Emma Watson BANNED from Driving for 6 Months
Until 2026, Emma Watson might have to opt for public transport. The Harry Potter star has had her driving license revoked for six months, following a speeding incident. The decision was handed down Wednesday by High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court. And that's not all: the actor also received a hefty fine of £1,044, or about $1,399. Watson was driving 38 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone.
Strangely enough, the woman once known as Hermione Granger was not the only member of the original Harry Potter cast to have trouble with highway codes on Wednesday. Zoë Wanamaker, who played Quidditch teacher Madame Hooch, was convicted in the same court on the same day for a similar offense. The 76-year-old actor was driving at 46 miles her hour when the speed limit was 40 miles her hour.
Wanamaker’s lawyer, Duncan Jones, said that the actor was not asking for any "special treatment" from the court, and fully accepted her penalty. Like Watson, Wanamaker already had nine points on her license before the offense. According to the BBC, Judge Arvind Sharma deducted three points from each of the two women, resulting in an automatic six-month suspension of their licenses.
Apart from this legal mishap, Watson is keeping a low profile.

At least she wasn’t drink driving.

Wait - losing one's license and a $1,400 fine for going 8mph over the limit? Seems Draconian.

I see what you did there, R2.

Imagine living in a country where the police and courts fill their days with prosecuting light speeders.

Isn’t there a massive crime problem in the UK? Yet the police and courts are all over this minor infraction in days?

She wasn't banned from driving because she went a little over the limit one time. It's because she was caught speeding on multiple occasions. Something even a skim of the article makes clear.

r2 r4 r5 r6 are retarded.

Yes, we read the article. The “speeding” in question is still single-digits over the limit. So what if she went six over on five separate occasions? Most of us drive that fast every time we get in the car.
This is worth the court’s valuable time? They have nothing more urgent to address?
What a tight ass, dull little country on that befridged island.

Yet, Britney Spears has been caught speeding several times while driving without a license (or suspended license) and/or no registration, no seat belt on...and LET GO (to even continue driving away from the traffic spot).
Yes, I know it's two different countries, but I think I'd feel a lot safer driving in the UK with strict safety laws than in LA with the likes of Spears driving around without any real consequences and being a repeat offender.

r9 It's more than 25% over the speed limit. And you don't know what what the other infractions were. Perhaps it's a third strike rule.

Then the article is badly skewed by not having reported the entire context of the event.

She had nine points on her licence ffs. She's a serial offender. She should have been banned for longer.

Speeding is sooooo cool y’all!

38 mph in a 30 zone. Such speed! What WILL we do with the roads.
Apparently these people have never driven in LA; good luck Brits - apparently you have nothing better to do.

That's actually a crazy coincidence. Her husband, the actor Gawn Grainger* died exactly two months ago today, at age 87. So there might be something going on there. I hope she gets better, I loved her in the Bergerac reboot earlier this year, acting opposite the beautiful Damien Molony.
*Emma Watson played Hermione Granger in Harry Potter! This goes so deep, you guys, almost feels cosmically fated. Maybe the notorious 2016 dimensional fork has been healed with this?

Wasn’t London trying to set something up where you couldn’t drive after a certain time? They were trying to cut down on congestion. It sounded like the Soviet Union. Everyone is under surveillance constantly. Police call you up over re-Tweets to see if you’re “thinking correctly.” It’s creepy.

Uh-huh. Gods forbid we try to limit congestion in the capital, make it more pedestrian and bike friendly, AND save people's lungs in the process. 🙄
You sound like you've just woken up from a coma you fell into during the Red Scare. Most Americans aren't as dumb as you, thankfully.

And of course the ancient MAGA idiot at r18 is also THAT poster, responsible for a third of all DL threads whom we often bitch about on DL's subreddit.

Hahah R3, I honestly did NOT see what I did there, but I do now! I'm not really a Harry Potter fan and have only seen the first film in the series, but now I get it.

I wouldn't want to live somewhere where you can get a ticket for going 8 over. I don't know what her other driving offenses were but that sounds oppressive.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 18, 2025 4:23 PM

It depends on the speed limit. 8mph over on the motorway (freeway) is very unlikely to get a ticket or stopped. 8mph in a 30 absolutely you will. 30mph is normally because there are footpaths (sidewalks) or through a village. It’s not unreasonable. Americans can be so blinkered sometimes.

Ah yes. America famously doesn't have crosswalks, sidewalks or small towns. Get fucked, r27.

R29 you’re the ones going on and on… and on about how going 8mph over 30mph is no big deal. Also, stay pressed nutcase.
