Julia Roberts, America's Sweetheart and last legitimate movie star before social media, will collect her second Oscar this March.
I have not watched trailer yet- But this is one of 10 films next year that SOUND so good to me-- The Spike Lee /Denzel film sounds epic, as 3-4 others- There was some article at Goldderby about early Oscar possibilities and I looked all of them up- they sound fanastic. I will try to link later.
2 of them both have that chick from The Bear in them - This is one of them-

I am sorry but that trailer was EPIC. Cannot wait for this one. It was giving TAR/Promising Young Woman vibes.
That being said, I am not seeing one moment in that trailer getting Julia a nomination- like not even close.

I think it looks great but I cannot stand her. Did anyone notice she did the maniacal laugh like she does when Richard Gere slams the jewelry box in Pretty Woman? I only remember the original scene because of the film The Sweetest Thing making fun of it.

A true movie star doing awards season is just what Hollywood needs right now. The movie looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 19, 2025 6:24 AM |
I worked on a film, as production, with Julia years ago ...she's fucking awesome, but not to everyone... I saw her admonish a whole group of fraus, who were pushing through little kids to get to her. She stopped and looked at these Women and said "What are you doing, pushing kids to get my autograph?" and then refused to sign the Fraus DVD's. Hahah...from then on she was known in the town we shot as "A Bitch" . But, I actually saw her sign a Hook DVD for this lil girl who came up to her. This new movie looks great and the best role she's gad in awhile. Plus, her and Chloe Sevigny in scenes together is cool.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 19, 2025 11:48 AM |
Some of you SOUND like EPICALLY hyperbolic about how like GREAT this movie looks based on a SHITTY trailer. Well at least theres Sevigny.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 19, 2025 12:18 PM |
Her scenes in the trailer with Sevigny do look cool. It's two different film world styles and looked very authentic. A case where a quirkier acting type helps the more traditional "movie" style look more grounded in reality.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 19, 2025 9:51 PM |
Maybe the movie will be good and maybe it won't but it's certainly out of date. The entire idea that a college would come screeching to a halt in the wake of a black woman's rape accusation is laughably out of style. Trump runs academia now - ask Harvard and Yale and Columbia who calls the shots.

I own a little shop in San Francisco. An older customer told me she talked to her at a shop in Pac Heights and said she was nice as could be. Maybe she's chilled out in her old age. I drive by her old house in Presidio Heights and if I had the money, I'd NEVER leave that area. It's like a movie it's so beautiful. Heard she quietly bought a spot in Pacific Heights after she sold it. Not that Pac Heights is the 'hood or anything...

R7 makes a great point about the hyena laugh; she should have retired that after Pretty Woman or at least only "use it" for comedies.
This looks a touch "woke" but I will definitely watch it. Julia, like Winona, has an onscreen presence I almost always enjoy--warts and all.

Every studio almost demands that stupid laugh in any movie she is in because they think it's how the public identifies with her. I think it's ridiculous too. Her best performances after PW are when she stops it. Like Closer and AOC.

R20 that's just something you can't buy or teach. I can't tell whether she just knows how to do it or if it's just the camera loving her. PJ Hogan said as much the first day of shooting MBFW. Said once the camera is on there's nothing you have to do. She just rolls.

I think I may have told this story on DL a few years ago, but let me do it again. My partner and I shared an elevator with her at a NYC hotel some 10 years ago. At first, I didn't even notice it was her since there were a couple of burly bodyguards working hard to block our view of her. One of them was getting ready to probably ask us to leave the elevator when she told him to step back and leave us alone. When we were leaving the elevator she even said bye. In comparison, the previous day, John Benjamin Hickey, a genuine C-lister, who was also staying there, couldn't have been more of an asshole and acting like a true diva.
I was actually surprised how short Julia is in real life; I had always thought she was taller, based on what I saw in the movies.

R63 I never said she was a s big as them, that’s were you’re mistaken. The bitch is a movie star. She’s the only Friends cast member to become one. She even starred in like 2 Oscars bait films in which she was considered for nominations. She is a movie star all day long. She is also a tv star. It’s rare but she is one of those people. I don’t get how this is a debate. Hell, I would also say Jon Hamm is a movie star.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 29, 2025 11:15 PM |
R58, I genuinely like Aniston, but I’m sorry… she’s NOT a movie star!
Movie stars are no longer a “thing”, however, they once were, & traditionally, Aniston was never considered a movie star.
Her ex, Brad Pitt was once a movie star, and still is, (sort of) however, she was NOT.
You have to be nominated to possibly win an Oscar, or actually win one, to be considered a movie star, or you have to be Tom Cruise, who should have won an Oscar LONG ago for his acting abilities alone, yet inexplicably, hasn’t.
That’s all there is to it.
She’s beautiful, popular, & beloved by all frauen, but she’s not a movie star.
What’s wrong with that?
She’s made WAAAY more money than MANY movie stars!
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 29, 2025 11:17 PM |
From 1997 to 2011 Jennifer Aniston made 75 million dollars from films alone. You cunts are incredulous. That is a movie star. I ain’t say the bitch was the biggest movie star of all time. She not even bigger than Halle Berry but her movies gross more.

I think movie stars are people who you go and pay to watch at a movie theatre because they’re just SOOOO FUCKING AMAZING, you just know they’ll deliver, no matter what, or because they’re so fucking AWESOME, no matter what they act in, that even if they phone it in, they’re THAT GOOD.
Leonardo Di Caprio is an excellent example, of what I reference.
C’mon, now!
You bitches are gonna tell me Aniston is on that level?
She’s not.
Julia Roberts is one of the ONLY women who currently come close.

R68 That’s your fkin opinion. Most people would call her a movie star. If Jennifer Aniston never did Friends. Hell let’s just say Friends never existed, and she had the same filmography from Picture Perfect to present she would be considered a soft A list movie star. How is that wrong? Yall are letting the astronomical success of Friends make you dumb.
Hell I met some newly adult Gen Zers that like her comedies that didn’t even realize that was the same mafuckin person.

Why?
Because somehow, we love the guy & support him, & because he starred in some of THE MOST ICONIC films of our lifetime!
There’s an example of a REAL movie star who might not be that traditionally talented as an actor, but can carry of fucking series, just because he’s got “IT”.
You guys have no fucking idea what makes a fucking movie star.
Aniston is widely beloved, however, she’s not a movie star.

Sarah Jessica Parker never led a single film that made more than $100 million.
Julia and Sandra were the headliners in several. Each. They are A-listers. Sarah Jessica Parker was never anywhere near their orbit and isn’t fit to wash their bras.
She’s not even a TV star anymore and she was never a movie star. She’s a laughing stock.
Your post is a fucking bigger joke than “And Just Like That.” Only even less funny. If that’s possible.

R76, I think SJP could have had an AMAZING comedy/film career, had she steered away from playing Carrie.
She can be VERY funny, but that’s all gone now, as we will never view her as anyone other than Carrie Bradshaw.
No hate!
She made her money & I firmly believe she made the correct choice, however, she’s now pigeon-holed, & there’s no coming out of that, unless she can somehow hit it out of the park on Broadway, which I doubt is possible.

Oh you sweet things. No Jennifer TV Manniston is not, has never been and will never be a movie star. Same for Sharon Stone which is just laughable. The woman had one hit movie with a bigger star and had to show her pussy to be in it. R80 is correct. Meg Ryan is a female movie star adjacent. But she always required an equally or more famous male star to sell. She couldn't do it on her own. She was not in the Roberts or even Bullock league.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 30, 2025 3:42 AM |
The reviews for Roberts have been mostly respectful but there ain’t no way she’s getting an Oscar nomination now. The film got absolutely roasted by the critics who pretty much all say she ends up being defeated by the weakness of the script,. She’ll probably get a Golden Globe nom simply because she’s Julia Roberts and the way the categories for Best Actress are split up between Drama and Musical or Comedy.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 30, 2025 3:56 AM |

I could see Julia getting an Oscar nomination simply because there are no stars anymore. Same with Emma Stone, who also got good reviews.
The "Jennifer Aniston is a movie star" stan is very amusing. This woman's whole claim to fame is as a star of the series "Friends," and to a lesser extent, the series, "The Morning Show." Netflix pays her a lot for streaming films with Adam Sandler but they would never put those in theatres. She's TV only, and cannot carry a film like a Julia, Sandra or Meryl.

You must be scoring the best shit in town to be this out of your mind. Or you’re that hideous SJP.
Both Sharon Stone and Meg Ryan were movie stars, the former with an Oscar nomination. SJP is a witch-faced hag from cable television who just fell on her hatchet face trying the revive a 30-year-old relic of a show and no one cared. She’s beyond over. And she was never a movie star. Not even for a weekend.
[quote] SJP Is bigger than Sandra Bullock today, who only does the occasional Netflix movie now.
Sandra Bullock is still A-list at 60 and can work whenever she feels like it. SJP can’t even carry a streaming show based on old, successful IP. She even played second fiddle in a sad “Hocus Pocus” sequel that went straight to Disney +. That’s not A-list, darling. That’s embarrassing.

The only actor who looks at home here is Chloë Sevigny as Kim, the resident Yale Philosophy Department psychotherapist, who struts through the movie in a series of baggy suits and a curly bowl haircut that wouldn’t be out of place on the Beverly Hillbillies’ Miss Jane Hathaway.

Roberts, usually a vibrant presence at the very least, looks trapped and perpetually pained: one minute she’s clutching her stomach, the next she’s furrowing her brow as she struggles to figure out the motivations of those around her. This is what you’d call a serious role, but it’s not a challenging or meaty one. Why cast Julia Roberts only to sap all the life out of her?
by Anonymous | reply 110 | August 30, 2025 9:53 PM |
Julia is going to be ignored like Angelina Jolie was for Maria.

I don't understand the link to Tar when the Blanchett character was a predator however brilliant. This character is calculated in not taking a position despite herself but not a predator.

I think the links are academia and #MeToo.

At the Friday news conference, one female journalist even asked Roberts whether releasing the film could be regarded as a setback for feminism.
The Oscar-winning star leveled her gaze on the woman. “I realize we’re here on a clock,” she said, “but when you say ‘undermines the feminist movement,’ can you give me just a little morsel of in what way do you see that?”
The journalist explained that after the press screening, she and her colleague debated whether the film might revive old arguments about whether women’s accusations of sexual assault should be believed.
“Not to be disagreeable, because it’s not in my nature,” cracked Roberts, “but I would say the thing you just said that I love is that it revives old arguments.”
“There’s a lot of old arguments that get rejuvenated in this movie,” and “that does create conversation,” she continued. “The best part of your question is how you all came out of the theater talking about it. That’s how we want it to feel.”
by Anonymous | reply 119 | August 31, 2025 10:16 PM |
In other words, Julia doesn’t have a good answer as to why the film revives old tropes.

Julia is giving me Veronica Lake vibes as a blonde!

Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Goop are MOVIE STARS. Anniston is a tv star.

I love that Julia Roberts was unprepared to answer a basic question, and so she cunted off to the interviewer in a way that made the e interviewer seem stupid.
Total A List star move there.
Lauren Bacall would have done the same thing to teach her a lesson!

Poor Chloe Sevigny. Saddled with two bad wigs for two years straight (the other one was for Feud). Oh wait. She’s a cunt and the hair department are probably sabotaging her. Never mind!

R115 continued. That wall of photographers that Julia had to face at the Venice premiere looks terrifying. I love the hand gesture she does at the end to say Enough.

[quote] Nicole Kidman
Has barely headlined a hit movie on her own during her entire 36-year career, has an endless string of box-office flops and currently appears almost exclusively in nonstop streaming projects.
She is indeed a TV star, not a movie star. And under the risible, narcissistic delusion that she’s 31 years old.

Julia Roberts - Much to do about nothing.
No Talent

Nicole Kidman's hit movies include To Die For, Moulin Rouge, Eyes Wide Shut, The Hours (Oscar!), Malice, The Stepford Wives, Billy Bathgate, Far and Away, Practical Magic, Days of Thunder, Nine, Cold Mountain and Dead Calm.
Myrna Loy never headlined a movie by herself. Was she not a movie star?

R143 Almost all flops. What a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 4, 2025 2:05 AM |

I'm no fan of Nicole but she did have an impressive resume for a while back then. Even more than Julia, much less Aniston.

[quote] Which were the flops
Almost all of those.
The Stepford Wives, Billy Bathgate, Far and Away: flops.
She can’t carry a film and never could. She’s an ice cold screen presence and audiences do not like her. She’s had nothing but box office failures for more than a decade and it’s remarkable anyone hires her.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | September 4, 2025 2:47 PM |
WHET Loren Dean who played the eponymous Billy Bathgate?

R150 yea but they were blockbusters that still flopped for what they costed to make. Meanwhile Aniston pulled in 30 million viewers a week. You hating ass hos will put some respect on Jennifer Aniston’s name. If she wasn’t a movie star then how the fuck do we have a “Let’s be a Jennifer Aniston film” thread with nearly 600 comments. The SJP Troll is, indeed, SJP. After her latest career embarrassment she’s trying to convince the public she was once a movie star.

It’s interesting that none of these broads are very good. Cate and Nicole may be talented but so cold. Julia and Sandra are glorified tv actresses. At best.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 5, 2025 12:25 AM |
Meryl is the best of all time but she was never close to the movie star Julia Roberts was in our lifetime. She knows it too. Remember when August Osage County was first announced it was touted with line "the world's most famous actress and the world's best actress" finally in movie together.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | September 5, 2025 5:26 AM |
I’m a big Jennifer Aniston fan, but she is not a movie star. Tv star, definitely. However, she’s every bit an A-list celebrity as movie stars like Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Demi Moore, or Sharon Stone.

R124 I'd argue that she didn't make the journalist seem stupid, but rather herself. She may have seemed smart if she were able to include why rehashing old arguments is useful, but based on the info provided that definitely was not the case. All she did was basically say, "oh yeah, well that's what I wanted", which comes across as someone who feels corned giving a knee-jerk, juvenile response.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | September 5, 2025 3:41 PM |
R158 I think Meryl became what Julia became in her 60s. During the mid aughts there started to be this Meryl craze, where everything she touched was a box office success as well as critically acclaimed.
