What flavor ice cream is best for a banana splot?

by Anonymousreply 82July 14, 2025 10:39 PM

Split!!!!

by Anonymousreply 1July 12, 2025 10:43 PM

Splot works if you leave it too long.

I use vanilla.

by Anonymousreply 2July 12, 2025 10:46 PM

Orange sherbet

by Anonymousreply 3July 12, 2025 10:48 PM

Vanoola for a splot.

by Anonymousreply 4July 12, 2025 10:49 PM

Vanilla is the only answer.

by Anonymousreply 5July 12, 2025 10:51 PM

chocolate!

by Anonymousreply 6July 12, 2025 10:52 PM

These things exist other than in memory?

I remember them on menus from the 1960s but don't recall ever seeing one served or eaten.

I don't like raw banana so it was never tempting. Outside of some retro ice cream parlours in the sticks, I can't imagine finding them anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 7July 12, 2025 10:59 PM

Ancillary inquiry: how do you prepare the banana?

Do you slice it into little wheels, or do you leave it intact like an erect penis one uncovers via excavation?

by Anonymousreply 8July 12, 2025 11:00 PM

Truly gripping contribution, r7

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2025 11:01 PM

I’ve never tried it but I think peanut butter ice cream would be good.

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2025 11:01 PM

Why would I want to ruin perfectly good ice cream by exposing it to the ickiness of a banana?

by Anonymousreply 11July 12, 2025 11:08 PM

many ice creams are fine. variety! Nutty ones go well with the chocolate and banana. tart fruit ones give a good contrast to the other flavours, and sweet banana.

by Anonymousreply 12July 12, 2025 11:11 PM

Pistachio and Strawberry 😋

by Anonymousreply 13July 12, 2025 11:17 PM

Pumpkin ice cream ! With a pumpkin latte !

Isn't it pumpkin time yet ?

by Anonymousreply 14July 12, 2025 11:21 PM

I splot all over things but you DON'T want to eat the brown banana.

by Anonymousreply 15July 12, 2025 11:23 PM

I've seen them made before with Neapolitan ice cream: vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 16July 12, 2025 11:24 PM

R10 Split the banana lengthwise like a taco shell, spread 2 tablespoons of peanut butter into it and freeze them both for an hour or two. Once frozen, top with 2 scoops of peanut butter ice cream and one scoop of chocolate in the middle. Top that with drizzled chocolate sauce and crushed peanuts.

by Anonymousreply 17July 12, 2025 11:26 PM

FFS one scoop each of vanilla. chocolate and strawberry.

To my fellow fat whores, this what we consumed in 1973 and is classic. Check Wikipedia.

The sauces were meant to accompany and not fight the ice cream--chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, then a pineapple jelly on the vanilla scoop.

You don't get fancy with the ice cream flavors, otherwise it's a traffic accident of syrupy sludge. The banana is there for stability and has fewer calories and sugar than ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 18July 12, 2025 11:33 PM

R17 After you make that mess, what's the result supposed to be ?

by Anonymousreply 19July 12, 2025 11:33 PM

R19 Fat Whore Heaven

by Anonymousreply 20July 12, 2025 11:35 PM

[Quote] FFS one scoop each of vanilla. chocolate and strawberry.

For fucks sake? Why does the question enrage you, my love?

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2025 12:08 AM

3 scoops of vanilla, with chocolate and strawberry sauce on two, and a random sauce on the third. I like caramel. That way you get some sauce on the bananas.

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2025 12:15 AM

Do you all use whipped cream as well?

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2025 12:16 AM

My absolute favorite Banana Splits

by Anonymousreply 24July 13, 2025 12:18 AM

I use Mennen shaving cream.

by Anonymousreply 25July 13, 2025 12:18 AM

Bananas Foster is and always will be the superior ice cream/banana coupling.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2025 12:18 AM

Banana split for my baby,

A glass of plain water for me.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2025 12:19 AM

Chocolate chip and everything that's nice

Tutti-frutti once and spumoni twice

Dispenser man, if you please

Serve us up a bowl of calories

I'll have a banana split for my baby, and a glass of plain water for me

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2025 12:22 AM

[quote] 3 scoops of vanilla,

WRONG. Do you work for the DMV?

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2025 12:24 AM

We used to get them as a treat at the local dairy in the 60s. It was within walking distance (actually a beautiful walk through a cemetery) and we'd get one once or twice during the summer, in addition to just getting the occasional cone. The original dairy was sold in 1972. I never went after it was sold.

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2025 12:28 AM

[quote] For fucks sake? Why does the question enrage you, my love?

The question doesn't enrage me, some of the responses do.

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2025 12:28 AM

The original 1904 banana split at a soda fountain in Latrobe, Pennsylvania had vanilla chocolate strawberry but those who insist there is a classic composition are tight-assed ignoramuses. The variations in components arrived quickly with the sundaes growing popularity. And variations persisted for the following century. There is no classic banana spit.

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2025 1:05 AM

My earliest memories were of a Dairy Queen version, with three scoops of soft-serve, banana sliced on its length on each side, chocolate, strawberry, and pineapple sauces, a dollop of whipped cream on each scoop, and a a maraschino cherry on top of each of those.

Anyone remember SWENSON's, and their EARTHQUAKE?

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2025 1:43 AM

Speaking of pineapple, I worked at a Carvel in the 70s and the best sundae we made was the Hawaiian. Vanilla ice cream with pineapple sauce, coconut and a cherry on top. Mmmm,...so good.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2025 2:09 AM

I don’t like all this talk of pineapple sauce. Let’s stop that shit right now.

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2025 2:26 AM

[quote] I don’t like all this talk of pineapple sauce.

Lol. I like you.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2025 2:46 AM

[quote] What flavor ice cream is best for a banana splot?

In old country we like turnip flavor.

by Anonymousreply 39July 13, 2025 3:01 AM

Actually, I am, R33!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 40July 13, 2025 4:14 AM

I would go for a mix of chocolate and sweet cream with sea salt

by Anonymousreply 41July 13, 2025 4:21 AM

I made that ice cream out of the frozen bananas today and put in cocoa and peanuts. I bet you can make a strawberry flavor and then another one with vanilla powder and use it to fix a banana split with the same ingredients or maybe do something different with the whip and sauces.

by Anonymousreply 42July 13, 2025 4:50 AM

Friendly’s in the 1970’s had the best ice cream 🍨 sundaes.

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2025 5:42 AM

R42 I'm so glad you liked it! I do another version of it substituting the peanut butter for biscoff cookie butter and using dulce de leche ice cream and caramel sauce.

by Anonymousreply 44July 13, 2025 5:48 AM

Thank you R24! My mind went there immediately.

Glad there are other old farts on the thread.

FRIBBLE

by Anonymousreply 47July 13, 2025 6:12 AM

I partook of one last night.

I cut the ends off a small banana and then sliced it in half lengthwise, then removed the skin and put the two halves in a bowel.

Used only vanilla ice cream, sorry Neapolitan advocates. Atop the ice cream I added chocolate sauce and strawberry sauce, half and half, and then crowned it with some whipped cream. I realized we didn’t have any maraschinos and was sad.

Made one for my partner as well, but he initially balked. I then remembered I had bought some wet walnuts but forgot to add them because I don’t care for them. I added them and he cleaned that bowl.

A simple pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 48July 13, 2025 2:23 PM

In a bowl not bowel!!!

by Anonymousreply 49July 13, 2025 2:23 PM

Even as a kid I never cared for banana splits. Bananas and ice cream...and sauce...just never appealed.

by Anonymousreply 50July 13, 2025 2:30 PM

R32 loves "Phantom" because it's a classical opera.

As for, "There is no classic banana spit. FFS,"

Indeed and oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 51July 13, 2025 5:35 PM

R50, missed pun opportunity!

by Anonymousreply 52July 13, 2025 7:29 PM

My favorite was Cherry Garcia with banana, whipped cream, and cherries.

I had to share it with two female dogs who detested one another. And they knew math - we had to share equally and you could tell the Airedale thought she should get more because she weighed 110 pounds and you could tell the dachshund was all “Fuck you, Bitch. I can eat as much as you!”

by Anonymousreply 53July 13, 2025 7:38 PM

Flavor don't matter, just make sure it's served in a cavin dish.

by Anonymousreply 54July 13, 2025 9:43 PM

Why did the bababa split fall out of favor?

by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2025 12:31 AM

BANANA FFS

by Anonymousreply 56July 14, 2025 12:31 AM

Back in my Friendly’s Manager days a Banana Split, or as we called them Banana Royal was always made with 1 scoop of chocolate, 1 scoop of vanilla & 1 scoop of strawberry on top of 2 halves of a banana. In that order. 1 ladle of strawberries on chocolate , 1 ladle of hot fudge on vanilla & 1 ladle of pineapple on strawberry. Cover with whipped cream, sprinkles and nuts. 3 cherries.

I thought it was gross. And I can’t believe I remember this shit after almost 45 years.

by Anonymousreply 57July 14, 2025 12:38 AM

One scoop each of chocolate, vanilla strawberry

One banana

Strawberry topping, hot fudge, pineapple topping

Whipped cream, nuts (peanuts or walnuts), three cherries

It's a very heavy treat, so best for two people or

by Anonymousreply 58July 14, 2025 12:49 AM

Spumoni for bananas splits.

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2025 12:51 AM

I hate those jellied fruits in Spumoni

by Anonymousreply 60July 14, 2025 12:55 AM

[quote]These things exist other than in memory?

Yes, R7. I go on a beach vacation every year and the ice cream parlor on the boardwalk sells these alongside other varieties of sundaes. This is within 50 miles of NYC so hardly "the sticks." I've seen them in other ice cream parlors over the years, too.

I wasn't born in the 60s so it's funny that you think these disappeared somehow in that decade when I've been seeing them all over in my 52 years on earth.

by Anonymousreply 61July 14, 2025 12:55 AM

Isn't a traditional banana split done with the three classic neopolitan flavors, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla?

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2025 1:01 AM

[quote]For fucks sake? Why does the question enrage you, my love?

Not R18 but I feel his amazement at the dummies here. A banana split has a defined recipe of one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. It's a stupid question, like asking what type of alcohol you like in a gin and tonic.

R8's question is even dumber. "How is the banana prepared" in a banana split? Well, einstein, you might want to sit down for this but

by Anonymousreply 63July 14, 2025 1:02 AM

I've never enjoyed banana splits fully - half way in and you have this gross chocolate/strawberry/pineapple swirl mix in some melted ice cream with a banana in it.

I love sundaes but banana splits always seemed like a bad idea that caught on for some weird reason.

Berries would be so much better. And you can kill the pineapple and replace it with caramel sauce.

by Anonymousreply 64July 14, 2025 1:08 AM

R18 here. This is the CLASSIC banana split. The photo is from Fenton's Creamery in Oakland, serving fat whores from U.C. Berkeley for over a century.

R65 - where the banana at?

I'm not sure I like the choc, strawberry, vanilla ice cream combo - it doesn't improve it in my opinion. It's still an abomination of flavors and too much going on and fighting each other.

Now, banana ice cream is wonderful! Chunky Monkey all day.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2025 1:20 AM

Banana milkshake is my favourite

by Anonymousreply 67July 14, 2025 1:21 AM

R66 Shocking reveal, but the banana was barely there, at most a half, split as I recall. No one cared about the banana.

by Anonymousreply 68July 14, 2025 1:37 AM

R68 - right on - common sense prevailed! Does anyone ever care about the banana?

Half the time I got a banana with bruises - which is just adding insult to injury.

You gotta throw a banana in there - but a damaged one? How little do you love me, Mr. Ice Cream man? I'm just a kid - I don't need this added humiliation.

by Anonymousreply 69July 14, 2025 2:15 AM

[quote]Why did the bababa split fall out of favor?

It had to much to drink?

by Anonymousreply 70July 14, 2025 3:29 AM

DQ’s banana splits are the only way to go.

by Anonymousreply 71July 14, 2025 3:40 AM

What about peanut butter parfaits?

by Anonymousreply 72July 14, 2025 3:47 AM

Stick to the topic and start a thread R72.

by Anonymousreply 73July 14, 2025 4:39 AM

I do a banana split maybe one or two times per year. They aren't something I crave -until I do. And usually having one satisfies me for a year or so. Banana splits go way back to the turn of the century -at soda fountains. While people are free to make them as they wish, the traditional/original calls for chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream, various toppings, whipped cream, nuts, and cherries. I always have hot fudge on the vanilla and the chocolate, and strawberry topping on the strawberry ice cream. (Never cared much for marshmallow, pineapple, or caramel.) Yes, they are a gross indulgence and a guilty pleasure. So what! One or two a year won't turn you into a fat whore. Live a little! Use whatever ice cream flavors and toppings you like. There's nothing like a trip to Baskin Robbins on a hot summer day, and sitting down with a banana split and calling it lunch...
