‘Superman’- oh, David Corenswet… A STAR IS BORN
Wow. Just wow. The film is amazing! And I’m one of the people who mocked the movie and felt it looked like absolute shit but I decided to go watch it today and was eating my words.
The movie is not only fun but charming and sensitive. I loved it. There is not a single moment that felt boring and the film goes by so fast that the time feels shorter than it actually was. It felt like 90 minutes max. PS I’m also someone who’s never been a fan of Superman. He’s just boring to me and too powerful. All that is changed in this film.
David Corenswet gives a movie star making performance. From start to end he never misses a single step. It’s an incredibly charming and heartwarming performance. He is tough and strong when necessary but also can be a bit naive to the human condition and is loving, kind and sensitive. I’ve never been so turned on while watching a Superman movie. Not even Cavill had me hot and bothered. I just thought he looked good. Corenswet is so charming and attractive in this.
Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois is the best Lois I’ve ever seen done. I loved her and the chemistry between her and David is off the charts. Her Lois puts Amy Adams to shame.
Despite how amazing they both are, the scene stealer here is Nicholas Hoult, whose Lex Luther feels closest to the comic book and he feels like he was born to play this character. That’s how effortlessly good he is.
Oh, and shoutout to James Gunn for including Krypto. I absolutely loved the dog and he had my theatre laughing. He was a pain in the ass but so much fun. I remember thinking it’s cheesy as hell to include him but Gunn knew what he was doing. The dog was awesome. Also, good call on cutting out the scene of the dog being beaten and tortured by Lex Luther.
There is a scene in the film where Lex and his crew break into Superman’s place while he isn’t there and destroy his robots and when Krypto attacks the woman uses her powers to take him down. Next time you see him you see they have him trapped at Luther Headquarters. Originally there is a scene of Lex beating and torturing Krypto but it didn’t go well with test audiences who saw it so it was removed. The film tested much better without that scene.

Saw it today and I thought the dog and Nicholas Hoult stole the show. David Corenswet is solid but he doesn't have an imposing presence. Also, that suit is really ugly. Granted some of this isn't Corenswet's fault because Gunn gives way too much screen time to the Justice Gang characters. Clark Kent is barely in this. Even Superman is off screen for a good portion once he's in the Pocket Universe.

This is a PR shill post written by a heterosexual. A DLer would've included lascivious comments such as wanting to see Superman and Lex fuck with Lex being the bottom. Snarky comments about Lois's hair, wardrobe and dykish demeanor. Something obnoxious about Mr. Terrific and how ugly and unfuckable Guy Gardner is.
The whole "tone" is off in OP's post. It's clearly not written by a gay guy.

OP I agree. Amy Adams as Lois was miscast from the start and her Lois was terrible. Rachel was the best Lois we’ve had since Margot Kidder. Corenswet is the best Superman we’ve had since Reeve (and shoutout to them giving his son a small cameo in this). Hoult is the best Lex I’ve seen. His Lex is true to the comics but not played up in a cartoonish way.

I saw it last night. Corenswet is gorgeous and does a solid job. Nobody is ever going to be better than. Christopher Reeves. Lois was great imo. I love Nicholaus Hoult, but he seemed too young for the part and has bizarrely flawless skin like some weird man baby. The story and plot are a complete mess. Appalling, really. There were seven people in the theater. This is not going to do well, imo. I could be wrong and have been before.

I’ve given up trying to interpret numbers when everything is considered a “bomb” these days but I think there’s a good chance it could make $130-150M this weekend. It doesn’t have to make $1B to be successful. It will arguably have little to no competition next week and it will still have the IMAX screens next week so that could definitely help it gain legs.

Sorry, Amy Adams was miscast as Lois Lane. This is by no means a controversial or uncommon opinion. She's a great actress and tried her best with the material she had to work with, but nothing in her performances even suggested "Lois Lane." She had none of Lois's edge. Lois is a bit of a bitch sometimes, with a coat of armor that hides her romantic and vulnerable sides. Amy just played her as a Mary Sue. I blame Zack Snyder 100% for it.

R7 that’s part of the point… Gunn didn’t want a super imposing Superman. Young people today find Superman boring. He was the top superhero once upon a time but by the 90s Batman became more popular, the rich guy who had to use his brain and gadgets to beat the bad guys who could easily kill him otherwise. Millennials never warmed up to Superman like they did many other superheroes. By the 2010s many felt Superman was a boring character, too perfect with too much power who no one could truly beat. And he’s always depicted as this massive and imposing figure. Gunn toned ALL OF THAT down so Superman no longer feels imposing or unbeatable but like “the strongest” guy of them all who isn’t unbeatable overall.
Hence why this film feels fun and fresh and not the same old we always get with Superman.

Saw it today and overall I thought it was good but not great. There are definitely some things that don't work - the CGI is really bad, some of the jokes fall flat, Lois is miscast, there's too much focus on the Justice Gang characters (Clark Kent barely has any screen time). For all the things that don't work, there are definitely some things that do. The story is engaging and moves at a fun, fast pace. Krypto is a real standout. I don't get the negative reviews that suggest Nicholas Hoult is the weak link. I thought he was the strongest actor here. David Corenswet is okay although he doesn't really have an imposing presence and the Superman suit is really ugly. While I don't think this will be one of the most iconic superhero films of all time, I do think it's worth seeing in the theater with an open mind.

Yeah I’m starting to think that poster A. Didn’t even watch the movie and B. Thinks the Cavill films were what Superman is supposed to be like.
Clark/Lois/Superman are all wrong in the Cavill films. They’re all different from the source material.
While we are at it, Dean Cain was Asian and had no business being Superman and Teri Hatcher was way too whiny as Lois. And yet their Superman and Lois were still closer to the comics than Adams and Cavill.
And let’s not even get started on what Snyder did to Lex Luther

R71 is what we call a gatekeeper.
Here’s what R71 believes Superman should be about
The entire movie is about Zionism. It believes Zionism or any kind of Jewish exceptionalism are evil. That is why Jor-El has been made evil; he represents the corrupted source, Judaism itself. Jor-El encourages Kal-El to infiltrate Earth so he can conquer it, take a harem, and spread his seed. This is an old Jewish racist stereotype out of Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Superman must battle a clone, born of the same corrupted genetic material that he carries. After defeating him, he rejects Jor-El (Judaism) and chooses to assimilate with the people of Metropolis (Western Christian-based society).

r104, production cost reportedly $225 M, marketing budget in the environ of $200. In the film world, if it reaches $500M, it's just barely breaking even and I'll guarantee you that the actors won't see a lot of backend points because it'll be considered financially not successful. I know the 2 principal actors, director, and EP (who is the EP of this film) of a very successful horror franchise (film budgets were between $13M- $65M per film for a total of 8 films) that has made $2.2 billion, and WB/NL are not giving them their backends claiming that they weren't successful. If it makes $700 million at the box-office, then it will still make $1 billion when it's all said and done. People underestimate how much digital sales, streaming deals, and merch sales add to a movie's bottom line. Superman will be a streaming hit for decades.

It is opening less than Man of Steel ($128.7 million, non-inflation adjusted.)
Inflation adjusted, that’s $177.5 million. It’s only doing 2/3 of that.

Some people feel he didn’t do enough with Lex and that his performance is understated in a very loud and large movie (similar criticism to Paul Mescal in Gladiator 2) but I thought he was good and him playing Lex as more serious worked. The villain being a bit more serious surrounded by people dropping one liners seems fine.

OP clearly you didn't see the same movie I did. This film (with the exception of the Pa and Ma Kent scenes) has no heart. David Corenswet may be easy on the eyes but he's a bit bland and doesn't have the confidence Christopher Reeves brought to the role. All Nicholas Hoult did was rattle off numbers from a skyscraper. As for Rachel Brosnahan, I'd liked her on Maisel but she was miscast here.

Man of Steel was also a piece of shit movie that set up one of the most disastrous movie franchises in history. This film is setting up something a lot different and much more in line with what fans want and what these characters were meant to be,

People had mixed reactions to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman was critically panned and hated by the public, people didn’t like Justice League, the did like Wonder Woman a lot but hated the sequel, they liked Aquaman but hated the sequel, and didn’t even bother watching Flash because goodwill for DC was done.
This film is trying to bring viewers back to DC films.

I randomly picked Marvel superhero movies from the last few years. Thor: Love And Thunder and Captain America: Brave New World. Neither was particularly well reviewed. Both their international grosses exceeded their domestic.
The public likes well done supe movies. DC was a disaster for years. Maybe Gunn can turn it around. Marvel churned out a lot of content, not all of it well-received. Feige is now much more involved in all the productions and they've cut back on the amount of content, focusing on less but better movies. Maybe it will also work.

Not a great film to me. I'm sure it'll be a big hit, which is great. I'll admit that the superhero is not my primary interest, but I know good storytelling when I see it. And this is not it. I was bored and it didn't keep my attention. It's jumbled mess. The storytelling is disjointed, and there is nothing compelling about it. There's no depth to his relationship with Lois Lane. There are too many other superhero characters which I didn't care about. And the dog, which could have been a great addition is underused.

Superman Returns was a good movie and Routh did a good job at reviving Reeve’s Superman (he was playing Reeve’s Superman and not a new version) but everyone else was miscast, especially Kate Bosworth. I saw it yesterday and loved it! I can't really compare it to the Reeve movie, though. How do you compare two movies made almost 50 years apart? But I can compare the experience I had seeing both. In 1978, 13-year old me had a great time (as most 13-year old boys would have). And I've always loved the John Williams score. So yesterday, sitting in the theater waiting for the movie to start, I felt like I was 13 again. When the lights went down and those first few notes of Williams' theme began playing, I was smiling ear-to-ear. I'm not sure my smile ever left my face during the whole movie. It was simply a fun, joyful experience, as a Superman movie should be.

As great as the score was, and as much as I don’t want to take away from John Williams’ classic score, or John Murphy’s beautiful respectful homage, one of the ones that I’ve thought has always been overlooked is Christopher Drake’s score for the animated version of Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman. It’s an homage to Williams in a way, just Superman at the end of his career instead of at the beginning.
It’s kind of a master class in how you can use the same basic piece of music to tell the same story with a change of tempo and instrumentation. There’s a moment just before 2:00 where these sweeping horns and almost celestial choral elements give way to fast strings and heavy percussion doing the same basic melody. But it tells you exactly what’s happening.

[quote]I thought Superman would open bigger than Jurassic Park: Rebirth
Not sure why you would set those unrealistically high expectations, since Superman is a franchise that has been struggling for decades through multiple reboots while the Jurassic franchise keeps pushing out piles of steaming dinosaur shit in the same time frame that fans inevitably go wild for at the box office every time.
The fact that this Superman film is both critically acclaimed and has great WOM is something not really seen since Christopher Reeve. Comparing it to MoS's opening is also silly: MoS was the first entry in DC's attempt to go head-to-head with Marvel's insanely popular universe. The excitement among fans was palpable and there was none of the CBM fatigue we see now, fatigue brought on by Snyders grimdark "vision."
People were excited for MoS because they thought it would be good. It wasn't, and very little that followed for the next decade was any better. People were less excited for Superman because of the poor showing of the previous DC films, yet they still turned out for it. WOM will be a factor in the second weekend even with F4 opening - another reboot of a long struggling suoerhero franchise. We'll see how they stack up.

[italic]Fantastic Four[/italic] doesn't open until the 25th, so [italic]Superman[/italic] will hang on to the premium formats (IMAX, Dolby) for another weekend and will only be facing [italic]Smurfs[/italic] and [italic]I Know What You Did Last Summer[/italic] as new releases.

Man of Steel beat it on its opening weekend when accounting for inflation. This was not the major hit they needed it to be. They need to go back to creative filmmaking with original ideas and stop depending on this banal superhero slop that is well past its prime.

You could put Billy Porter in that suit and the box office results would likely be the same.

The comparisons to MoS are laughable because a teeny tiny little thing called COVID happened since then and the entire film industry has never recovered from it and probably never will. Pretending that never happened isn't helping anyone's argument.
I've left my house for exactly 3 films since Covid. This was one of them. And I'm glad I did.
The truth is, adjusted for inflation, this opening is very close to the box office for a similar movie with the same characters over a decade ago. If you think getting 2013 blockbuster-numbers for a film in 2025 is somehow a "flop," you're not worth listening to.

I don't get how you can call this a win given its $225M budget (assuming that's 100% accurate) and the fact that it will hardly gross over $500M worldwide.

Well the internet is flooded with posts trying to tank the film so maybe they don't think "the film is out, we can all pack up now" is a viable marketing strategy.

Fucking Piers Morgan just had Dean Cain on to trash the movie. Why shouldn't Corenswet continue to promote his movie (and counter some of that nonsense)?

I wasn't sure what was going on. Why are some people are zeroing in on this standard superhero movie for a hate campaign? Now I get it. MAGA hates it. It's too woke or something, so they've targeted it. Now it must fail.

Damned if one of the best comments that I saw wasn’t from Whoopi on The View hosting Corenswet and Brosnahan.
Like, I was expecting her to have a weird take (I mean, it’s Whoopi and The View). But Christopher Reeve was her friend, and she just went on and on about how much she liked it, but in their first scene together starting to get annoyed…but then realized that she was getting upset because she’d forgotten what kindness looks like. Which lead her to interrogate why she wouldn’t expect him to be kind.
Corenswet’s bashful smile is everything.

The attempts to sink the film and declare it "a flop" are from 3 distinct groups:
1) the usual DL misanthropes who live to shit all over anything new, popular or uplifting.
2) "Snyder Bros" aka extremely online fans of the previous DC franchise driven by Zack Snyder, which was replaced by this universe helmed by James Gunn. Fans lamenting the departure of Henry Cavill also often fit this profile.
3) MAGAs being MAGAs about a film that their cult leaders have deemed "woke."
In other words, there's no use arguing with these people.

And this was even after Gunn gave them an olive branch by having them cameo as Lex’s army of monkeys.

It still has the IMAX screens for one more weekend and should score a strong holdover considering its only competition will be The Smurfs movie and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Why they didn't release I Know What You Did Last Summer on Halloween when it would've fared better is beyond me.
