Sarah Palin walked out on stage at the Minnesota RNC, opened her mouth and began speaking. My affiliation with the Republican party ended. Right there, I was not voting Republican. McCain wanted his old friend Joe Lieberman on the ticket. McCain really wanted to run as a nonpartisan uniter. His advisors warned against it because Lieberman was a Democrat and it would turn off many conservative/Tea Party voters.

McCain looked at Mitt Romney, but the two men did not like each other and were really hostile to each other on the debate stage. The advisors thought the Democrats would have a field day with it.

Mike Huckabee, who had come in second, was too much an evangelical conservative and culture warrior for McCain's brand of Republicanism. The same with Rick Santorum.

McCain thought Newt Gingrich was full of himself and talked too much.

Others like Ron Paul, Fred Dalton Thompson, and Rudy Giuliani had lackluster campaigns that went nowhere.

So, Sarah Palin was really all that was left to pick. She was a young, attractive, and charismatic female governor whereas Obama was a young, attractive, and charismatic black senator. Palin also represented the evolving Tea Party revolution. At the time, they did not know just how bad it was going to be.
