Barbra Streisand’s Lowest-Charting Album in Decades

For decades, Barbra Streisand could almost always be counted on to reach the top 10 whenever she delivered a new album. Streisand still claims the second-most No. 1 titles on the Billboard 200 among women, with 11, coming in behind only Taylor Swift’s 14 rulers. While she remains a powerhouse and a legend, the era of guaranteed commercial grandeur may be over.

Streisand’s new album The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume II reaches several Billboard rankings after its first full tracking frame – but it fails to approach the top 10 on the main list of the biggest albums in the country.

The Secret of Life debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 31 in its first full week of availability in the United States. The collaborations project, which features tunes that pair Streisand with stars like Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey and Bob Dylan, moved just under 20,000 equivalent units, according to Luminate. Almost all of those were pure sales, as it racked up a little more than 18,300 purchases.

While The Secret of Life underperforms on the Billboard 200, the set does open at No. 4 on the Top Album Sales chart. It becomes the EGOT winner’s sixteenth title to land inside the highest tier on the ranking. Throughout her career, Streisand has collected 26 placements on the Top Album Sales list and 65 on the Billboard 200.

She's utterly irrelevant. I didn't even know she was still alivew.

by Anonymousreply 1July 12, 2025 11:12 PM

See, Barbra? Time to STOP, and stop embarrassing yourself and your legacy.

by Anonymousreply 2July 12, 2025 11:15 PM

R1 And here at the DL, we all say the same about you. Coincidence?

by Anonymousreply 3July 12, 2025 11:16 PM

So long, Gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 4July 12, 2025 11:17 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 5July 12, 2025 11:19 PM

So we're supposed to be impressed you're still alive, OP? Eeew.

by Anonymousreply 6July 12, 2025 11:21 PM

R6 Whoever said or implied that ?

by Anonymousreply 7July 12, 2025 11:31 PM

She'll be fine. Her music and her life. She should just retire in peace.

by Anonymousreply 8July 12, 2025 11:33 PM

Whatever, R8. Just RETIRE.

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2025 11:39 PM

She could always tour to support it. But the album is a dud.

She should have done a dance album, something to cater to her huge gay fanbase. Or pop. You get Mariah and Ariana for a duet, and that shit was the best she could come up with?

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2025 11:42 PM

Nobody. Cares.

by Anonymousreply 11July 12, 2025 11:45 PM

Fuck my legacy!

by Anonymousreply 12July 12, 2025 11:48 PM

R10 What world are you living in? Her core gay fanbase is somewhere between 60 and death.

by Anonymousreply 13July 12, 2025 11:49 PM

R2 is saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

by Anonymousreply 14July 12, 2025 11:51 PM

She is in the sad predicament of outliving most of her fan base.

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2025 12:00 AM

The good news is sales of Brazilian Coffee ice cream in Malibu are the highest-charting in decades.

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2025 12:07 AM

EGOT? Does a special Tony Award count? Why did she get one?

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2025 12:14 AM

Oh yes, her gay fanbase. Look at all the love in these comments.

by Anonymousreply 19July 13, 2025 12:18 AM

[quote]See, Barbra? Time to STOP, and stop embarrassing yourself and your legacy.

True. So many other 83 year old recording artists are debuting in the Top 5 this year, and she's down at #31. What an embarrassment, huh ?

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2025 12:20 AM

"Enough is Enough" is still played in many gay bars and brunches around the world.

She has a gay fanbase from that alone.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2025 12:24 AM

R19 you're making the mistake of assuming that DL is the mainstream.

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2025 12:26 AM

Star Of The Decade is deserving of a theater honor? Bah. It's an EGOt

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2025 12:36 AM

Several people are EGOTs because of special awards. They are listed separately.

Whoopi fell into this category until 2001 when she won a competitive Tony for producing and her Emmy is for Daytime tv.

by Anonymousreply 25July 13, 2025 12:53 AM

We're at the same chart spot we got to in 1969 with the first crack at contemporary pop What About Today. Way not worth remembering as an album, but it was the first batch. Now either she gets another Stoney End with the next album or god forbid, a rap collab, in a last ditch hail mary, or she will fade away..

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2025 1:00 AM

I love you Barbra...

But enough with the "Duet" albums. They may be lush and gorgeous, but they're boring.

Barbra...make another album with some upbeat songs. Something along the lines of Stoney End, You're the Top and even a Broadway tune or two that is fun gets you moving. We don't want to emote any longer.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2025 1:02 AM

R20 a Paul McCartney album in 2024 debuted at #10. Same age as Barbra. More relevant.

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2025 1:04 AM

My Barbra obsessed friend texted me today that this album went platinum. On what planet?! I replied

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2025 1:06 AM

Her CD is still full price in the Underground Mall's Sam Goody's.

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2025 1:22 AM

[quote]a Paul McCartney album in 2024 debuted at #10. Same age as Barbra. More relevant.

R28 It looks like you're referring to 'One Hand Clapping' - a live concert album with his band Wings, which was recorded 50 years earlier in August, 1974, and never released. It debuted / peaked at #74 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums chart. By my calculations, that's 43 spots lower than Streisand debuted / peaked (so far). Not sure how you consider that 'more relevant'. Do explain for us, please...

For the record, McCartney hasn't released a new studio album of new material since 2020.

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2025 1:25 AM

I've never been a fan. My mother, who is postmenopausal now, has never been a fan. But my grandmother loved Babs to pieces.

I'm happy that the eldergays are happy, but she simply doesn't have the same appeal to the under-50 crowd now that she's so far beyond them. Same goes for Paul McCartney. Of course we all know who these icons are, and we respect their talent, but we're not rushing to pay money for their music.

I know who she is and what she's done...but I'm not ONE OF HER FAAAAAANNNNNS!

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2025 1:41 AM

I love her, but the album is a real dud.

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2025 1:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2025 1:50 AM

R26, What About Today was NOT a contemporary album. It had newer, non-Broadway songs, but the arrangements were big old Broadway/Vegas. Stony End changed that and I hated it.

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2025 11:22 AM

Gen X here. As far as gay fans go, Barbra was never as big with Gen X gays as she was with Boomer gays. And of course so many Boomer gays died from AIDS which really decimated that audience. Gen X gays were all about Madonna, Barbra was not the big icon she was with us as she was with Boomers. And Millennials were like "Barbra who?" She was pretty irrelevant to them.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2025 11:27 AM

Exactly, R36.

Her final run of pop hits was ‘79 to ‘81, from The Main Event thru the Guilty singles and then a #11 hit Coming In And Out Of Your Life. It all sounded much more ‘70s than ‘80s.

She’s free to put out another Duets album at age 83 but it’s absurd to think it would sell well.

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2025 11:40 AM

Madonna was THE gay icon to Gen X. By a mile, nobody else came close to the impact she had on our generation.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2025 11:43 AM

r27: Could not agree more, and I'm a huge fan. NO Barbra fan wanted another "Duets" album.

I only listened to the songs free on Barbras YouTube channel. Beautifully sing but deadly dull. I don't want to hear any of these other people.

by Anonymousreply 39July 13, 2025 12:04 PM

[quote] "Enough is Enough" is still played in many gay bars and brunches around the world.

by Anonymousreply 40July 13, 2025 12:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 41July 13, 2025 12:16 PM

[quote]She should have done a dance album, something to cater to her huge gay fanbase.

Her fanbase is in their 80s. She'd be responsible for thousands of broken hips if she released a dance album.

by Anonymousreply 42July 13, 2025 12:16 PM

Barbra does not have enough voice left to do an upbeat Stoney End like pop album. Don’t you guys get that?

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2025 12:27 PM

R31 McCartney also continues to sell out baseball stadiums in 2025 globally. You’d have to be an imbecile to claim that Streisand’s musical legacy is stronger and will be longer lasting than McCartney and the Beatles.

by Anonymousreply 44July 13, 2025 1:24 PM

R31, yes his last studio album was in 2020. It peaked at #2. His 2018 new studio album went to #1.

Barbra’s last two studio albums peaked at #31 and #12.

Hope that helps, since charts matter so much to you.

Can someone describe the underground mall for me? Does it actually have fully stocked name brand stores? How many are there? I dont get it. Who shops there?

by Anonymousreply 46July 13, 2025 1:36 PM

I've never been a huge fan, but I respect her. She has a lot more talent than many of the pop divas gays go for. these days.

by Anonymousreply 47July 13, 2025 2:13 PM

R46 It’s not that kind of mall. It’s a few cute little square spaces, sectioned off by glass windows and made to look like they have little storefronts. And inside each one is a bunch of crap she already owns. A little shop for dolls. A little shop for hats. A little shop for fat pants.

She goes through it to “shop” for stuff, but it’s just a weird hybrid of closet and flea market. I pity the five people she pays to dust it all.

R44 / R45 You've already embarrassed yourself by saying McCartney released an album last year which hit #10. Now you're trying to move the goal posts by throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks, and it's all nothing of which we're discussing here.

by Anonymousreply 50July 13, 2025 2:37 PM

Barbara does have limited range- to be expected at her age-- She has lost significant power- but not all power.

I always find Stevie Nicks interesting- she literally has a NO OCTAVE range- however, she still has a significant amount of power in her voice (if you see her live performances from last year on YouTube) For a former cokehead- its pretty amazing-

And Tori Amos is someone. who has lost all range and power- Its fucking sad.

It's interesting how singer's voices age as they do...

by Anonymousreply 51July 13, 2025 2:37 PM

Op you are such a hater. She is 80 something years old. Not of these young thots could hold a note next to her legacy and resume except Queen Bey, who Babs loves and adores.

by Anonymousreply 52July 13, 2025 3:14 PM

Barbra was already twenty years into a successful career in the 80s. Beyoncé and Taylor Swift would eclipse Madonna in the 2000s and 2010s to become the reigning queens of music.

Tastes change.

by Anonymousreply 57July 13, 2025 3:26 PM

Damn. It's only old show tunes queens, older than her 83 years, who care about her. Her last performance on Broadway was 60 years ago (1965). Generations of people know her name as someone who used to be famous, who has a shipping mall in her house, who starred in some wretched films (and one good one by Bogdanovich), as a woman with bad hair and long fingernails and diaphanous gowns. She was too good for everything yet most of the world knows her for Meet The Fockers, FFS.

Her fans are ancient if not dead! She’s 80! She’s been making music for older people since the 60s, of course they’re going to go extinct

by Anonymousreply 61July 13, 2025 4:04 PM

Barbra should have devoted the 80s and 90s to recording the American Songbook.

by Anonymousreply 62July 13, 2025 4:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 63July 13, 2025 4:24 PM

[quote] It's only old show tunes queens, older than her 83 years, who care about her. Her last performance on Broadway was 60 years ago (1965).

Darling, Miss Barbra RECORDED quality music until 1970, and again in 1985. Being on Broadway has nothing to do with that. These recordings can still be purchased. Besides me, my mother, grandmother, gay uncle and 20 something nieces all love that period of her career. They don't go near the teen queen stuff and ask me, yes, me why such a great vocalist ended up recording the dreck everyone else did better.

This is the last time I think she did something that truly could have hit the mainstream in a big way. There were a couple of remixes of the song that were really good as well. She could have had a video featuring a bunch of drag queens lipsynching to it. Instead, she went with ANOTHER ballad as lead single.

Barbra is one of the most boring singers and performers. This was true in her heyday and it’s true now.

She seems to think she’s this infinitely talented goddess who is also extremely beautiful.

Old Jews and old queens have enforced her delusion, but they’re dying off. The past year has been such an embarrassment for her.

by Anonymousreply 69July 13, 2025 6:06 PM

A message from Barbra on her official FB page:

"After all these years, I still love going into the studio, getting that perfect mix in my headphones... and then singing! It can be challenging, liberating and emotionally uplifting. I’m always touched that people are still listening to my work…and deeply grateful that fans around the world have embraced the new album The Secret of Life - Partners, Vol. 2. It was a joy singing with my wonderful partners on this album. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful summer."

Does Barbra believe in Zionism? That's a barrier to obtaining cultural relevance in 2025.

by Anonymousreply 73July 13, 2025 7:04 PM

Barbra is a Jew by identity, not religion. Her religion is California therapy, shrinkdom.

by Anonymousreply 74July 14, 2025 12:49 AM

Therapy, shrinkdom, AND canine cloning.

by Anonymousreply 75July 14, 2025 1:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 76July 14, 2025 1:48 AM

Because multiple social media promotional outlets, IMO: She even has a YouTube channel where her latest album’s cuts are posted in full and followers can listen to them there. Why even bother needing to purchase the thing, then??

by Anonymousreply 78July 14, 2025 4:20 AM

R78, she rarely sang standards, that’s not one of them. The Third Album and Simply Streisand, both excellent, were LPs of standards.

by Anonymousreply 79July 14, 2025 10:49 AM

I love her but she is the zenith of the deluded boomer artist who thinks that regardless of age they can continue on as if both they and the world has not changed. Most younger people today want steadily churned out disposable musical pablum, not schlocky overproduced ballads. Madonna is another, trying to be an elderly.sex kitten with a grill. Both of these women have incredible legacies, so it must be hard to acknowledge it’s over a la Gloria Swanson.

by Anonymousreply 80July 14, 2025 11:21 AM

Except she's not even close to a Boomer. She's older than Biden, for Christ's sake.

I have to admit, I love it when someone pokes the Barbra bears.

by Anonymousreply 81July 14, 2025 9:15 PM

She and Biden are the same age. She just seems like a boomer but yep she technically isn’t.

I’m a geriatric millennial (born 1985 but to see me you’d guess closer to 2005).

I grew up aware of Barbra, but to me she was just a self-important formerly famous person who showed up at award shows to present honorary Oscars etc. I knew she had a “big career”, and as a gayling eventually learned about Funny Girl and her appearance on the Judy Garland Show in the 60s.

It wasn’t until last year when I found her memoir on Spotify that I learned more. I had a couple cross-country drives coming up (flying phobia); I saw that the audiobook was 48 hours long and figured what the hell. When I tell you I was enthralled…

Following along the memoir, I started watching every live performance she talked about, listened to the albums, watched every movie (even Up the Sandbox — blech!). Her memoir made a lifelong fan out of me. I don’t much want to listen to her new music because I prefer to remember her voice as it was pre-2000, but she’s one of the few celebrities who I will actually mourn when they die.

I broke down last week and started a second listen of her book. Six hours in, 42 and change to go, and I couldn’t be more self-satisfied with my decision.

by Anonymousreply 83July 15, 2025 12:03 AM

Barbra is the Songbird of the Silent Generation.

by Anonymousreply 84July 15, 2025 12:08 AM

Yentl is a masterpiece. I will give her that. She did a brilliant job with that film. And the academy snubbing it was pure sexism.

I was born a whole 25 years than spry and fresh R83 (and shouldn't like to speculate on how youthful I look), but R83 provides an excellent description of my perception of Streisand.

She is 18 years older than me, but musical theatre and showtunes always seemed an old-fashioned thing to me, generationally more Boys in the Band -- not that distant in years but a world apart. She always seemed more than a generation older than me -- not 20 years but 30 or more. Streisand always seemed to me that her peak was long in the past. She had a strong voice and talent clearly, but to me she was very old-fashioned and didn't appeal.

by Anonymousreply 89July 15, 2025 7:32 AM
