“A Different Story” (1978) starring Perry King and Meg Foster.
The modern gay rights movement was still young and so Hollywood thoughtfully gifted us with a film about a gay guy and a lesbian - who fall in love with one another.
Yes, sexuality is fluid, etc. but there were so few gay characters then and this is what we got.
I like how Foster comes in on King having an affair - with a woman. Because once you go straight, you’re a regular p****y hound!

Terrible movie, but Perry at his hottest.

King was beautiful. Didn’t he also play gay in “The Ritz”?

What was the reaction to this at the time? Straight people probably loved it.

Wasn’t Meg fired from Cagney and Lacey because they were afraid viewers would think Cagney was a lesbian? So they got Sharon who was more feminine.

No one saw it. It was no Making Love.

Wasn’t “”Making Love” a huge flop too?

My mother loved that movie. Probably wishing I could go the way of the pussy like Perry.

I think it was the first 'gay' movie I ever saw. I was maybe 13. It came on TV very very late at night. I was fascinated by Perry King but remember being very disappointed that the guy and the girl ended up together. He's not gay he just has not met the right girl yet. I have never seen it again

R2 King was in the TV miniseries “The Man Who Lived at The Ritz,” which is the story of American painter Philip Weber, who lives at the Hôtel Ritz Paris during the German Occupation, and his friendships with notables such as Hermann Göring and Coco Chanel.
The gay bathhouse farce, “The Ritz,” had Stephen Collins on Broadway, Treat Williams in the film version and Casey Donovan in the Broadway revival.

Ah? Always a backlash to a movement.
This movie would have come out not long before “Soap” started backtracking on Jody and made him bi, then totally straight.
The episode where Jody says he’s dating a woman and his father celebrates and the audience cheers is pretty gross.

I just remember thinking “what a waste of frosting” during Meg’s topless love scene involving Perry and the birthday cake. 🎬 🎂

I hated this crap. It was on HBO enough that I could relate to George C. Scott’s reaction to watching his runaway daughter in a porno film loop from ‘Hardcore’. “Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!!”

Perry King….Yum! Loved him and Joe Penny on Riptide. King was in an episode of Will & Grace. He played a man who, if memory serves, may or may not have been Jack’s father.

What about Perry scarfing birthday cake frosting from Meg’s teats? I found this somewhat startling.

Poor Perry. He was in the cusp of being a major star but his 70s blond beach looks didn't work in the 1980s as darker, anti-heroes became the leads. He had a tv show for a while with Joe Penny that did okay, but after that he got relegated to being, as he says, "the husband in the Lifetime movie who gets shot in the second act.."
He is, by the way, a nice guy. Likes young women and motorcycles. Not gay at all. And, the grandson of Maxwell Perkins

I've long assumed The Choirboys had put a stop to true stardom. Not that I've heard or read anything aside from some strongly negative reviews. I liked him in Riptide. Didn't he show up on Will&Grace?

He should be in the Datalounge Hall of Fame for the campy "Mandingo".

DL icon Susie Sarandon was originally attached to this project, but she eventually had to accept other jobs when its start date kept changing.
