I bet it's mostly teenage girls and young women doing this. A few years ago, it was the duck lips, then lesbians who look like Justin Bieber, then the non-binary trans mania, then being diagnosed with fake Tourette's Syndrome. I agree with the doctor at the end, that this is probably another TikTok trend.
I notice it all the time with service workers. I totally get not being bubbly or enthusiastic. But this phenomenon is real. I have plenty of grumpy anecdotes. It's evident that many companies have completely given up on any kind of service training whatsoever. I saw a reddit commenter posit that it feels like they're more used to watching a person on a video than interacting with one, and thus don't really have an instinct to be reactive. And thanks to their trite therapyspeak, your wish for society to continue on with some kind of decorum is now just a violation of 'boundaries'.
