I'm rereading Less Than Zero

and finding it hard to keep track of all the dull, affectless characters. I used to adore this book.

Have you read American Psycho?

by Anonymousreply 1July 16, 2025 12:26 AM

r1, no, but I have seen the disturbing movie.

by Anonymousreply 2July 16, 2025 12:26 AM

Read The Shards. It's the long, boring companion piece to his first shitty effort.

by Anonymousreply 3July 16, 2025 12:27 AM

Just read The Secret History instead.

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2025 12:30 AM

r3, long and boring, sign me up!

by Anonymousreply 5July 16, 2025 12:47 AM

The book sucks. The movie is so much better. It's not a popular opinion but I'm too old to care.

by Anonymousreply 6July 16, 2025 1:06 AM

R6 I love the movie. I've seen it hundreds of times and hate that it's not on streaming. Classic 80's youthful ennui.

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2025 1:29 AM

R6 and r7 I have found my people!

“It only looks like the good life”

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2025 1:33 AM

I had such a hard-on for Hap in the movie

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2025 1:41 AM

R4 I LOVE The Secret History!

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2025 1:43 AM

R1 the movie isn't disturbing compared to the book. In the book there's a part where he induces rats to chew through a honkers stomach, killing her.

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2025 1:47 AM

Honkers, new boy? Do better.

That said, I love Less that Zero. But I've never read the book. Hell, I didn't even know there was one.

And I loved The Secret History. I read it when it was brand spankin' new. But sadly, nothing else she wrote ever measured up to it.

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2025 1:53 AM

Sorry -- Less Than Zero.

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2025 1:54 AM

R12 sorry, autocorrect changed HOOKERS to Honkers and I didn't catch it..

by Anonymousreply 14July 16, 2025 1:55 AM

I ADORED Jami Gertz as Blair. Loved the club scenes, it was SO like my real life. And now that bitch Jami is worth $8 BILLION (good for her!)

by Anonymousreply 15July 16, 2025 2:03 AM

I like Bret Easton Ellis on film more than his actual books. I find his writing is trying too hard to be shocking and dark. I also liked the movie adaptation of "The Rules of Attraction", as it was very similar to my college life at the time.

by Anonymousreply 16July 16, 2025 2:06 AM

And you're surprised? Ellis’s books are one-note, filled with narcissists and narcissist-adjacent characters. I like the movie, though.

by Anonymousreply 17July 16, 2025 2:17 AM

The Shards is FANTASTIC. The REAL Less Than Zero!

by Anonymousreply 18July 16, 2025 2:17 AM

He’s a shitty, overrated “writer”.

by Anonymousreply 19July 16, 2025 2:23 AM

He was a serious closet case when he wrote Less Than Zero and he's a screaming queen now. Thus, The Shards.
