I resubscribed to some service that the PBS station here sells. I figure that is better than nothing.
Are you going to donate money for PBS and NPR?

I donated to my local PBS station today.

Why? They peddle a constant stream of sad sack stories. It is depressing the hear that radio station.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 17, 2025 8:30 PM |
PBS, yes.
Not a fan of NPR.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 17, 2025 8:53 PM |
I already did for NPR. They can’t be infuriating, but I don’t want them to go away.. I love the voice of Ayesha Rascoe.
And wait wait don’t tell me of course
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 17, 2025 9:02 PM |
They CAN be infuriating.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 17, 2025 9:03 PM |
I really like “Here and Now” - especially Robin Young and Scott Tong.

Transparently using funding to punish political enemies - disgustingly corrupt but hardly surprising.

[quote] Transparently using funding to punish political enemies
The acknowledgement that PBS and NPR are political says it all.

Science Friday!!!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 17, 2025 9:23 PM |
I just donated another 150 bucks to NPR.

At least that’s a $150 that can’t be used for other mischief.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 17, 2025 9:29 PM |
Are you thinking about a specific activity that costs about that amount?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 17, 2025 9:32 PM |
Where I live, that would be more like $350.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 17, 2025 9:34 PM |
Love PBS. Don't care for NPR outside of Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 17, 2025 9:35 PM |
WNYC New York tells us donations go for programing costs, must pay BBC, NPR. PRX and others A few years ago New York Magazine revealed CEO Laura Walker was paid $700,000 a year and morning host, Brian Lehrer, $400,000. Donations dropped during next Beg-A-Thons.

Why don’t people like NPR? Is it too liberal?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 17, 2025 9:42 PM |
I can’t listen to them since they brought in a wave of vocal fry and upspeak.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 17, 2025 9:47 PM |
"CBS Sunday Morning" features praise the Left, which is fine. They're not asking viewers to pay for their one-sided opinion on every subject. It's a private company. How many weekly Conservative programs does NPR provide while expecting everyone to pay? NONE !!!

Only if they spend it to resurrect Thomas Magliozzi
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 17, 2025 9:52 PM |
Those small market PBS stations in Vermont and northern New York a lot money from Anglo Montreal.

NPR and PBS were once seen as American media at its best. But now, after decades of Fox News and right wing radio, we’ve become a mean, small-minded country and thoughtfulness, intelligence, and empathy are considered weak and suspicious. It’s been a long slow decline; Trump is working like a demon to hurry the collapse.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 17, 2025 10:04 PM |
^ NPR is Fox News for progressives.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 17, 2025 10:07 PM |
NPR got way too woke in 2020-22. “Ambition is Whiteness” level woke. But recently they have become more balanced.

Back when they actually were, I listened and watched a lot. Now they are like a caricature of “woke”. Good for them if that’s what they want to do, but you can’t expect taxpayer subsidy to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 17, 2025 10:18 PM |
I suspect that people, like I, will donate and that PBS and NPR will continue to exist. If true, it will support the premise , sadly, that neither should receive government funding .
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 17, 2025 10:22 PM |
I wouldn't say NPR became too liberal. More like too "woke" before that word became meaningless due to overuse by MAGA. Also, it's content can be ZZZ outside of a few programs.
PBS is different. No issues with it.

I used to watch The McLaughlin Group religiously when John McLaughlin was alive and the host. Is there anything like that still? It was the way opinion shows should be, with a mix of views from across the spectrum and all the commentators being equal. Could you imagine PBS doing a show platforming someone like Pat Buchanan now?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 17, 2025 10:34 PM |
I’ll give to my local public radio station. I already donate monthly. Not to NPR, which brought a lot of this backlash on itself. I can’t believe Katherine Maher still has a job.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 17, 2025 11:32 PM |
At least this will STFU the talk about "taxpayer money" blah blah. Of course, NPR will be "under George Soros" or some other nonsense.

GBH here in Boston has enough resources to survive this.
Most city based stations will have a much better chance of weathering this. It's the smaller rural stations that are fucked.
On the bright side, GBH could bring back the old auction. It generated a lot of good will and raised a ton of money.

I loved McLaughlin too. Eleanor Clift, Jack Germond and Mort Kondracke were my favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 19, 2025 12:52 AM |
I give to Wikipedia and Open Library because I am there All The Time.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 19, 2025 4:50 AM |
I'd rather give to Wikipedia, the AP, and Planned Parenthood.
Oh, and a local charity for elderly homos.
