and finding it hard to keep track of all the dull, affectless characters. I used to adore this book.
I'm rereading Less Than Zero

Have you read American Psycho?

r1, no, but I have seen the disturbing movie.

Read The Shards. It's the long, boring companion piece to his first shitty effort.

Just read The Secret History instead.

r3, long and boring, sign me up!

The book sucks. The movie is so much better. It's not a popular opinion but I'm too old to care.

R6 I love the movie. I've seen it hundreds of times and hate that it's not on streaming. Classic 80's youthful ennui.

R6 and r7 I have found my people!

I had such a hard-on for Hap in the movie

R4 I LOVE The Secret History!

R1 the movie isn't disturbing compared to the book. In the book there's a part where he induces rats to chew through a honkers stomach, killing her.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 16, 2025 1:47 AM |
Honkers, new boy? Do better.
That said, I love Less that Zero. But I've never read the book. Hell, I didn't even know there was one.
And I loved The Secret History. I read it when it was brand spankin' new. But sadly, nothing else she wrote ever measured up to it.

Sorry -- Less Than Zero.

R12 sorry, autocorrect changed HOOKERS to Honkers and I didn't catch it..

I ADORED Jami Gertz as Blair. Loved the club scenes, it was SO like my real life. And now that bitch Jami is worth $8 BILLION (good for her!)

I like Bret Easton Ellis on film more than his actual books. I find his writing is trying too hard to be shocking and dark. I also liked the movie adaptation of "The Rules of Attraction", as it was very similar to my college life at the time.

And you're surprised? Ellis’s books are one-note, filled with narcissists and narcissist-adjacent characters. I like the movie, though.

The Shards is FANTASTIC. The REAL Less Than Zero!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 16, 2025 2:17 AM |
He’s a shitty, overrated “writer”.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 16, 2025 2:23 AM |
He was a serious closet case when he wrote Less Than Zero and he's a screaming queen now. Thus, The Shards.
