Remember Madonna’s British accent?
Between junior and senior year in high school, one of my classmates spent two weeks in the UK. He came back speaking with a British accent. We were from Tennessee and a fake British accent overlaying a hillbilly accent was atrocious, and we all knew it.
That was probably the worst accent ever. Until Madonna. Or possibly Julia Roberts in STEEL MAGNOLIAS.

Scotland here.
A girl I knew in school spent the summer holidays with relatives in London. When she came back she had a London accent and she kept it up until she left school. I suppose it was a way to get noticed, but everybody thought she was an idiot.

I think Madonna's accent was more an affected "I'm refined, unimaginably wise and sophisticated" one than trying to sound British. Although, she did live in the UK and had the British husband for a while, so I imagine some of that could have rubbed off on her.

I heard Goop talking about Apple as a child on some tv show. She said Apple would put on her British accent while in the US, and switch to her California accent while in the UK. She was an attention-seeking brat early on.

I agree with r3. It wasn't a British accent, just an affected manner of speaking that people aren't used to coming from celebs who aren't as old as dirt, but especially not from slutty pop stars.

R3 and R5 - 100%. She had that affected manner/accent when being interviewed on the set of Desperately Seeking Susan (I'm too lazy to find the clip). She uses it when she's being "official" to give weight to whatever the hell she's saying.
She attempted NY accent(s) during her True Blue phase as well...maybe gearing up for Who's That Girl movie.

I taught junior high school (briefly) in the '90s.
The history teacher on my team had an almost cartoonishly plummy English accent. It just didn't sound right to me, but I was 22 years old and had never left the country, so what did I know?
Finally, at a regular team meeting I asked him, "Gerry, how long have you been in the States?"
The math teacher , who had no patience for him at all shouted, "He's from fucking Pittsburgh. He spent a semester in Essex when we were in college and came back Maggie Smith."
I shan't forget it.
