I rewatched Moonstruck last night

And it still holds up as the perfect hang out at home movie. Makes me want to go live in that neighborhood with loud Italians and eat at the Grand Ticino. At some angles in this film, Nic Cage was beautiful. All the actors were perfect.

by Anonymousreply 56July 16, 2025 12:18 PM

Some of the actors in it were even Italian!

by Anonymousreply 1July 15, 2025 3:27 PM

My parents had the same stereo (hi-fi) in a blonder wood finish.

by Anonymousreply 2July 15, 2025 3:27 PM

It's probably the only wholesome film about NY Italians ever made. No mention of the Mafia. Nobody gets shot. No piano wire.

I love this movie so much. My favorite scene is when the single tear drop falls from Loretta's eye, while watching La Boheme at the Met. I think of Moonstruck every time I sit by the Fountain in Lincoln Center.

by Anonymousreply 3July 15, 2025 3:28 PM

[quote]At some angles in this film, Nic Cage was beautiful.

That's the part that shocked me the most when I saw it for the first time about a decade ago. Although I'd call it sexy more than beautiful.

R3 Never saw Marty (1955)?

Won Best Picture, Best Actor (Ernest Borgnine), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay.

by Anonymousreply 5July 15, 2025 3:34 PM

Julie Bavasso! She steals her scenes as well in The Verdict and in SNF.

She train in experimental theater.. she and her husband were part of the NY avant-garde.

by Anonymousreply 6July 15, 2025 3:35 PM

Danny Aiello is the only weak link. He's the only one who comes off like he's ACTING.

by Anonymousreply 7July 15, 2025 3:35 PM

R5, Yes, I like Marty, but Moonstruck is ALL ABOUT being Italian in NYC. That is the underlying theme.

It wouldn't work any other way.

by Anonymousreply 8July 15, 2025 3:37 PM

Marty is no different in that point. Just acknowledge there’s an earlier classic about NY Italians. It’s not hard.

by Anonymousreply 9July 15, 2025 3:39 PM

"Makes me want to go live in that neighborhood with loud Italians and eat at the Grand Ticino."

Except that those loud Italians have been gentrified out of the neighborhood and replaced by obnoxious hedge fund managers and investment bankers, their cunt wives and their demon seed spawn.

by Anonymousreply 10July 15, 2025 3:40 PM

The old man and his dogs were cute.

by Anonymousreply 11July 15, 2025 3:41 PM

I’m the token white person

by Anonymousreply 12July 15, 2025 3:42 PM

Sorry R9, Moonstruck is better than Marty. Marty is sad and depressing. Moonstruck is about LIVING.

by Anonymousreply 13July 15, 2025 3:44 PM

Die on that Moonstruck hill. The greatest movie of all time!

by Anonymousreply 14July 15, 2025 3:46 PM

They all looked unwashed.

by Anonymousreply 15July 15, 2025 3:46 PM

[quote]Some of the actors in it were even Italian!

I still remember an old stand up bit from Mario Cantone: "Cher in Moonstruck. She didn't even look Italian, she looked fucking Lebanese or something."

by Anonymousreply 16July 15, 2025 3:46 PM

[quote] Marty is sad and depressing.

Only if you're a moron.

by Anonymousreply 17July 15, 2025 3:46 PM

[quote]Julie Bavasso! She steals her scenes as well in The Verdict and in SNF.

She was such an absolutely wonderful actress, a shame she died so relatively young.

by Anonymousreply 18July 15, 2025 3:49 PM

"Old man, ya give those dogs another bite of my food, I'm gonna kick you til ya dead!"

by Anonymousreply 19July 15, 2025 3:49 PM

[quote]Except that those loud Italians have been gentrified out of the neighborhood and replaced by obnoxious hedge fund managers and investment bankers, their cunt wives and their demon seed spawn.

The Moonstruck house was recently on the market for $14 million. NY is insane now.

Cher does look stunning after the makeover

by Anonymousreply 21July 15, 2025 3:50 PM

Just fucking die r12. Just fucking eat shit and die.

by Anonymousreply 22July 15, 2025 3:51 PM

R17, can you PLEASE JUST START A FUCKING MARTY THREAD AND BUZZ OFF???

by Anonymousreply 23July 15, 2025 3:51 PM

R23 I only made two comments in this thread--another person joined me in making Marty comments.

by Anonymousreply 24July 15, 2025 3:55 PM

Marty's a wolf without a foot!

by Anonymousreply 25July 15, 2025 3:55 PM

R22 it was a mock post. Not a literal post. Jeezus

by Anonymousreply 26July 15, 2025 3:56 PM

Thank you to the assholes who ruined this thread.

What the fuck is wrong with you people?

by Anonymousreply 27July 15, 2025 3:58 PM

You lost the crowd with “Makes me want to go live in that neighborhood with loud Italians.”

It’s not an Italian neighborhood, and cheap ethnic stereotypes are frowned upon here.

by Anonymousreply 28July 15, 2025 4:02 PM

Brooklyn Heights has never been dominated by one ethnic group, as far as I know.

by Anonymousreply 29July 15, 2025 4:10 PM

Well, R28, not being from NY I would not know that but it seemed Italian in the movie and Italian-American families are joyfully loud in my limited experience.

by Anonymousreply 30July 15, 2025 4:57 PM

[quote]and Italian-American families are joyfully loud in my limited experience.

Good lord. What decade are you living in? Many Italian-American families are totally assimilated and indistinguishable from other white ethnic groups these days.

by Anonymousreply 31July 15, 2025 5:30 PM

Julie Bovasso was up for the mother role but she sure made every second of screen time as the Aunt count. I believe she also coached Cher. I didn't realize she died a few years later at 61.

by Anonymousreply 32July 15, 2025 5:31 PM

Is that the show with Gerbil Shepherd and Loose Willis?

I hated that, they talked to the tv but they ignored me when I talked back!!! RUDE.

by Anonymousreply 33July 15, 2025 5:43 PM

Julie was Chers' voice coach.

by Anonymousreply 34July 15, 2025 5:50 PM

[quote]Brooklyn Heights has never been dominated by one ethnic group, as far as I know.

But they did have the only documented case of identical cousins.

by Anonymousreply 35July 15, 2025 5:52 PM

Gage was striking and sexy when young. Did you not get the memo?

by Anonymousreply 36July 15, 2025 5:54 PM

Whenever any asks me what my favorite movie is, I immediately say Moonstruck. It was an incredible script, perfectly cast, edited and directed. And unlike a lot of movies, it stands the test of time.

by Anonymousreply 37July 15, 2025 6:03 PM

Needs a 4K re-release. Although I hate that fake moon they used.

by Anonymousreply 38July 15, 2025 6:20 PM

I can’t take Nicholas Cage.

by Anonymousreply 39July 15, 2025 6:51 PM

Shanley hasn't written anything worthwhile since.

by Anonymousreply 40July 15, 2025 6:55 PM

I certainly wasn’t a fan of this…

by Anonymousreply 41July 15, 2025 6:56 PM

I think Chef was at her most beautiful dolled up for the opera. Absolutely gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 42July 15, 2025 6:57 PM

It would make a lovely small musical -- the song cues are practically written in already! Apparently, people have tried to produce it for the stage, but alas.

by Anonymousreply 43July 15, 2025 7:06 PM

R43. Idina Menzel was hoping to get a musical Moonstruck produced but it never happened. But somehow Redwood ended up on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 44July 15, 2025 7:11 PM

[quote]I can’t take Nicholas Cage.

NICOLAS, not Nicholas.

by Anonymousreply 45July 15, 2025 7:19 PM

Snap out of it, OP!

by Anonymousreply 46July 15, 2025 7:19 PM

R40 you’re wrong, without a doubt.

by Anonymousreply 47July 15, 2025 7:22 PM

Marty is a far better more realistic movie.

by Anonymousreply 48July 15, 2025 7:46 PM

[quote] and Italian-American families are joyfully loud in my limited experience.

[quote] Good lord. What decade are you living in? Many Italian-American families are totally assimilated and indistinguishable from other white ethnic groups these days.

But before they were totally assimilated they were loud? What you're saying is even worse.

by Anonymousreply 49July 16, 2025 12:54 AM

[quote]I think Chef was at her most beautiful dolled up for the opera.

Who??

by Anonymousreply 50July 16, 2025 6:20 AM

Che!

by Anonymousreply 51July 16, 2025 6:51 AM

Look! It's Cosmo's moon!

by Anonymousreply 52July 16, 2025 7:53 AM

r49 you make no sense

by Anonymousreply 53July 16, 2025 9:38 AM

There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense on this thread. Moonstruck is not a hill to die on

by Anonymousreply 54July 16, 2025 9:42 AM

I might be America's sole Nada Despotovich fan. "Smithereens" used to play on HBO a lot when I was a kid, and I found her and her name fascinating.

Luckily, she still shows up in stuff on occasion so I can say "Oh look, it's Nada Despotovich."

by Anonymousreply 55July 16, 2025 12:16 PM

Duly noted?
