What is the best pop song ever made?

I know, it's nearly impossible.

But if you HAD TO pick one song, as the best pop song ever made. What would it be?

I'm torn between "Gangnam Style" by PSY and "We Found Love" by Rihanna.

But if forced to choose, it would be "Gangnam Style."

"We Found Love" felt a bit forced, at times. The lyrics were also too sappy for that age.

Gangnam Style had it all. Youthful vigor, angst, humor, romance, music, interesting lyrics, a villain you love and hate, and a compelling video with a satisfying ending.

THAT’S what you came up with after decades of pop music?

by Anonymousreply 1July 17, 2025 12:33 AM

“SOS” by ABBA is possibly the most perfect pop song ever recorded.

Op your choices are dark sided.

Personally? Love would never do without you by Janet Jackson

by Anonymousreply 3July 17, 2025 12:41 AM

Even though I despise her now.

Stand Back- Stevie Nicks.

by Anonymousreply 4July 17, 2025 12:41 AM

Your definition of "ever" seems quite limited.

by Anonymousreply 5July 17, 2025 12:42 AM

Different Drum - Linda Ronstadt and Stone Poneys. It’s the perfect chord progression, vocal, and length.

by Anonymousreply 6July 17, 2025 12:43 AM

There is only one legitimate answer.

by Anonymousreply 12July 17, 2025 12:50 AM

Gangnam Style? OP, you're nuts.

There is no "best" as far as pop music goes. There are just too many great songs to choose from.

Listen to this one again:

Martha & The Vandellas "Dancing in the Streets"

I Want it That Way

by Anonymousreply 15July 17, 2025 12:53 AM

The Bangles' "If She Knew What She Wants": shimmery, summery, catchy, just the right length.

R20 I assume you're a Brit, it's not fluffy like a pop song but it crushes.

Seriously.

Dancing Queen by ABBA

by Anonymousreply 27July 17, 2025 1:39 AM

R6 I love everything about that song, but I wish it were longer. It is so pleasant on the ears that I never want it to end. It's one I will play over and over until I'm "satisfied."

The Girl and the Robot by Röyksopp feat. Robyn.

I know it's not typical DL fare, but give it a chance. It's perfectly crafted.

If I had to pick one and only one - Modern English: I Melt with You

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2025 2:07 AM

Yes, We Have No Bananas

by Anonymousreply 31July 17, 2025 2:13 AM

R29 nice. I’d nominate Hang With Me for dance-pop Robyn perfection.

Perfection in pop hits by decade:

1960s, Be My Baby (Ronettes)

1970s, Dancing Queen (ABBA)

1980s, Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Tears for Fears)

1990s, I Want It That Way (Backstreet Boys)

2000s, Hips Don’t Lie (Shakira)

2010s, Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)

2020s… tbd but Espresso is a contender

“Dreaming”, by Blondie is one of my favourites.

R33, Dreaming is a funny one. Such a gorgeous pop song, and then they recorded and mixed it with the drummer overplaying so frantically!!! and LOUDLY!!! on every line.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2025 2:56 AM

I mean just listen to the isolated drum track. He must have had a LOT of coffee or the late-70s drug equivalent.

I like Dark Horse by Katy Perry, even though I don't like her. Her music sucks but I love that song.

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2025 3:07 AM

Oh Baby, Baby by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Here, There, and Everywhere by the Beatles Something by the Beatles Day After Day by Badfinger

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2025 3:14 AM

"Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" by Gerry and the Pacemakers

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2025 3:40 AM

Well, the song would have to come from the Queen of Pop, of course, along with the greatest pop music video ever.

R21 that's a great candidate

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2025 3:49 AM

Dreaming (Blondie) is wonderous, and features backing vocals by Lorna Luft and Ellie Greenwich, making this some kind of magical gay opus.

but the GOAT is Be My Baby.

by Anonymousreply 41July 17, 2025 3:51 AM

Logical Song Supertramp

by Anonymousreply 42July 17, 2025 5:16 AM

These come to mind:

I Second That Emotion

God Only Knows, Wouldn’t it Be Nice, or Good Vibrations (not even much of a Beach Boys fan, but these are perfect songs)

Everybody’s Talking

Not a fan of Madonna, but True Blue

This Old Heart of Mine, Isley Brothers

by Anonymousreply 46July 17, 2025 5:42 AM

Take On Me - A-ha

No contest.

Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.

by Anonymousreply 48July 17, 2025 3:41 PM

Guys, come on, get real. The greatest pop song is Gangham Style and the greatest movie - of all time - is Breakfast Club. There's no argument.
