Rick Springfield Catches Craig Melvin Yawning During “Today” Show Interview: 'Am I Boring You?'

Not even a pro like Craig Melvin is immune to an early morning yawn — even when he's interviewing one the biggest stars of the '80s.

On the Thursday, July 10 episode of the 3rd Hour of Today, Melvin, 46, got called out for yawning during an interview with ‘80s icon Rick Springfield.

As Springfield, 75, was talking about his hit 1980 track “Jessie’s Girl,” he paused briefly to ask the morning show co-host, “Am I boring you?”

Melvin, Al Roker and Jill Martin all had a good laugh at Springfield’s joking comment, and the morning show co-host quickly assured the musician, “Not at all, Rick. I apologize.”

Of course, Springfield took the moment in stride, saying, “It’s early. Don’t worry about it. I’ll yawn too.”

Melvin tried to excuse the yawn, insisting, “It was a cough!”

Springfield continued to crack jokes throughout the segment, prompting Roker, 70, to declare, “I like this guy!”

Later in the interview, Melvin asked Springfield about a brain injury he sustained during an onstage fall in 2000, and Springfield replied with a blank expression, looking around the room and saying, “I’m sorry, what?”

In March, the rock star revealed to PEOPLE that a Prenuvo whole-body MRI scan found that he had brain damage from his fall, which occurred during a show in Las Vegas.

"I fell 25 feet, hit my head and then wood came down and hit my head, and then my head hit the stage again," he told PEOPLE. "I thought I had just broken my wrist, but on the scan I found out I have some brain damage from the fall, so I'm working on trying to repair that."

Later during his Today segment, the co-hosts presented Springfield with a Today onesie for his future grandchild, prompting Springfield to dryly retort, “It’s a free plug!”

As for his future grandpa name, Springfield joked, “I’m thinking ‘Your Excellency,’ ‘Caesar,’ the ‘Right Honorable Mr. Springfield.’ Easy stuff for a kid to pronounce.”

The co-hosts were impressed by Springfield’s quick quips, with Melvin saying, “Rick Springfield, I had no idea you were so funny, by the way. Come back, come back anytime.”

Roker added of Springfield, “He has vaulted into the top five of favorite guests.”

Craig is cute. And I love his voice and dad bod.

by Anonymousreply 2July 12, 2025 6:43 PM

Rick probably needs a good sense of humor.

by Anonymousreply 3July 12, 2025 6:49 PM

Craig Melvin is the biggest jackass around.

by Anonymousreply 4July 12, 2025 7:35 PM

That’s it? I saw this on the daily fail. Didn’t watch the video but the commenters made it out like they all took turns flogging and insulting him.

Are other hosts are missing from the couch. Caught in traffic? Is it like The View where they all get to ask an Important Question?

I'm an eternal Rick Springfield fan. Not surprised he was so quick on his feet with the verbal sparring. Rick has always been more than a pretty face. I loved his autobiography. He's a big animal lover, the way he writes about his relationship with his dog made me cry. Trying to find time to catch him on his "I Want My 80s" tour this summer with Wang Chung. It's hard to believe Rick Springfield is 75 years old. Seventy five!! Time is wild.

Just say "yes" and cut to commercial.

Anyone else remember a weird Saturday Morning cartoon that where there was a schoolteacher with special powers who took kids and “Rick Springfield” on adventures? I looked it up and I guess it was called Mission: Magic. This was made years before he got famous from Jesse’s Girl and the soap, so I wonder why they chose for him to be playing himself.

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2025 11:50 PM

Why r4? Please don’t destroy another hero 🦸.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2025 12:08 AM

Craig Melvin looks like my HVAC guy that ripped me off . Rick Springfield looks good for 75 , had alot of work done but does not look like Barry Manilow or Burt Renyolds thank God !

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2025 12:47 AM

How did he become known only as the Jessie's Girl singer? He had four platinum albums and one gold in the 80's, along with17 top 40 hits.

He was also an actor. It was his acting on General Hospital that got him noticed in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2025 2:12 AM

He lived with Linda Blair back in the 70's as well. They were a big couple at the time.

R9 The reason Rick Springfield got to play himself in that cartoon was because he was a teen hearthrob in his native Australia in the 70s before he came to America and made it big here. He did music in Australia and had an Aussie accent. Rick was so motivated to make it big in the States that he adopted an American accent to audition for General Hospital, and just kept it. And he never looked back.

People magazine gossip about 75 year old pinup boys on the Today show?

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2025 2:22 AM

R14 that's insane.

I had no idea RS is Australian, and I never would have guessed.

No trace of an accent.

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2025 7:02 AM

I know, R16! Most people have no idea. Here's a clip of him discussing it.

...And here is Rick looking more like the 80s Rick we all know, but still speaking in his Aussie accent on American Bandstand, 1976. He still hadn't hit big, and Dick Clark is grilling him as to why he was doing cartoons and making music under the radar, and hadn't had a "hit" yet in the States even though he'd already been here for three years at that point.

Jessie's Girl was still a gleam in Rick's eye...

Great interview at R18.

Rick is so shy and soft spoken.

But he's very handsome.

I think he still looks great for his age.

[quote] This week back in 1981, I first appeared on General Hospital as Dr. Noah Drake. My ‘Working Class Dog’ 🐶 record was already finished but I needed to pay the light bill. 💡😉

So fresh faced and handsome.

Rick popped Linda’s cherry.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2025 10:06 PM

When I see a pic of Ric's like at R20, I fall in love with him all over again! What a handsome man, inside and out. I think that's part of it - he had the brains as well as the looks. And the voice, the body, the drive, the heart, the soul.

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2025 10:17 PM

Seriously, R19. How many 75 year olds walk around looking like that? He's incredible.

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2025 10:18 PM

Body? This was top heartthrob body and crotch.

Cassidy was King...in the 70s. He was a ghost of a memory by 1981.

by Anonymousreply 25July 13, 2025 10:34 PM

he looks like and old woman.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2025 10:50 PM

Am I the only one who bought “Speak to the Sky”, his US top ten hit from 1972 with their allowance money? God rock was pretty big then and so was Springfield, in the right circles. His Teen Beat pictorials were all over the club houses I would frequent as a seven year old. It grew sad that he began shacking up with Linda Blair a couple of years afterward. From The Exorcist, no less! Nevertheless, I welcomed him back into the top 40 fold once “Jessie’s Girl” struck eight or nine years later. I was hoping he’d begin dating Sheena Easton, but alas ‘twas not to be.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2025 11:00 PM

I remember his foray into cinema with ‘Hard to Hold’ complete with gratuitous naked butt shots, it was still mercilessly derided as “Hard to Watch” by wags in the entertainment press. In my opinion his best single was ‘Human Touch’, a hit from 1983 that still holds up!

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2025 11:07 PM

So average.

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2025 11:17 PM

He’s sensitive. It probably took very little for him to give his wife that ass beating he got arrested for years ago.

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2025 11:22 PM

He’s only 46? Oh my, I thought he was older. He’s not bad looking at all obviously 🔥 by dam he looks and just seem older.

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2025 11:44 PM

R3 If you read the article it reveals how he perfectly has one. You know for somebody his age. Read the article people, not just these BS headlines.

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2025 11:46 PM

He's 75, sweet summer child at R31

by Anonymousreply 33July 14, 2025 12:39 AM

R30, He wrote in his autobiography "Late, Late At Night" of cheating on Barbara relentlessly, from their wedding in 1984 all the way up until the early 2000s. He was pretty brutally honest about it. He has suffered with extreme depressive episodes all of his life, and sex-seeking was a way of modulating his brain chemistry He also has dealt with substance abuse issues, again to self-medicate the depression.

Google says the alleged spousal assault happened in 2000, so 25 years ago now.

Springfield got arrested for a DUI in 2011 as well. But you know, life is hard. He was a rock god at one time. The entitlement to use substances and seek sex is baked-in. But he did seek help and continues to do so. And as long as he sought help, and keeps trying to manage his situation, I can't judge the guy.

His wife has stayed with him through thick and thin, that's for damn sure.

At age 75 he's still experimenting with ways to keep depression at bay. My heart goes out to the guy.
