The Superhero Era (2008-2025) is officially over

And SuperMan killed it. Its decline started around 4 years ago but now Hollywood must realize it’s time to hang up the cape. Our feel like our culture has finally worn tired of it. Apparently SuperMan will flop in addition to be a god awful film.

Thank You SuperMan 2025.

OP, what is your first language?

by Anonymousreply 1July 13, 2025 2:23 PM

Superman got good reviews and is opening pretty well, actually.

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2025 2:26 PM

R2 Fuck off. I’m writing the narrative here.

Why can’t we have regular good ol action flicks without some cunt in tights.

Fuck Marvel too.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2025 2:32 PM

It is not over but it is in serious trouble.

The films are hitting a ceiling.

These are the domestic (orange) and international (pink) grosses for the last two Avengers films.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2025 2:35 PM

Sorry, pink is total worldwide gross, not international gross.

Domestic gross now comprises half of worldwide gross; previously it was doing one third or one fourth of worldwide gross.

The international audience is abandoning the movies.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2025 2:39 PM

OP has as little a grasp of movies as he does of the English language.

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2025 2:42 PM

In addition to being* a god awful film. 😞

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2025 2:43 PM

At the same time, the movies are becoming more expensive to make. Superman was outrageously expensive and unlike Man of Steel was did not have its budget covered by product placement.

Superman performed terribly in China and other important territories.

There is an important reason for this.

Traditionally, overseas box office is driven heavily by movie stars. That’s why Jurassic World Rebirth and F1 are doing well overseas.

The new crop of films haven’t included bankable movie stars (Harrison Ford is a legacy star.) Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh and David Corenswet cannot open films. Scarlett Johansson and Brad Pitt can.

That is why the DCU is done. The only other completed film, Supergirl, stars Milly Alcock and Matthias Schoenerts. It’s DOA.

I suspect this will be proven when Fantastic Four does well overseas. Pedro Pascal is a genuine star. Look at how The Last of Us collapsed when they killed him off.

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2025 2:50 PM

Superman is a hit so it doesn’t work for your thesis.

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2025 2:53 PM

We have a "hates Superman" troll, now? DL being the DL.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2025 2:56 PM

We don't need these movies any more. We got a real-life superhero who fights for us in the White House! Thank you President Trump, and thank God for you!

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2025 3:01 PM

Why did they even replace him. Henry Cavill is still young. Though it is dumb to have non American Superman. I do not like this actor. There is a smugness about him. But also I’m sensing something fucked up about him that that would make Armie Hammer blush. My 6th sense is never off.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2025 3:03 PM

R11 Plurabelle? Hmm, sounds Spanish.

Were both your parents born in America. I’m trying to end birthright citizenship for even those already born.

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2025 3:05 PM

[quote] We have a "hates Superman" troll, now?

That is de facto true.

by Anonymousreply 14July 13, 2025 3:05 PM

R14 Please don’t try it. Please seek therapy. Yes bitch I’m the OP.

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2025 3:06 PM

This is a “Columbia Grad”, everyone lmaooooooo

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2025 3:06 PM

Eldergays did any of you actually watch it in real time like when it aired. What was the watercolor talk that week like?

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2025 3:07 PM

smfh my last comment was for the fucking Rosie thread at r17. I swear the webpages jumps when on mobile.

by Anonymousreply 18July 13, 2025 3:08 PM

“Superman is a hit so it doesn’t work for your thesis.”

But it is not a big enough hit to justify its cost. It also does not have the benefit of a robust physical media market to buoy its profitability like Man of Steel.

by Anonymousreply 19July 13, 2025 3:10 PM

[quote] But also I’m sensing something fucked up about him that that would make Armie Hammer blush. My 6th sense is never off.

It’s merely because he looks like Armie Hammer.

Oh Armie. Why did you have to eat all those girls.

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2025 3:13 PM

R20 He doesn’t look anything like Armie to me. 🤷‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2025 3:14 PM

I’ve had Superhero fatigue for awhile, but I enjoyed this one. I liked the casting of Lois Lane. Amy Adams and Kate Bosworth were terrible previous choices. I loved Henry Cavill as Superman and still feel he was done dirty. I was skeptical about casting David Corenswet, but I think he was a great Superman and I ended up liking him even better than Cavill. It’s a fun comic book film. Krypto needs a 6 episode streaming series, ala Benji with super powers.

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2025 3:19 PM

This is what will kill the DCU.

It’s bombing in China. The Flash, for comparison, did $25 million US in China; Aquaman did close to $300 million US.

Don't confuse teafake r24. She has stated her boundaries and does not want to think about the facts.

by Anonymousreply 25July 13, 2025 3:32 PM

Wait, the poster who is the OP and has commented more than half this thread is also the one who claimed to be a Columbia alum?

He exposed himself without meaning too. This thread displays how uneducated he is (the film has been open for 2 days) and how aggressive and mentally unstable he is. Columbia would never put up with it.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2025 3:32 PM

R25 Why trigger non binaries? lol. Hell, my friend told me it was terrible and I’ve being seeing threads on here about how this film was going to flop big time. But it appears I am mistaken because it will be a financial success. Don’t blame me. Blame all the liars who made the threads.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2025 3:34 PM

R26 When did I ever claim to be a Columbia alum?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2025 3:36 PM

R27 the film has an A- Cinemascore from viewers. It has an 82% on RT from critics and 93% from watchers.

No one is all over the internet shitting on it. There are some people shitting on it but FAR from the majority.

Please get a real education. Do yourself a favor. Not the pretend Columbia degree you don’t really have.

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2025 3:46 PM

So $210 million worldwide and the movie cost $225 million to make.

I mean that’s 93% of its production budget.

I’m not understanding how that’s bad?

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2025 4:08 PM

r30 Presumably there's a marketing budget to add to that $225 million figure.

I've honestly never understood why some movies are considered bombs even after they've recouped both their production and marketing costs. I guess if it doesn't make the studio an additional $100 million on top of that, it's a flop?

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2025 4:12 PM

Jesus Christ

A) the production budget doesn’t include P& A

B) the studio only takes home 50% of domestic gross and around 35-45% international gross (25% in China)

The break even point for a $225 million film is over $500 million worldwide. Superman has likely already grossed the lions share of its worldwide box office and will do around $400 million worldwide.

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2025 4:16 PM

R26 why do people I don’t know sort of weaponize the whole “Op made 1/2 or 1/3 of the comments” on threads with a 100+ comments or recently created ones building up. Wouldn’t you expect an Op to engage in his/her own thread. Make it make sense.

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2025 4:21 PM

Despite OP comparing it to other DC films (most of which left a bad taste in people’s mouths), its actually outperforming any Superman movie globally.

Superman has never been huge outside of the USA. He’s an American figure. His motto was “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”.

It was now changed to “Truth, Justice, and the Human Way” to appeal to others around the world more.

Conservatives are pissed about the change Gunn made

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2025 4:39 PM

Superman isn’t that popular that’s why all the movies over the last 20 years have struggled and if I’m not mistaken, all the movies after the first 2 Supermans in the 70s were box office bombs too.

Superman is not Batman who has much higher expectations.

So I don’t see this as a failure at all.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2025 4:44 PM

The propaganda conservatives have to try and sink movies by attacking them as “woke” is crazy and exposes their agenda.

It’s how they make money by creating rage bait.

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2025 4:45 PM

R37 That’s not my gripe. I just hate them with few exceptions and they dominate the industry which then affects which kind of films get made overall.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2025 5:00 PM

It’s not going to be a billion dollar movie but James Gunn and Superman films never ever were.

There’s still a chance for this to be the highest grossing Superman movie of all time so that’s a win.

by Anonymousreply 39July 13, 2025 5:05 PM

Batman V Superman made $874 million, non inflation adjusted.

This will make less than half of that.

Why do people lie?

by Anonymousreply 41July 13, 2025 5:07 PM

R41 I was going to say I believe the first Superman and also Cavill’s first take were obvious hits from the very onset. I find it hard to believe this film will surpass the them even not adjusting for inflation. It simply is not going to make those numbers.

by Anonymousreply 42July 13, 2025 5:11 PM

R36 yes you are a mistaken. Cavill’s films were successful just less so than the other caped crusaders of its era. Any film that surpasses 500 mil is hugely successful. These films are expensive but they ain’t that expensive , they don’t cost 400 mil to make. They cost usually caps around 200 mil. The only true bomb was Superman Returns which I actually liked.

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2025 5:19 PM

I watched James Gunn's Superman and it was so, so bad. (And I'm generally a fan of his work). I went home and watched Richard Donner's first Superman and it was magical. I'd forgotten - or I think I'd never realized, because I was so young when I saw it - how wonderful and sweeping and yet charming and fairy-tale it is. The difference in film making couldn't have been more stark.

The same comparison holds when listening to the two scores. John Murphy and David Fleming's score couldn't be more bland and generic, and of course John William's score is iconic and amazing

by Anonymousreply 44July 13, 2025 5:22 PM

OP, have you ever washed your hands after pooping, even once?

by Anonymousreply 45July 13, 2025 5:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 50July 14, 2025 1:37 AM

R50 No big dummy, you just have become obsessed with that idiot so you have internalized and over applied meaning to all the shit the Defcato idiot dislikes as well as his general interests. So any fucking coincidence of someone disliking or liking the same shit as him, has made your mentally ill brain conclude that said poster must be defacto.

If you had ANY brain that was somewhat intelligent with critically thinking skills, you would rationalize that the topics we are discussing like fucking Superhero films are too big and broad and mainstream and thus opinions will overlap as coincidences from widely different posters and personality types. You know like the fact like that one might not like apple pie independent of social class or politics.

by Anonymousreply 51July 14, 2025 2:08 AM

The problem with Superhero movies is the studio always thinks they know better than the original material.

by Anonymousreply 52July 14, 2025 2:12 AM

Just saw “Superman” tonight. It’s a gorgeous film, the music is perfect (unlike Ron Howard’s hit-you-over-the-head indicating soundtracks -yech) and the cast was just fine.

I didn’t know the actor who played Superman, which was great because it helped with suspension of disbelief. He was very believable.. The actor’s ability to go from being an otherworldly being, with superpowers as well as human powers to then go to the scene with his dad on the front porch where he is near breaking down was just moving enough- unlike…ahem….other directors…..it didn’t reach out and grab you by the tear ducts.

But that’s how really well made movies make you cry!

Nicholas Hoult (sp?) is turning out to be a very good actor.

But don’t forget the dog!

I thought the final credit bit was genius, because it answered, with no words, the question that I bet 75% of the audience really wanted answered.

by Anonymousreply 53July 14, 2025 2:40 AM

Does Nicholas Hoult stay in touch with his mentor Bryan Singer?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 54July 14, 2025 2:52 AM

Bryan Singer wanted Hoult to be Superman!!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2025 2:57 AM

Hoult is not squared jaw enough even though he is really good looking. Superman has to have that classic masculine square jaw to me. He must.

I’d love a Smallville reboot. I’m sick of Marvel and superheroes in cinema but that was a good show.

by Anonymousreply 56July 14, 2025 3:00 AM

If the film wasn't shot in Technicolor, we aren't entering a movie theater to see it.

by Anonymousreply 57July 14, 2025 3:03 AM

[quote] Does Nicholas Hoult stay in touch with his mentor Bryan Singer?

Too old.

by Anonymousreply 58July 14, 2025 3:13 AM

I haven't seen a single superhero movie since The Dark Knight Rises, and I had to be dragged to that one.

Avengers? Iron Man? Wandavision? No fuckin' idea what those are.

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2025 3:17 AM

It's not godawful. It's actually well-made and entertaining. Fuck the woke shit.

by Anonymousreply 60July 14, 2025 3:50 AM

So Teafake didn’t see the movie, has no intention of seeing it, but felt entitled to make this proclamation? And made a new, separate thread, because he can’t abide joining a previously established Superman post? Geez.

by Anonymousreply 61July 14, 2025 4:10 AM

Yep I did all that. You gon be aite. You’ll sleep tonight.

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2025 4:21 AM

Which directors grab you by the tear ducts? Synder?

Which was???
