The Superhero Era (2008-2025) is officially over
And SuperMan killed it. Its decline started around 4 years ago but now Hollywood must realize it’s time to hang up the cape. Our feel like our culture has finally worn tired of it. Apparently SuperMan will flop in addition to be a god awful film.
Thank You SuperMan 2025.

It is not over but it is in serious trouble.
The films are hitting a ceiling.
These are the domestic (orange) and international (pink) grosses for the last two Avengers films.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 4 | July 13, 2025 2:35 PM

Sorry, pink is total worldwide gross, not international gross.
Domestic gross now comprises half of worldwide gross; previously it was doing one third or one fourth of worldwide gross.
The international audience is abandoning the movies.

At the same time, the movies are becoming more expensive to make. Superman was outrageously expensive and unlike Man of Steel was did not have its budget covered by product placement.
Superman performed terribly in China and other important territories.
There is an important reason for this.
Traditionally, overseas box office is driven heavily by movie stars. That’s why Jurassic World Rebirth and F1 are doing well overseas.
The new crop of films haven’t included bankable movie stars (Harrison Ford is a legacy star.) Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh and David Corenswet cannot open films. Scarlett Johansson and Brad Pitt can.
That is why the DCU is done. The only other completed film, Supergirl, stars Milly Alcock and Matthias Schoenerts. It’s DOA.
I suspect this will be proven when Fantastic Four does well overseas. Pedro Pascal is a genuine star. Look at how The Last of Us collapsed when they killed him off.

Why did they even replace him. Henry Cavill is still young. Though it is dumb to have non American Superman. I do not like this actor. There is a smugness about him. But also I’m sensing something fucked up about him that that would make Armie Hammer blush. My 6th sense is never off.

“Superman is a hit so it doesn’t work for your thesis.”
But it is not a big enough hit to justify its cost. It also does not have the benefit of a robust physical media market to buoy its profitability like Man of Steel.

I’ve had Superhero fatigue for awhile, but I enjoyed this one. I liked the casting of Lois Lane. Amy Adams and Kate Bosworth were terrible previous choices. I loved Henry Cavill as Superman and still feel he was done dirty. I was skeptical about casting David Corenswet, but I think he was a great Superman and I ended up liking him even better than Cavill. It’s a fun comic book film. Krypto needs a 6 episode streaming series, ala Benji with super powers.

R27 the film has an A- Cinemascore from viewers. It has an 82% on RT from critics and 93% from watchers.
No one is all over the internet shitting on it. There are some people shitting on it but FAR from the majority.
Please get a real education. Do yourself a favor. Not the pretend Columbia degree you don’t really have.

So $210 million worldwide and the movie cost $225 million to make.
I mean that’s 93% of its production budget.
I’m not understanding how that’s bad?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 13, 2025 4:08 PM

r30 Presumably there's a marketing budget to add to that $225 million figure.
I've honestly never understood why some movies are considered bombs even after they've recouped both their production and marketing costs. I guess if it doesn't make the studio an additional $100 million on top of that, it's a flop?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 13, 2025 4:12 PM
|
Jesus Christ
A) the production budget doesn’t include P& A
B) the studio only takes home 50% of domestic gross and around 35-45% international gross (25% in China)
The break even point for a $225 million film is over $500 million worldwide. Superman has likely already grossed the lions share of its worldwide box office and will do around $400 million worldwide.

R26 why do people I don’t know sort of weaponize the whole “Op made 1/2 or 1/3 of the comments” on threads with a 100+ comments or recently created ones building up. Wouldn’t you expect an Op to engage in his/her own thread. Make it make sense.

Despite OP comparing it to other DC films (most of which left a bad taste in people’s mouths), its actually outperforming any Superman movie globally.
Superman has never been huge outside of the USA. He’s an American figure. His motto was “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”.
It was now changed to “Truth, Justice, and the Human Way” to appeal to others around the world more.

Superman isn’t that popular that’s why all the movies over the last 20 years have struggled and if I’m not mistaken, all the movies after the first 2 Supermans in the 70s were box office bombs too.
Superman is not Batman who has much higher expectations.
So I don’t see this as a failure at all.

Batman V Superman made $874 million, non inflation adjusted.

R41 I was going to say I believe the first Superman and also Cavill’s first take were obvious hits from the very onset. I find it hard to believe this film will surpass the them even not adjusting for inflation. It simply is not going to make those numbers.

R36 yes you are a mistaken. Cavill’s films were successful just less so than the other caped crusaders of its era. Any film that surpasses 500 mil is hugely successful. These films are expensive but they ain’t that expensive , they don’t cost 400 mil to make. They cost usually caps around 200 mil. The only true bomb was Superman Returns which I actually liked.

I watched James Gunn's Superman and it was so, so bad. (And I'm generally a fan of his work). I went home and watched Richard Donner's first Superman and it was magical. I'd forgotten - or I think I'd never realized, because I was so young when I saw it - how wonderful and sweeping and yet charming and fairy-tale it is. The difference in film making couldn't have been more stark.
The same comparison holds when listening to the two scores. John Murphy and David Fleming's score couldn't be more bland and generic, and of course John William's score is iconic and amazing

Just saw “Superman” tonight. It’s a gorgeous film, the music is perfect (unlike Ron Howard’s hit-you-over-the-head indicating soundtracks -yech) and the cast was just fine.
I didn’t know the actor who played Superman, which was great because it helped with suspension of disbelief. He was very believable.. The actor’s ability to go from being an otherworldly being, with superpowers as well as human powers to then go to the scene with his dad on the front porch where he is near breaking down was just moving enough- unlike…ahem….other directors…..it didn’t reach out and grab you by the tear ducts.
But that’s how really well made movies make you cry!
Nicholas Hoult (sp?) is turning out to be a very good actor.
But don’t forget the dog!
I thought the final credit bit was genius, because it answered, with no words, the question that I bet 75% of the audience really wanted answered.
