serving the public, with an MRI room, you have to assume some % are mentally unwell or otherwise not compliant with directions, and you have to set up reasonable preventative measures.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2025 4:36 PM

r14 / r12 / r3 The magnetic force can be turned way down and, in extreme emergencies, disengaged - but that's likely to damage the machine, so the injured person would have to be extremely sexy/hot to justify that.

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2025 4:36 PM

OP "Any guesses as to the victim profile??"

I actually don't get what you're implying?

by Anonymousreply 17July 19, 2025 4:37 PM

R17, an Italian goombah.

Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 18July 19, 2025 4:53 PM

R18 - this is the only answer.

by Anonymousreply 19July 19, 2025 5:06 PM

So his necklace was cheap metal? Not real gold or silver?

by Anonymousreply 20July 19, 2025 5:10 PM

Did it have on of those phallic pepper charms?

by Anonymousreply 21July 19, 2025 5:11 PM

White trash .... garbage

by Anonymousreply 22July 19, 2025 5:24 PM

And yet

I bet it was cleaning staff or maintenance not really paying attention or with limited English.

by Anonymousreply 24July 19, 2025 5:40 PM

He was also wearing nipple rings and a penis piercing.

by Anonymousreply 25July 19, 2025 5:42 PM

[quote]Also — the magnetic force is an MRI machine is an actual super-strength magnetic material. It is magnetic 24/7. There’s no turning it off.

So how dangerous is it for the people assembling the machine, transporting it, and setting it up in the room?

by Anonymousreply 26July 19, 2025 5:43 PM

Oh my GAWWWWWD! It got Lenny! It got Lenny!

I just dropped him off to go pick up a meatball parm and get the Escalade Simonized, and now you're tellin' me his friggin' HEAD CAME OFF?

Don't start wit' me, Lawn Guyland! Do you know who my father is???

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2025 5:57 PM

The wife called her husband to help get off the table and he was wearing a 20 pound (!!) chain.

That is going to be one helluva law suit against the technician who brought him in to the room.

WTF goes around all day wearing a 20lb weightlifting chain around their neck? Stupid idiot deserved to die.

by Anonymousreply 29July 19, 2025 7:04 PM

Based on what I’m seeing on social media, you’re wrong about the “victim profile,” OP.

by Anonymousreply 30July 19, 2025 10:29 PM

r29 "Stupid idiot deserved to die. "

THAT'S worthy of deserving to DIE? Seek help.

by Anonymousreply 31July 19, 2025 10:32 PM

The victim's name is Keith McAllister. So many bigoted assholes in this thread but then again it is the DL.

by Anonymousreply 32July 19, 2025 10:38 PM

OP "Any guesses as to the victim profile??"

We've got guesses about yours, certainly.

by Anonymousreply 33July 19, 2025 10:48 PM

R32 I stereotyped him as a Long Island moron, and almost certainly white as friggin' Christmas.

?????? What the hey is this about, dude? Bigoted?

by Anonymousreply 37July 19, 2025 10:57 PM

Turns out he was Black and age 61 and went into the room because his wife called for him to help get her off the table. Honest enough mistake. There’s several articles online. Sadly this is mostly the fault of the staff. Non-professional patients can’t be expected to be aware of the risks or think about them in the moment. Staff should have cleared it and ensured that if he goes in the MRI room, he’s got to go thru metal removal first.

by Anonymousreply 38July 19, 2025 11:01 PM

[quote]The victim's name is Keith McAllister

by Anonymousreply 39July 19, 2025 11:08 PM

Definitely lawsuit

by Anonymousreply 40July 19, 2025 11:10 PM

I feel sorry for his wife not only for the loss of her husband but also the trauma of witnessing what was likely a gruesome death. In any case she will be a wealthy woman soon, FWIW.

by Anonymousreply 41July 20, 2025 12:14 AM

She's gonna be a rich woman soon

by Anonymousreply 42July 20, 2025 12:28 AM

Actually, guys. It was me. I did it. Sorry bout that.

by Anonymousreply 43July 20, 2025 12:35 AM

I’ve had several MRIs. I had to remove ALL metals, including my phone.

What was the wife doing with a phone while still on the MRI table?

If a staff person handed her the phone, couldn’t they have just as easily helped her off the table?

Who’d let someone wearing a 20lb chain anywhere near an MRI machine?

Some info is missing because none of this makes any sense.

by Anonymousreply 44July 20, 2025 2:33 AM

R44 Whaddya think you're better than me?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 45July 20, 2025 3:15 AM

I’ve had several more than several MRIs and I’m always on the phone.

I’m a business woman.

by Anonymousreply 46July 20, 2025 3:34 AM

I didn’t know the machines are always “on.” Couldn’t they set up a security gate like at an airport that will beep if staff or patients have any metal before they enter the room?

by Anonymousreply 47July 20, 2025 3:43 AM

They just had to beat the boy-in-meat-grinder story.

by Anonymousreply 48July 20, 2025 4:33 AM

He’s black.

by Anonymousreply 49July 20, 2025 4:37 AM

What does that have to do with anything?

by Anonymousreply 50July 20, 2025 6:33 AM

She didn’t call him on the phone. She yelled for him and the technician let him in.

The technician let him in the room.

by Anonymousreply 51July 20, 2025 9:57 AM

“Gabagool? OHH!” —his last words

by Anonymousreply 52July 20, 2025 10:10 AM

[quote]She yelled for him and the technician let him in. The technician let him in the room.

I'm pretty sure the technician assumed he wasn't wearing a 20lb weightlifting chain around his neck.

by Anonymousreply 53July 20, 2025 12:43 PM

r52 he was black.

by Anonymousreply 54July 20, 2025 12:46 PM

I assume a 20 pound chain is hard to miss.

And that MRI technicians require extensive training around appropriate screening of all people entering the MRI room.

by Anonymousreply 55July 20, 2025 1:19 PM

Wife is blaming MRI Tech who walked with gold-chained man into the room.

by Anonymousreply 56July 20, 2025 1:29 PM

Sounds like a terribly run facility. Hope the wife gets some money.

It's easy to say he should have known better, but most people don't have any idea how strong that magnet is. Even those who are aware that all metal needs to be removed by the patient (like this husband would have been since he was there with his wife,) might think it's only an issue once you're actually on the table and being scanned. The fact that someone in the same room can be impacted or that it's an issue before/after scan may not be obvious to many people.

by Anonymousreply 57July 20, 2025 2:30 PM

Was the wife a great big fat person? Did the tech need the husband’s help to hoist her off the table? Maybe the tech was so preoccupied with trying to save his back that he overlooked the husband’s massive neck chain when he led him into the room.

by Anonymousreply 58July 20, 2025 3:04 PM

Total Six Feet Under death.

by Anonymousreply 59July 20, 2025 4:19 PM

Picture this: an MRI machine, the president and then a dumpster.

by Anonymousreply 60July 20, 2025 4:28 PM

Open MRIs don't give an as accurate reading as when patient is on table.

by Anonymousreply 61July 20, 2025 4:30 PM

Knew of incident when Oxygen Tank was sucked into the gantry on a MRI. Patient survived.

by Anonymousreply 62July 20, 2025 4:34 PM

I love how OP makes the assumption the guy is Italian and when it's proven he isn't and people say he's black, people say, "Why does that matter?" Um read the thread.

by Anonymousreply 63July 20, 2025 4:39 PM

R63 You love that?

by Anonymousreply 64July 20, 2025 4:42 PM

R64 I was being sarcastic, Mr. Literal.

by Anonymousreply 65July 20, 2025 4:46 PM

[quote]I assume a 20 pound chain is hard to miss.

He was doomed the moment he set foot in the room, too late for the technician to notice it and stop him.

by Anonymousreply 66July 20, 2025 4:47 PM

I didn’t realize these stand alone, strip-mall MRI centers even existed….always thought you had to go to a hospital.

by Anonymousreply 67July 21, 2025 4:49 AM

R63 An older version of myself with a huge gold chain.
